  • This spectacular performance from two of the very best ever easily overrides all "technical difficulties".

Thanks for the great video post, Cicciosami.

  • @blues917 You are wellcome, i'm happy you enjoyed this one!

  • How did anyone ever get them to do this!

  • @rickw1100 Not easy to do...

  • @Cicciosami LOL!! Great post ! I keep waiting for someone to throw the first punch.

  • A really interesting performance--I can't think of another case of a duet done by two huge artists with competing solo versions of the same song. Burt Bacharach said in an interview that he thought Aretha's version was the best, but I disagree with him--I think the song is more of a pop song than RandB/gospel, so I like Dionne's style better. I think the chemistry is fair at best (as others on the stream have noted), so I wonder if the rivalry was being played out in the performance.

  • @joncheskin Great observations, both are great versions- but the song is Dionnes.

  • Oh yeah, when you had to be very good to great to be a star, not just competent.

  • @17865329 They are both very, very good!

  • Hermoso

  • There is something magical about these old videos and singers. Love their spirit.

  • Dionne sung the hook on her version, versus Aretha's call and response.

  • aretha is too nice to do anything but dionne keeps singing over her

  • dionne is just being a bitch here and she is musical dwarf

  • @cerberusdest Dionne is a musical great too and I love them both.

  • Diva Duet *-*

  • @FelipeMorati that's right!

  • @Cicciosami I'd wanna see this one in HD, but I think it's hard :(

  • e ora chi scelgo?...non scelgo e prendo tutte e due!!!! FAVOLOSE !!!!

  • ahahaha. What does VCR mean. Im 23 and I remember those. The fact that he doesn't, really makes me feel old

  • @nasurdan I'm 34 years old, i'm older than you...I didn't knew what vcr means couse i speak english just so and so...I can understand soul music anyway!

  • It's a beautiful performance, but they have zero chemistry together. They appear to just be doing the job, albeit masterfully, just phoning it in. I wonder if they're getting along. That hug at the end, Aretha's is like "yeah whatever" No real smiles. It's funny, but still very good.

  • HAHAAAA Is Dionne rocking a jellyroll hairstyle?!!! lol!

  • old school VCR!!!!!!

  • @chengy85 old scholl,timeless school...what vcr means?

  • @Cicciosami VCR is the Videocassette recorder

  • @chengy85 oh thanks, i just learnd something new...i have to improve my bad english

  • Rispondi a questo video... Thanks i just learned something new!

  • Outstanding!

  • @slimsxyblkwoman So you look... I would like to know more about your taste in music!

  • Wow, what a rare performance! Thank you to who posted this! Oh! Glory Be!

  • It's so cool to see these two sing this song together. It's big of Dionne to sing with Aretha, since Dionne recorded it first. And nice how Dionne's singing it in Aretha's higher key. That's sportsmanship you won't see anymore.

  • They both look so young and beutiful here.

  • Two accomplished pros who know how to make a song sound good and make each other shine. Its called professionalism...these women are legends in their own right and mature enough to make good music together.

  • I have always loved both Dionne's and Aretha's versions of this great Bacharach/David tune. I had no idea the two singers ever performed it together publicly, though. (Geez, they both look gorgeaous, too!) This is priceless. Thanks for putting it up here. I only wish they would have continued with more verses. (Too bad the video quality is so poor. )

  • Great to see them share a stage, but the performance is bizzare. It seems that Dionne is singing her 1967 arrangement of the song, Aretha is singing her 1968 arrangement, and the backing music is a confused hybrid of the two. The two biggest divas of their generation---can't imagine the 60's musical panorama without them.

  • This was a FANTASTIC GEM!!! I usually prefer Dionne's style to Aretha's and it was nice to see they really complemented one another here and didn't try to out-sing the other. BEAUTIFUL!!!!

  • Dione's voice sounds surprisingly big next to Aretha. Yep Aretha can belt higher but Dione is no joke

  • dionne looks STUNNING!

  • I love both of these women. I simply love both of them.

  • soul, power and respect...

  • They sound great, but they don't seem as if they enjoy singing together. They make no or very little eye contact, to be sitting right next to each other.

  • why can't they produce singers as good as these nowadays?

  • two different singers....Aretha is stronger, Dionne is just great....together its like: Oscar and Jerry West in the same backcourt...Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson pitching a doubleheader....and a SL 500 with the top down...can't be beat....

