Very good point on removing the roots of your weeds with a hand tool -- no chemicals needed! Using mulch is a no-brainer to prevent most weeds in the first place. A number of more refined and ergonomic tools are available with long handles that can also save your back. These tools include weed twisters, weed poppers, weed pullers... etc. Just search YouTube for these tools and you will see many great options to wipe out weeds and save your back as well.
I'm a gardening newb and your advice sucked. If you think someone wants to go out with a dollar store hand tool and dig up their flower bed week after week, then change your handle to amateur village. Build up you flower bed with good gardening soil, plant hardy perenials and add a layer of barkmulch around them. Buy a good edger and shape a design. This will keep weeding to minimal labour and look good.
