shito- ryu, this is point tournament = control. don't be fooled by the quick tsukis. I have practiced karate for 12 years since i was 4. and i learned to control more than anything. but when i had to let it go, id bring bigger guys than me down with a tsuki to solarplexus. one punch. watching this brings memories bak.
Karate point techniques can fool you into thinking they are not effective....however, I have seen many accidental knockouts with such punches....( single punches )
@Ronin6575 I hear you Ronin... I've seen some really bad injuries caused by some clown totally disrespecting the rules and trying to take someone's head off. These shots are brutal. One mistake and you can kill or permanently injury someone.
I really don't think any of these punches would have ended the fight. Maybe if landed to the jaw. I can assure you, even had the technique struck any of these karate guys full force, they would have walked out with a small bruise. It would definitely not put a dent into any Muay Thai fighter, Kyokushinkai karate guy, boxer, wrestler, judoka, shidokan competitor, or even a street tough guy. This is a glorified game of tag and can't be called combat.
Dude Lyoto Machida training was first from Karate. He uses Karate in his fights. He gets hit once every 2 and a half rounds. MMA still has not completely evolved and like martial arts, it is something that evolves through applications of theories. Chuck Liddell and GPS always trained in Karate. Lyoto hits you and you can't hit him back. MMA is still evolving, Lyoto Karate is part of a evolution in MMA fighting. The sparring is also good for timing, accuracy and speed.
erm.. the punch does land on the jaw? don't confuse control for ineffectiveness; i've seen plenty of accidental knockouts happen this way (with uncontrolled fighters). also, who is saying this is combat? there's a referee! of course it's not combat. if it were, i think we'd see rather more use of weapons and breaking of bones, etc. it's a sport that is built out of the martial art; i don't think anyone has ever said otherwise - the whole point is to avoid combat (ie death/injuries).
Uhm.... wanna come to my dojo? The rules dictate you aren't supposed to follow through on your punch. Reason: you're going into the fight bare knuckled. One mistake and someone gets killed. These shots, minus the control, will take your head off. Don't believe me, go to a Kyokushin or Shotokan dojo (a REAL dojo) and try them out. The reverse punch is their trademark - it's wicked fast, hard to read, and has their full body weight behind it. Miss the block, you'll be visiting a dentist.
And how do you know that if they never actually hit anyone with supposed force. Im sure they dont spar by doing these blows either, they still just tap each other. This same as TaeKwon Do, its fast but not powerfull enough. Give me all thumbs down you want, but this is common sense.
it is a "waza- ari" which means technique exists. But since Shiro wasn't planted in the ground, and while Aka had been also attempted zuki, it can never be considered an ippon.
Excellent hand-pulling technique. That hand-pull is very useful in tournaments, it makes very difficult to counter or defend when you can't move your arm. It is the perfect application of the back-hand in a typical tsuki.
Well, he grabbed his opponent's left arm and hit him with a jodan gyaku tsuki, just a little bit before his opponent landed a chudan gyaku tsuki on him...That's why he got an ippon!
Depends. Some rule books say a grab then quick release is allowed. Watch some of Yahara's old kumite videos. He's always grabbing people and holding them there while he punches them.
Even with a guard up like boxing, the punch will probably have hit the throat. Gloves give a protection in boxing, but we don't have gloves in karate.
Watching this again, what's remarkable about the point, was not the ashi feint, but the way that the striking arm is absolutely relaxed allowing for instant movement, and that there was absolutely no telepgraphing of the punch, there was not even the slightest pull pack - it just shot straight out. Great stuff.
Who won and why? LOL
Seriously!

In Kyokushin , Ippon equals knock out your opponent .
Thats all i know :)
It does however show the great control the guy has on his techniques! This is respectable !

So you could take a full punch to the throat and walk away? hmmm, think not.

@kdonv I know mate. Miss the punch or blink at the wrong time and you will be wearing false teeth or receiving a new jaw.

@kdonv punches that are meant to penatrate body armor would hurt bare knuckled...

Ippon. If it technique wasnt so controlled it would have ended the fight. Thus ippon. Full force and the other guy would not have got up again.

Is that not a wazari rather than an ippon?
statementz 3 years ago
No.
That is an ippon if i ever saw one.
Ippon = the definative technique = i.e. it's all over for the opponent.

Aka seems pretty defenceless to me, ergo: Ippon !

Ah but if he had his guard up he'd have been punched in the stomach ;)
Toxeh 4 years ago 10
Even with a guard up like boxing, the punch will probably have hit the throat. Gloves give a protection in boxing, but we don't have gloves in karate.
charger089 3 years ago
And had he stopped the punch with boxing guard, without gloves, then he would've hurt his arms or hands.
Blocking punches that doesn't have any gloves is just... painful.
That's why we don't block punches straight on in karate... we can't stand the pain as good as others ;)
Gismokvack 3 years ago
I prefer to have painful arm than painful face or throat. Personnal choice.
charger089 3 years ago 4
I prefer no pain at all, hence the prefered karate blocks, but I guess no pain would be going too far from your point of view:P