  • Aretha looks fantastic here, and Dionne is stunningly sexy. In Dionne's original version, she sings the lead line through the verses and choruses. Aretha's version has the backup singers doing most of the chorus freeing her up to ad lib over it. While the orchestration of this live version leans heavily toward Aretha's, both ladies manage to weave in their vocal approaches beautifully. This is a delicious and fascinating clip of two great artists sharing the spotlight. Excellent stuff.

  • @keithswordsman are you saying that the orchestration of this version leans toard Aretha's?

  • You jes KNOW what Aretha is thinkin' during this duet. "Yeah Dione ur good, but...By the time Aretha stetches out that first "foreeeeever" its all over.

  • Two stars from 4ever!!!!!!!

  • @sungnee You are right, that's a classic in the world of music.

  • very beautiful....thanks for posting this...these women are liberating in so many ways

  • i don't hear it. People love Dionne...I don't get

  • a monster(of beauty)of song...two m onsters of singers...now i want hear nothing more...this is THE MUSIC ... for ever !!!!

  • awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww rare video the both of them are wonderful do anyone know which one of them sing the song first??

  • @LACIELLIA Dionne.. it was written for her, and Aretha covered it the following year (1968)

  • @numonemofan they all wonderfull

  • What a voice! Both, really divas <3

  • Dionne and Aretha? is this even legal? Too much...too powerful....just too damn good!

  • wow what a classic!! two divas doing what the know best... i love this song and dionne and aretha as well!!

  • Damn Dionne's mouth is so damn sexxxxxxxxy!!!!!!!

  • talk about forces of nature...

these two women are testament to the power of great music.

    i love!

    i love!

    i love!

  • It's so nice to see two "Divas" act so respectful to one another on stage. They truly complement eachother. This is true professionalism. Just can't imagine this display of artistry in this day and age.

  • goosebumps LOVE IT!

  • never seen this before; it must be a real rare vt.

    Cheers.

    from,

    del-boy.

  • Love it, recently a Brazillian talk show host asked Dionne what young soul singers did she listen too...Dionne deadpans states I listen to Aretha Franklin she is "the soul singer".

  • Wow, never knew these two ever did this together. That's a lot of ego on one stage. Two brilliant vocalists giving us a very special moment.

  • Clive Davis thought this would be great, however, I don't think the ladies are too comfortable with each other, both had great success with their own versions of this song. They respected each other, but no warmth, they didn't even look at each other or interact with one another, it was like, Girl let's just do this song, and get it over with. Both were signed to Arista during this showing. Thank God, they went ahead, now it's a classic.

  • @higgybaby1 What are you talking about Aretha and Dionne are very great friends and have been from back in the day. They have never ever said a bad thing about one another.

  • Omg. THAT's when Aretha was sheer brilliance. 80's, 90's I LOVE this performance.

  • This is kinda embarrassing, but which one is Aretha, and which one is Dionne...?

    /Blush.

  • @Hamppsta Aretha is the one with the red dress.

  • @Hamppsta; left is Dionne and right is Aretha.

  • they make a powerfull voice like dionne .... they are not competing each other!!

    the true legend's

  • @megamapagmahal i agree!

  • @megamapagmahal i agree!

  • when it comes to two true divas,u can't come close to these ladies, the queen and ms.dionne!!!! cool clip!!

  • great!!! thank you posting.

  • You are wellcome! Keep soul alive.

  • Two extraordinary talents & a true rare performance - no doubt.

But I never saw a duet in which the singers don't look in each other eyes. So weird!

  • great song. i love dionne warwick's voice - angelic. seeing this video is like seeing Whitney and Mariah - historical......

  • No chemistry and they sound like their singing two different versions. great singers and a great song but not together.

  • I think that was the point to sing to different versions of the same song.

  • I remember the first time I heard this song! Dionne Warwick sung it during the 1967 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and I thought "wow" what a moving song. Perhaps its melancholy chord was a harbinger of what a terrible year 1968 was going to be with TET, Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy being assassinated. Terrible!

  • i agree!

  • Dionne and Aretha are great singers and this song proves it - Their duet is outstanding - heard it years ago...and it is still one of the best....Let's get them together again .. would love to see that performance.

  • I will not go back and forth with this discussion you can email me on this site and we can discuss Aretha to the cows come home. But I have spent a lifetime on everything that is Aretha, records, books, magazine articles, interviews, etc...bring it. Aretha is a musical genius but there is much in her life/behavior that borders on strange, overthe top, egotistical. But there is also smart, wise, funny, creative, talent out of this world but you can run from the one part to maket the others.

