Listened to a few Stern interviews, and I can understand his angle. He pushes so he can get into the really dirty underbelly of peoples lives, but then keeps pushing on the same topic until its a case of diminishing returns.
What makes this interview so bland is that Doug Stanhopes whole comedy is about exposing the dirty underbelly of his life and also society, so theres no way Stern came make him feel uncomfortable. Its already all out on his CD's/DVD's.

I have a serious drug problem and the things I've done which were dangerous, reckless and humiliating at the time but after a while you can't do anything but laugh about it. You learn to love the thing that makes you different and disturbed. I have no problems talking about it nowadays and if someone like Stern would ask me on the air I would try to dig out my best stories.
