I remember this well from Summer 1985 . It was a hiatus period from school, between my O and A levels, and I recall this track being regularly played throughout this time. I loved it from the very first listening, and I recall it getting regular playings on both Radio One and the local commercial radio station. Such an infectious track with a strong beat should have been top 20 at least. Yet it never did get into the top 40. it's a tragedy it never finally got the recognition it deserved!
I love the 80's. Can't sing or play an instrument? Splice some samples together with a whole lot of computerized beeping, and BEHOLD! A song. BEEP BEEP BEEP! Uncle Eric is helping police with their inquiries. Genius. I like it.
I remember listening to this on Peter Powells show on Radio 1 then in 1986 I recorded with the Greengate DS3 computer it could have bloody well had an appegiator tor unit or a appegiator program on it though, still it was OK . Also remember going to a Goth club in Milton Keynes where Evil Eddie Richards used to DJ at The Joint around 1983/84
Cool! I still have my DS3 stashed in my parents loft... I got so much mileage out of that system! I introduced my mate Evil Eddie Richards to the Greengate phenomena & I do believe he had some involvement in some of the Mainframe stuff at some point???? Nice one!
The first time I heard of Mainframe, they presented the new Greengate Sampler in a german radio show with a demo track called " The Noise Of Art". (1984 i think) This is very close to this track. I´m spending ages searching those tracks at YT.
Ohh what a happy luck..I've searched so many years to find it at my old vinyl-pusher and so you've got it fantastic tune and great dance-tune back in 1985 i remember it very clearly it was huge on the floors here in Dk back then, but as i britain not in the sales chart. But it has indeed got some FGTH/Art Of Noise sound in it!! THX for listening!
lol ! "You implying that the only fans of mainframe are related to band members?" Ha ha. No I'm obviously not saying that, but I have noticed more than once on youtube that people who have corrected errors in info have done so because they have a personal connection to the artists.
Well, I've met John, and I've met Clive, but I met them because I liked the music, rather than liking the music because I met them.
I never met Murray. I understand from John that Murray has the master tapes, which is why none of the Mainframe or Noise of Art stuff is available on CD. In fact, I sent John a CD I ripped from a cassette copy of the masters I had, so he'd at least have some sort of copy...
I'd still buy a CD if someone could locate Murray and extract the tapes from his clutches.
I tried searching for this about 6 months ago on u tube to no avail....you posted 1 day before my 44th birthday. Thanks for taking me back 20 years when I felt like i could dance, had cool hair, not so cool clothes (it was the 80's you know)and the only worries you had were how you were going to pay for your next drink.....
The Fairlight of the time cost around £26K, not $1M. The DS:3, including buying an Apple IIe system to run it on, would have been under £2K, so yes, a lot cheaper.
They also used other instruments, such as guitars, Yamaha DX7, Moog Liberation, and Roland Juno 60.
BTW, unlike bobtheinsane, I'll happily report that I am connected with them. The "gate" part of the company name came from my last name.
So were the main bass grooves, rhythm and lead parts the DS:3? Maybe some of the others instruments for the "one day for one day you lied" break?! Just a guess...
Whatever - it's a cracking track which still sounds good today. Could never understand why it didn't make it big - everyone I ever played it to loved it!!
ps. yeah I exaggerated the $1m but then it seemed like it at the time when all I owned was a sub-£100 Casiotone!
I can check with the real John Molloy about that, but he already told me that all of the drum parts were DS:3.
The single did get to 93 in the charts, and that was even with severe loading that it had against it, due to many of the sales being within the general area of England that they performed in. Without the loading the single may have reached 75 and gone on to be a hit. But alas that didn't happen.
I'm not complaining though, I've done some interesting other things in the last 23 years.
S'OK, I didn't expect you to remember :-) Mathew, one of Ashley's friends. As I recall we met briefly around the time he was working on something for the DS:4 using W65C816 assembler.
My speakers were turned up at the beginning :(

I wonder if Uncle Eric was ever charged or not? Either way, I sure hope that cough of his cleared up!
By the way, does anyone know what the people who created this superb track went on to do, and what they are up to nowadays?

This is one of my favourite all time songs. Should've been a huge hit. I could listen to it time and time again.

Is this the same Mainframe that release the synth pop song "Talk To Me" which was given as a flexi-disc with the Lode Runner comic in the 80's?
weegerri1sm 2 years ago
Additional, if it helps, the Mainframe that released "Talk To Me" also released an album called "Tennants Of The Lattice Work". Is this them?
weegerri1sm 2 years ago
Yes, I believe that was the name of their album,

Thanks. ^^
I actually did a bit of research and it is, indeed, definately them.
You can call me a fan. :)
Very "Art Of Noise"-esque sound here... more of a Kraftwerk/Depeche Mode sound with "Talk To Me". I've been considering posting up "Talk To Me" here..

Well, if you just checked out the wiki, you'd see that it said otherwise. (youtube won't let me post the link)

The main difference was that the whole track was done on an Apple Greengate DS3 sampler and not a million dollar Fairlight...

Wow, it's amazing how much they sounded like Art of Noise.
I have Into Trouble with The Noise of Art and some of the tracks are actually pretty good! The same goes for this song. Thanks for uploading! :-D
SynaMax 3 years ago
@SynaMax art of noise were never this funky, they were much more methodic in their approach to sampling....just my opinion....
mutantmoments 1 year ago
@mutantmoments Granted Art of Noise were much more industrial sounding, the vocal stabs in the riff are very "Paranoimia"-like.