  • Well sweetheart you better have read every book and every magazine article there is to know because there is not a thing that i don't know about Aretha. And for the record it has already been brought. You can read every book you want about, good know i have been through half of them but the bottomline is you don't know Aretha. Aretha is a human being. And sometimes she is going to be nice and sometimes she is going to be cold. Tell me one person on this earth that is nice 100% of the time.

  • @TheQueenAretha

    love this

    ELX-PyYc4Ss

  • mabe.. aretha was just jealous of whitney being the hot new star at arista.

    even narada compares them here

    RZhG0asOHpU

  • You mean like Whitney was jealous of Mariah being the hot new star in the business?

  • You have missed much loads of this has been written by Aretha herself if you read her autobio and her interviews with both David Nathan and Mark Bego. First Aretha's fight with Luther was more than just the fees he was charging. She had several fights over their 'friendship/ working relationship. Mostly it was about Luther's suggestions on how she should sing, in Aretha's own words. As well as Aretha's games with Clive regarding her contract she openly admitted.

  • Of course when you are working with someone with an period of time you are bound to have disagreement. You are right about Luther's suggestions.

  • @TheQueenAretha

    lol... you've been served

    go on nanenoah

  • The truth is Aretha is a very complex personality. Aretha has had public fights with a host of other female stars, including Gladys, Natalie, Patti, Mavis yes even Whitney (check Narada Michael Walden)...or male stars like Luther.

At the sametime Aretha has been very respectful of her mentors, and other female stars like Dionne, Nancy Wilson and Diana Ross.

Now regarding Beyonce, it was Aretha who had her publicist to release a statement after the Grammys, not a response to a reporter!

  • @nanenoah

what about whitney.....iv seen this video and narada kinda places higher whitney over ARETHA, mariah and streisand

    RZhG0asOHpU

  • Let me repeat I love Aretha but not sure what is going on with her in general Narada stated that when Whitney and Aretha went into the studio to do their duet Aretha was really not nice to Whitney. That Aretha walked into the room and would not acknowledge Whitney. Strange behavior given that Whitney has openly praised Aretha from day one, grew up idolizing Aretha. Calling her aunt Ree. Narada stated there was just no need for Aretha to carry herself in that manner.

  • @nanenoah

interesting........ i remember watching an interview on youtube last year and the reporter told aretha that whitney idolized her and she aretha looked confussed or puzzled, thinking " o she does" or something along the lines of that.

it seems kinda strange, seeing thats her god-daughter but i get strange vibe from aretha

  • Aretha has said nothing but great things about Whitney. Like i said before, you are always putting Whitney in everything. Aretha knew that Whitney idolized her, i believe she was trying to be humble and play it off. What did you want her to be like "Yes I already knew that" grow up.

  • Don't sit here and try to make Aretha to be someone that she isn't. Everybody is always trying to make Aretha into a diva. How don't you know if Aretha hadn't already talked to Whitney beforehand. As they still keep in touch even today.

  • I think you miss much in Aretha if you want to just write off Aretha's fights as just good nature or other artist as jealous. It's not hard to simply google Aretha's publicist statement regarding Beyonce comments from last year. It's petty to say the least. Aretha is considered by most music critics the greatest female singer of the last century. Yet that does not appear to be enough for her it's sad to me. One has to do is read Aretha's own words, as well as Mark Bego's authorized Aretha book

  • I never said that other artist were jealous of Aretha, but the fight with Luther, Mavis and others were all just that. And i read the statement the day that it was reported and quite frankly she said what was on her mind. I don't care what anyone said she had the right to speak on that matter. Anyone knows Aretha is The Queen and that people associate that title with Aretha. She had every right to think that it was a cheapshot and once again the media took it and ran with .

  • The only people Aretha has had beef with is Gladys and Natalie, and the fight with Gladys has been going on since Aretha and Gladys first enter the business. Aretha never had beef with Patti, Aretha was reported saying something about the way Patti sung Ain't No Way at the Kennedy Awards, it was a joke but Patti took it the wrong way and was in tears about the thing. Mavis and Aretha had a disagreement about Aretha 1987 gospel album. Aretha has never had any beef with Whitney.

