She can play anything. I saw her in another video playing it with two hands like Stanley Jordan. She is a great player, and it is unfair to just compare her to Orianthi just because they both played with Michael Jackson. She compares to Vai, Satriani, Johnson, Malmsteen...all of em. She is great!!
the umpa, umpa backing track is a joke - the clean sounding guitar at the beginning is of the improvisation is nice - most of the rest is totally boring self congratulating and repetitive - sorry
@rolg3 So who do you consider not boring ? EC at the C/R festival was absolutely boring. He was at his best with Cream. I agree it becomes Rep--not her area of expertise. But Then again--what are you into --the dreadful shredder blues ?
@bluesatbirthi hate the tone of shredding, i like to name but a few: Super session w. al kooper mike bloomfield or early johnny winter , second winter his the lp before that, these performances have stood the test of time. good blues is about timbre and the space between the notes, for my ears the technical mish mash in this video is void of meaning or emotion, nothing whatsoever to be jealous of.
@rolg3 hey I had the pleasure of sittin' with Mike--Elvin & the rest of PBBand---I just don't get the shredder that has crept into the BLUES--although at times I hear that with JW--I'm all for articulation--nuance picking--dynamics--space--character--bottom line-feel it play it--EMOTION--the BBand was all that and more !
If Jennifer was a male, it wouldn't occur to anyone to compare her to Orianthi any more than it would occur to anyone to compare Jeff Beck to the kid down your street that's in a high school cover band. If you must make comparisons, or set up fantasy head cutting contests, she holds her own with the best rockers there are. That might be why Jeff Beck and Michael Jackson hired her for their bands. Orianthi? Please.
@GVinsonBiz Right on, man! Batten is a guitar player's player...She has her own voice, unique to her experience and talent. There are millions of players with their own way of navigating scales. Comparing is a fool's choice.
Yeah, she is pretty awesome. Sounds like she's spent some time listening to Steve Vai. I don't even have an amp anymore, but I still play. I think I'm good enough to actually shine and carry her guitars.
you could find my latest lick on my channel - TomdeSabla
@TomdeSabla When people say to check out their licks, I rarely do, but in your case, I'm glad I did-you have some serious chops and cool ideas-nice going-I actually watched all 9 minutes or so of "the finisher"! (They used to call Danny Gatton "the humbler"-I wonder if that influenced your naming of the lick?) BTW, if you're going to be Jennifer's guitar polisher, I guess I'll just be left with cleaning the grime from the soles of her shoes.
Damn !! that is some ridiculously sweet blues playing!! Holy crap, i had no idea this chick was this baddass. I thought she was just some tapping gimmick player. Wow, was I wrong about that!
@Funnypandalonies ha, Jen would beat the high lights out of that girls head! And then melt her face off, and thats not even considering the audience, im sure they'd Spontanesously Combust. I know i would...
@Funnypandalonies oh yeah it'd be interesting for sure, i'd pay to see it, u know to say i was there and how awesome it was, even though i know who'd win, who knows maybe Ori will eventually grow out her "pretty rocker girl phase" i hope, i bet she got talent stacked floor to ceiling locked away some were. Even though Jen's got talent from Middle earth to unlimited sky. and even some of that is untapped!
@Funnypandalonies I've seen quite a bit of orianthi's talent. She definately has a lot of potential. She's more blues/rock then she is pop. But I think she was placed in pop because of her wide range. I don't think that was by choice. Jen on the other hand, has more experience and with that knowledge that could blow ori's mind. She did perform with MJ for a lot of years, and through that learned a lot about sound and the stage and how to handle a crowd in a performance. it'd be interesting
And Eric didn't see fit to invite her to the Crossroad Festivals? WTF? She's played 2nd guitar with Jeff Beck for crying out loud. Maybe it would have sent poor little boy John Mayer crying to his mama and burn all his guitars?
I wonder why there are only a handful of female super blues & rock solo guitarists in the world, but many super singers and pianists, and even female bass players (Jeff Beck made again the best choice with having Tal Wilkenfield in his band a few years ago and now Rhonda Smith.). I saw Jeff and Rhonda play just 10 days ago in Stuttgart. Great!
@dennisl2008 He didn't invite Allan Holdsworth either-I guess Allan doesn't live up to Eric's high standards-he never plays any tired old blues licks, or sings sappy songs about feeling "wonderful tonight".
Saw a video of Jen playing a blues song, I think in Rotterdam, and I was seriously tempted to say there's some people in this world who ain't got the blues and she's one of 'em. BUT, but but but... then I heard this one, and DAMN girl, that's the blues right thar. Ok, ok, so I changed my mind. Nice job lady. :-)
I saw her at Music West in Vancouver when I volunteered there, in about 93 or 94, she was very down to earth and funny. Then there was a concert with Seymor Duncan, Jennifer Batten and Ellen Maclwaine.
what a freaking brilliant guitarist..fantastic wang bar technique and tons of feel and shreds like a demon..bet Jeffrey learnt a few tricks off her..in fact she is very original as some of her licks do not sound like anyone else..(maybe a bit of holdsworth in there).. behold the mighty Jennifer!!!
No wonder buckethead lists her as an influence. I actually thought she was a really feminine guy the first time I saw her because Ive never seen a girl near this good before.
I cant play a note on anything,, I am in absolute awe of people who can make music that lifts the human spirit to a place of peace and love. And it never has to stop, it can abide forever.
I saw her 2 nights ago in Kings Lynn and was really disappointed. She is undoubtably a great guitar player and everything that she played must have taken ages to arrange. Her guitar sounds were incredible and her technique great. It just sounded a bit like someone hitting notes at random and doing the old Steve vai talking guitar thing at times. There was a Michael Jackson tribute section that did carry me back to the days of Hank Marvin covering stuff. She is great but didnt impress on Tuesday.
bit sus but great, seems like shes using one of those floating trems that keep chords tuned while manipulating or a pitch shifting pedal. still wicked feel tho!!!!
well, yes and no. girls grow up being very skeptical about their abilities, whereas boys rule the world from day one ... they think! And to be honest, 98% of guitarist ought to shut up more and stop recycling their heroes licks ... and start LISTENING!
@heyawhaw I think there is a combination of gender bias, along with a lack of women pursuing their interest in the instrument. In the past, girls were not encouraged in that direction, so there aren't as many girls who pursued guitar seriously. Those that did are not taken seriously, and are ignored by their (often less skilled) male counterparts, even though they may have been deserving of recognition.
I do think that the doors have been opened a bit, and that will change in the future.
It´s not easy such a long solo not to get boring, but she did it really well - it´s only fun to listen to here...but i´m missing some cool bendings with nice finger vibrato. She uses the tremolo bar too often in my opinion.
It was shot with my 3meg camera, I had to use software to rotate video clockwise which added about 10 pounds to Jennifers profile (sorry about that JB)
It was a Digitech clinic and I wish I had brought more batteries for the camera which died right at the end of the clip.
Thanks for all the positive comments to such a great player and a very approachable and genuine person.
Fabulous! Unlike male shredders, her solo actually breathes. I mean, there's a nice blend of melodic stuff and chops...and the groove never suffers. One word: maturity.
