@TheValmirZz If I remember correctly, they were vessels the Japanese had surrendered to the Americans at the end of WWII, and they decided to use them just to see how effective nuclear weapons are at destroying naval vessels. Unfortunately they also did this test (and many others) too close to Bikini Atoll, rendering the island uninhabitable and displacing the native population.

@ElJulioso: well, no. This bomb didn't do much to the Bikini Atoll, as it was 5 miles out in the logoon. It was perhaps the 50 or so nukes they exploded elsewhere on Bikini that caused it to be fairly contaminated. The natives had moved several months before on their own accord, though it was a bit like the USG taking Manhattan from the indigs for some trinkets.

@puncheex Huh? First of all, I made mention of the "many other [bombs]" as well. However, the record makes it very clear that the bomb that was detonated underwater (this one) caused the most contamination of all of them, because the radioactive particles remained concentrated in that area, rather than mostly disperse into the stratosphere as happens with bombs detonated in the air. @ElJulioso: While Stone's movie is moving and perhaps as accurate as a video can be, it doesn't, can't tell the whole story. How many islanders were involved? What is their problem in the context of WWII, including the Japanese occupation of their island? Is the story of one sailor at Bikini, as horrendous as it is, representative? Trial by movie is never fair; the maker must achieve emotional impact, the antithesis of rational judgement.