  • Patti is overly sensitive in general and frankly I find her covers of 'Ain't no Way" for inferior to Arethas. But Patti has gone on record several times about Aretha's cold treatment toward her in general. In terms of Whitney being jealous of Mariah please explain were in the word you got that from? I do please that Aretha has in recent years reached out to Whitney. Whitney has never publicly stated anything bad about Aretha.

  • Newflash everybody doesn't have to be all cheerful and upbeat 24/7, Aretha at times can give off this coldness about her, but it is simply the way she comes off. And you know that Whitney felt threaten by Mariah. It is natural, MC was the next big thing. She was being compare to Whitney and everything else. Of there was a sense of envy. Just like when Natalie became the next big thing. Whitney has never said anything bad about Ree and Ree has never publicly said anything about Whitney.

  • Michael Walden only wrote about what he thought was going on. Aretha and Whitney never had any real fued. And on the account of Luther, Aretha was upset with the fee Aretha was charged for having Luther as a producer. Luther had a big ego himself and they had disagreements about it. At the end Aretha was good friends with Luther, as with Mavis, Patti, Natalie and Whitney all are still in Aretha's circle.

  • Michael Walden stated that he was in the room ( it's on film)when Whitney was sitting right beside of him. He words was that Aretha was not nice and dismissive and Whitney was hurt. Recently the interview has been showed on A&E.

  • Ok i can't jusifty that but i have heard of it, but whether it is filmed or not, there is no ill feeling between Aretha and Whitney.

  • @nanenoah she had beef with Gladys and what was her beef with Gladys?????....never heard of that one....and I didnt know about Mavis either interesting I would like to know about this one

  • good for you..... aretha isnt known for say a lil prayer eventhough she covers it so often....... natural women, respect, think and chain of fools are aretha's core signature songs as are walk on by, say a lil prayer, alfie, a house is not a home are to dionne's

  • i promote, whitney? lol... i barely talk about her outside of the range and comparison videos..... you on the other hand, have been in so many bitch fights, its laughable... everyime i come across one the convos your in when your being bitch slapped for being a dumbass

  • Yes and the bitch that i am usely fighting with is you. It is an endless battle with you. And to tell you the truth you will never get it.

  • next... your going to be telling me" walk on by" is aretha's song too...... both of these songs that aretha covered were TAILORED FOR DIONNE

  • They might of been TAILORED for Dionne but Aretha took them both and made A BETTER VERSION. And to answer your question no i don't think "Walk On By" is Aretha's song but i do believe that Aretha's version of it is better.

  • great for you.... most ppl prob think otherwise

  • I think if most people would listen to Dionne's version and than listen to Aretha's version, i believe Aretha's covers would be liked better over Dionne. Someone made a video comparing Aretha's and Dionne's version of Say A Little Prayer and Aretha version won out.

  • good for you

  • aretha is yukkky sounding

  • Thats a Duell not a Duett

  • loved the tension lol

its dionnes song but aretha covered it but kinda claims it has her own

  • No my dear, Aretha made this her song. Aretha's version is more well known and Burt will tell you himselt that Aretha's version is better than his own version.

  • The only place were Aretha's version is better known is England were it did chart higher. Dionne had the bigger hit ( sold tons more records of this song) throughout the world including in the America check the charts and numbers. QueenAretha I do agree that Burt has stated that Aretha's version is better because of her pacing is faster. But you do yourself no credit by running to Dionne videos an attempts to discredit Dionne brilliant skills to lift Aretha. Aretha does not need it.

  • @nanenoah , DIonne had a slightly bigger hit, both were million sellers, Dionne went gold. But Aretha's version is the one more people relate to. And i am not on here disrespecting anyone, there is a Whitney fan by the name of dungaboyd1 who is disrespecting Aretha and i am giving him the truth. And this isn't an Dionne video, it is an Aretha video. I am not the one with the problem, tell that trouble maker dungaboyd1 to shut her mouth.

  • When I stated running to a Dionne video fight you had on a video clip of Dionne alone. To me this is a Aretha and Dionne video. By the way a gold record in the sixties was million in sales. I must add that I think if an Aretha fan to name the top ten Aretha hits "I say a little prayer' would not even make the top 20. If one was to ask an average Dionne fan 'I say a little Prayer" would be in her top ten no doubt. By the way Hal David stated he loved Dionne's version better. Both records great

  • And guess who else was there. dungaboyd1 was there. She was starting trouble, slandering Aretha and trying to hype up Dionne. Like i said both Aretha and Dionne's versions were million sellers. Whether you like it or not Aretha version is the one people remember and Aretha own just as much right to the song as Dionne.

