that dog is fine. the child obviously isn't heavy and the dog obviously just doesn't get what's going on. in a pack, dog's will climb, roll, jump, tumble, etc. over each other in play. it's obvious the dog thinks it's just time to play. that is how a dog sees it. if he were uncomfortable or in pain, he would most likely put his tail between his legs, lower his back legs, and move quickly forward to get away, probably yelping or whining. he'd look back at the kid a lot and pin his ears. hes fine.
@lovesbriardi Of course a dog has the muscle and bones to carry weight. That's why they've served as pack animals and work animals for eons. You may stand by what you said, but that doesn't change the fact that it's false.
i heard you can buy dog saddles now and you can ride large breeds like mastiffs, new foundlands, st bernards, rottweilers all those are big 200LB dogs
or maybe the dog was only wagging his tail because the owner (the person recordng ) was calling him if the man wasnt there that dog could of snapped at the little girl and she would of gotten hurt
omg people shutup if the dog didnt want her on its back it would have immediatley gone to the ground or walked away when she tried to get on! besides it was obviously wagging its tail so it wasnt in pain!
Actually I disagree , yes he is wagging his tail but no he isnt happy. Just because a dog wags his tail doesnt mean he is happy , his tail is low to the ground and wagging fast meaning he is fear full and or concerned
The problem of riding dogs is the child falling off. As in this video, the dog has no problem carrying her, but the girl just can't hang on. The dog leaped forward, not at the girls urging but happily running to someone else. The girl can't hang on and shouldn't be riding him or she will fall and get hurt.
Lets see a video of a kid riding a leaping-running dog, happily with a smiling child easily riding on his back. One that shows the dog letting the kid get on without any help.
ive always wanted to do that...but now im too big lol...the dog couldnt be hurt by this ppl...great danes r workin dogs i doubt that a possibly 70lbs kid could hurt it..plus it looked fun lol
i remember my neighbour had a huge german shepherd when i was like 5 and i used to try to get on it's back and get a ride. He always shook me off though. Hah
I'm going to leave this one comment up, since Anita responded to it in style above, but I've deleted a number of ridiculous absolutist comments from animal worshipers, and will continue to do so.
@ihaterobbie123 That's a straw man, no one is claiming that the dog is being used as a pack animal. And as for claiming that "dogs just don't understand why someone would climb on their back", have you surveyed the dogs of the world to glean this information?
@jorgecurioso I said the reason why they were never bred as beasts of burden is because their skeleton isn't designed to hold a lot of weight. With ox, who have fairly large abdomen to accommodate fat stores and their digestive tract, their skeleton has evolved to bear heavy weights between it's limbs. The skeleton of wolves never needed to adapt to such a demand and so domestic dogs, all of which are bred from wolves, share these characteristics and do not have a good weight-bearing ability.
@ihaterobbie123 It's a straw man. No one claims that dogs are beasts of burden. You might note, however, that dogs have been used as pack animals -- they were the primary pack animal in early American Indian migration -- and that dogs are used to pull vehicles and humans, much like oxen. See sledding in the Artic, for example. Your argument is not only not on point, it's disproven by reality. At least you've given up trying to claim to know what a dog would think...
@jorgecurioso I never said anyone claimed that, I STATED that dogs have never been bred as such and they have not. Pulling exerts different strains on the bones than lifting.
"At least you've given up trying to claim to know what a dog would think."
I would appreciate it if you didn't read too much into everything I say, you're finding faux meanings. You're pulling strawmen out of what I say and then you turn the fallacy around and accuse me.
I can't believe I had to dedicate a comment to this.
@ihaterobbie123 Here are your exact words, "dogs just don't understand why someone would climb on their back". You are claiming to know what dogs think. Pretty silly, innit?
And dogs are used as both pack animals and to pull humans on sleds. Your argument, I'm afraid, really has no merit at all. Did you have an actual point to make, or did you just want to spew vapid inanities on someone else's page?
@jorgecurioso "Here are your exact words, "dogs just don't understand why someone would climb on their back". You are claiming to know what dogs think. Pretty silly, innit?"
"You are claiming to know what dogs think."
You're not in the mood to for a lecture on the mechanisms of inference are you? I'll spare you the boredom and cut to the chase, your conclusion doesn't logically follow. I wasn't trolling, you just take exception to anything that disagrees with you.
@jorgecurioso I'm actually sick to my stomach of this conversation. You're finding points to disagree on and misinterpreting my position entirely. You continuously put words in my mouth and it's infuriating when I have to put my argument on hold to correct you.
Look, forget it, dogs are for children to ride, whatever.
See? See how annoying that is? When I say something like "A dog just won't understand why someone would climb on their back" I mean "A dog won't understand something alien to it".
@ihaterobbie123 LOL, you come on my page pontificating about "beasts of burding" and claiming to know what dogs think, I quote you verbatim, and you whine about misinterpretation? Perhaps you should consider actually having a point before trolling on other peoples' pages?
people like u are usually the ones who spend their days running after their dogs in the park afraid to pull the least a bit, because it could hurt them ... :) come on, it is a dog. It whines when it is sad or hurting, it wiggles its tail when it is happy. you keep a dog so that you can have fun together. This was fun :) Just hope the girl didn't bump too hard on the ground :)
@lovesbriardi hes wagging his tail isnt he and im sure if he didnt like it he would turn round and bite or run off?! go complain about some real abuse!
that was sooo cute that must have been fun when i was little i used to have a huge golden rietrever and i used to ride him around the house so it brought back memories:) great video!!!!!

And people are freaking out.

You just need to remember that Great Danes have hip, joint and bone issues so be very careful.

Why I say that: in a Popular Science or Mechanic issue saw a K9 ad that said "this dog can immobilize an intruder in 2.3 seconds...
he's also Jacks pony" and it showed a little boy lying on the dog

@jorgecurioso Well it is bad for their back which is why dogs were never bred as heavy pack animals, though I suppose a few rides won't hurt.
They're not like horses, dogs just don't understand why someone would climb on their back.
