There are many great female vocalists out there but if you're looking to hear a true artist -- look to June Tabor. Spare instrumentation, no laser beams, no special effects and I find myself riveted to the voice and musicianship. She has been quoted as saying she never had voice lessons -- if this is true, she is an even more gifted artist. Her imperfections are shallow compared to many other singers. Takes guts to sing this naked.
This is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard. An' yes I know that Lal Waterson wrote it, I happen to much prefer this version. June Tabor has a most hauntin' voice. This rarely leaves me without a tear in my eye. Martin Simpson an' Tim Harries work on here is excellent.
This is a brilliant lesson in understatement. I wish that more performers understood that sometimes less is more. One of most haunting songs I have ever heard.
my father showed me this song yesterday, as i was visiting him an bracknell. (my father has shown me all my music) and i knew i loved June Tabors' singing, but when i heard this....wow. I love symbolism in this song. :) special..i'd have loved to heard Sandy Denny cover this....sadly, of course, impossible.
@rmwhee im from Reading! Live in the USA now, how is dear old Bracknell?, ( I used to go to the pubs there)..if you like June thougn, try madddy prior, and sandy denny..warms regards Steve St Louis Missouri USA!)
Geez, I've LOVED this song for more years than I'd care to stop & count. How wonderful to finally see it performed live, with all due somberness & musical perfection. Thanks so much for posting this.
Fantastic song and a great performance

love June and Martin to bits. One day I'll post our version learned before we ever heard this version - even more spooky!

Hmmm. Would be better without the accompaniment? Couldn't follow the words.

I disagree also. I'm moved by this rendition every single time I hear it. Long live June!

Really flat interpretationwise. Even someone as great as June is has their off moments. Oh well.