  • Queen It's clear you have some strong opinions some of which are not rooted in any real facts. "People remember" is a boad statment at best and I gave you several example of where you are completely off base. Give me an example of one people remember? You may blame all of this infighting with others but it's clear you are enjoyin creating your own reality. I am sure you make Aretha 'proud'. By the way I don't recall anyone most of me stating that Aretha did not have the right to sing the song

  • No what i say are facts. When Natalie Cole does a duet with Whitney Houston, Natalie says, "I want to do an old ARETHA classic" the old Aretha classic she is talking about is Say A Little Prayer. I am not making up my own reality,i am stating the fact which you can't handle.

  • You are right this is same Natalie that walks around on egg shells around Aretha to this day, because of her 'fights' with Aretha in the past. Ok this is were I step away from you it's is clear you still don't get it. And I am not the person to help you get it, hopefully you will get it at some point. Again 'one person, does not a all people make.

  • @nanenoah

what do you mean " You are right this is same Natalie that walks around on egg shells around Aretha to this day, because of her 'fights' with Aretha in the past."

please share, whatever you know or heard

  • I love Aretha but during the 70's some reporters were calling Natalie Cole the new queen of soul. Aretha was angry, refused to talk to Natalie even after Aretha's sisters stepped and told Aretha to talk to Natalie. Aretha refused they have maintained a chilly relationship for many years. Aretha all but admitted that she was angry about the press and felt that Natalie was not being a good friend. Natalie has stated for years that she has tried to make up to Aretha...with mixed results.

  • Once you don't even know half of what you are talking about. You are right that when Natalie came out there was talk about her being the new queen of soul, but that wasn't what cause the beef with Aretha. It was Natalie remarks that cause the fight. She made some remarks about Aretha and Diana Ross. Aretha responsed in Jet by saying that Natalie is justs begining. Thats what caused troubled between Ree and Natalie for many years. Aretha ignored her for many years

  • I have to disagree with you on this one. I remember the Dionne version when it came out (barely) and thats the one that stuck with me until Diana Kings version came out.

  • One of the problems with these kinds of discussions is the lack of reference point for some fans. I know the music of both ladies very well and have parents, relatives, and music teachers who were around few question that the music of BB-HD is Dionne's associated. More to the both this record was a double-sided hit for Dionne with the b-side being Valley of the Dolls As I stated if one traveled the world that's the association it does not take away from Aretha wonderful recording in the least.

  • I don't think Aretha ever stated that the song is hers, Aretha admires Dionne and the songs she sang. Look at the number of Dionne records that Aretha has covered over the years. I think people want the two to fight no such luck. Aretha is a genius but so is Dionne...Burt stated he did not know any singer alive who could do what Dionne did musically with the songs that he and Hal David wrote.

  • I believe Aretha own just as much right to the song as Dionne. Aretha has a great deal of respect for Dionne. They are very good friends I have no hard feelings for Dionne at all. It is just one fan that gets on my ever loving nerves.

  • Like most Bacharach David songs this song was written for Dionne period. Aretha loved the record and only recorded it because she was in the recording studio with the Sweets who had sang background on Dionne's record. I still don't think that more people relate to Aretha's version as I stated the song was bigger hit for Dionne worldwide than for Aretha that's a fact. Even in pop culture this is still a Dionne song, look at "my best friends wedding', 'clueless' etc....related as Dionne.

  • @TheQueenAretha

LOL... one fan.... you have over 10 disputes going on at this moment because they dont think aretha is the queen you make her out to be

  • No has to make Aretha into anything. She is The Queen and i can say that without a doubt in my mind.

  • then if she the undisuputed queen, you dont have to go all around youtube hyping her!!!

  • I don't go around youtube hyping Aretha. Aretha doesn't need to be hyped. You have no business talking, they way you seem to bring promote Whitney as though you are Clive hisself.

  • There is some rivalry between the two because of this song?

  • No none...

  • i think that quote from carlos santanna perfectly seperates dionne and aretha...... 'listen she never overdoses on soul, or her own voice'.

exactly the opposite of aretha IMO

  • why do you watch her videos if u dont like her, *sighs* and shakes my head at no life youtubers

  • because i watch dionne videos, lol and dionne just happens to be in the video if you noticed

  • well, if you dont have nothing nice to say, dont say anything. and since u watched it for her, comment on her.

