It's one of the flaws in the alternative ending. Meryl only dies if you get the bad ending. If you get the good ending she lives. But then in MGS4 she saids she knows that Campbell is really her father. But this is only reaveled if you get the bad ending. So it's filled with flaws.

Gotta say thats false. I have played mgs MANY times and have even played through the game with zero deaths and continues on hard, its not extreme, but that doesn't make it easy. I never got stealth after beating him the first try. However, If memory serves you can do both ending on the same save file and get both items for your 3rd playthrough.

This is how Otacon's ending is possible; once the credits finally end in Twin Snakes (the gamecube version of Metal Gear) it reveals a conversation of Ocelot speaking to Solidus. Towards the end of the conversation, Ocelot asks "and what should I do about the women?" (the women is most likely Meryl) Hence that Meryl is still alive, and Ocelot is trying to figure out what to do with her. I believe the body discovered by Snake is not Meryl's, but actually Decoy Octopus's.

I thought this ending was so moving. The whole game, Snake is so badass. Like no matter what, he's just confident that he can save everyone and do anything. He always said he's 'not a hero, never was', but deep down, I think he knew he was.

Then, for the first time in his life, he fails when it mattered to him the most. You see Snake at his all time low, which is something you never see in any of the other games. Really awesome scene, too bad they went with the other ending :\

No,just like in the alternate ending,the bombs never drop thanks to campell and thats how it goes in the real ending too.Otacon stays behind and is ready for death and to take responsibility,but then the f16 bombers return to base without dropping any bombs and snakes requests to campell that someone goes back to pick him up.
