I have a 1500 mg midget with the stick shift moving forward in 3rd gear on acceleration and backwards if deceleration. Any idea on why this would happen? I have the transmission removed from the car with the top cover removed. There is no movement in the 3rd gear to cause this issue at least. Any ideas?
DOES ANYONE KNOW????? i've always wonder what've happen if u start off with high gear during a complete stop....is it gonna damage the engine?? or is it not gonna move at all? and whats gonna happen if u use high gear for low speed climbing
@videoruslan high gear is the smallest one in the gear box and it couldn't resist the heavy weight of car to pull it forword from the static sitting to moving sitting so it will be very load on engine and could damadge this gear
1: Car will jump forward 1 - 2 feet and engine stalls, car stops, gearbox is put under high stress for a burst period.
2: By releasing the clutch slowly, it is possible to take of in 6th gear, but it burns the clutch, gearbox isn't harmed, clutch however wears out very fast .
Hill climb:
Engine loses RPM, car loses speed, at a certain point (+-10Mph in 6th) the engine will struggle, eventually stall, gravity will pull the car down the hill in reverse
seriously. this is the best explanation for "how gearboxes work" that i've ever seen on yt. even my dad that doesn't speak english understood this just by watching.
That´s very usefull, thank you. But I still have a little doubt left: if you press the clutch and then you change gears do they influence into the car in anyway? I mean if you are in reverse and you let your car roll forwards, is it any bad?? Of course when you press the clutch you disconnect the engine from the gearbox but you don´t disconnect the wheels so...
@WHITEVOLK8814 In answer to your first question, no. You've got the momentum of your whole car behind it (thousands of pounds), so if anything the car influences the gear change (as far as gear speed goes). And your second question, no again. Because if you're in reverse, with the clutch pressed in, and you let your car roll forward, it's just turning the opposite direction. But since the transmission isn't connected to anything, it doesn't matter.
@salemcripple So the only problem is connect the transmission to the engine (in R rolling forward) , because they turn in different directions. Now everything is clear. Thank you for your answer. Cheers!
You should be able to process more information when your stoned [around 3/4 times as much as when sober] which is why stoned people appear slow. They're simply smater. If weed makes you stupid, maybe you shouldnt smoke it, stick to alcohol. Anyway, you cant expect to learn outright from a video, go do some research if you want to learn about gear ratios/boxes etcetc I'm high as a kite and im also a mechanic, it's not hard to understand this.
John, how do you remove the nut at the front of the gearbox behind the clutch? its impossible to get a spanner in there and i dont think they make sockets that big?
Great video. The only thing is that in the beginning you say "when your foot is OFF the clutch, this is all that is turning". Right after that you say the opposite. I know what you mean but some may not...anyway minor detail but great vid and great service you are providing. Thanks.
Excellent video... I am an electrical with no mechanical know-how and I understood pretty much everything... I have never seen any explanation as detailed as this one.. THANKS A MILLION.
my gearbox is fine going up the gears but changeing down to 3rd and 2nd is possible but but it crunches. also when you are waiting at the lights and engage 1st you can feel the gears spinning a little and hear a clunk as it gos in. Is this a problem with the gearbox or is the clutch not complety releasing? i have changed the oil and it seem a little better. the car is a peugeot boxerer 2.5 tdi 1997. and it has a cable shift. thanks
I appreciate you putting this up. I need to investigate a problem with my motorbike gearbox and I had no idea how a box worked before looking at this clip. It's quite a bit clearer now!
The older, chrome bumper B's use 20 weight oil (preferably Castrol 20w50 GTX--it's closest to manufacturer specs) instead of tranny fluid. If you have an overdrive model, like I do, it's best to change it about every 20,000 miles or so, or your O.D. can engange/disengage at will. I use the same oil in my dashpots on the S.U. carbs--never had a problem. Great vid on the gearbox. It's nice to see how the thing works.
can u please use a better camera????

@7150285 ,
if you start with high gear, car will start moving very slow, or engine will shut up, and it could damage the gearbox.