  • lol, i did

  • oooook

  • @dungaboyd1

Dionne is quoted as saying " there isnt a singer alive, male nor female, who wouldn't just love to be able to do what aretha does vocally" I have the video of that..so that sums up how she feels about Aretha.

  • What the hell are you talking about, Dionne wouldn't know soul if it bit her on her ass. Aretha is the Queen of Soul, no one does soul better than Aretha. Aretha never overdoes soul, she is alway perfect. Whether you like it or not Aretha version kills Dionne's version. Especially Live.

  • LOVE IS IT

  • I just love this historic video of the two most remarkable pop and soul girl singers of the 60s coming together on a song they each had a hit with. What a treat! Cool to compare their unique approaches and how they pull it off.

  • historic document thanks a lot for posting it

  • Two totally different styles but they did it well together. I love the way they were not trying to sing over each other. Aretha is always going to be LADY SOUL and Dionne will always be SMOOTHER THAN ICE. Dionne reminds me of the best days of my life as a child a beautiful spring or summer day. Aretha reminds me of the good times i had as a child with my family as we would have parties or sing alongs. GOD how i miss those days so much and the pure fun we had back then. Those days were just fun.

  • I highly recommend viewing the Aretha Franklin version of this song, on youtube as "Aretha Franklin - I Say A Little Prayer". Go watch it NOW! This was a BBC performance and the Queen of Soul flat tore it up! This duet with Dionne doesn't do justice to her version of this great song. Props to Dionne's version, too, of course!

  • Beautiful.

  • Detroit will always love and appreciate you Ms Franklin.

  • I proudly second that....!!!!!!!!

  • Dionne was so damn sexy in that halter top! I wish someone would post a clearer clip of this historic performance between the Queen of Pop and the Queen of Soul. Truly 2 of our treasures. Love 'em!

  • two great singers just singing together and not against each other.

Dionne does come out the church and can wail with the best of them when she lets loose.

But that's Aretha Franklin and if the Queen wanted to go note for note, with range, chest and overall power its no contest.

But they didn't need to have that occur

Dionne Warwick is one the classiest and best singers who have ever lived..

Aretha Is without a doubt the greatest singer that God has ever produced

  • Dionne has wonderful and light/agile pharsing while Aretha sets a clear soulful and creative powerful pressence. Long live the queen of soul and the interpreter of 60's contemporary pop.

  • Aretha WAS.

  • Aretha was, is and has always set a clear soulful and creative powerful presence and that won't change.

  • at solid gold in 1980 or 81....nice;)

  • what does it mean "to hear gospel" in a voice? Didn't Dionne come from the same church tradition that Aretha did, the tradition that has given us so many brilliant singers, from Sam Cooke to Ray charles to Dionne to Aretha to Whitney? Just wondering

  • my two favorites!

  • legend09123, Aretha exactly knows what Dionne is definitely capable of too. Let's make know mistake about that. She can be subtle one minute and then turn it totally inside out in chest and head voice the next second. Please!!!

  • Aretha all the way, that's all i have to say!

  • best of both world's no questions about it...period

  • What a gorgeous duet !

  • I just wish this were better quality. Thanks for posting though. Two legends performing a song they each made a classic in their own way. i would have to say I give the slight edge to Dionne's version. But Aretha's verison is HER version and it can stand ALONE. Ree Ree acted like the song had never been recorded before and was like.. Ok, this is what it should sound like...LOL. I truly love them Both!!!

  • Vocally, Dionne really can't be dealt with. She brings so much to the table. Dionne is so underated by those that don't know her. She's a treasure to those that do know her work. And that Aretha - THE BEST - Period. Aretha can do the things that Dionne does vocally, but she also plays piano. When Aretha recorded this song, she played piano and that performance alone almost overshadows any vocal comparisons/arguments. You can hear the gospel in Dionne's Voice&Aretha makes you hear and FEEL it

  • You're right about everything, but I have to correct you in one thing:you cannot hear gospel in Dionne's voice, just ''classiness'' :))

  • Love both of them in their own right. They are at the top of my list.I LOVE both of their voices. Dionnes phrasing and subtelty(sp) pretty much put her on a plato ALONE. I don't understand why some don't see that Dionne can Blow the doors off with her power. She just has the ability to do so much with her voice...why use just one facet. She has a gospel background, earned a scholarship in music where she later earned a doctorate, before teaming with one of the great Burt Bacharach.

  • are you insane Dionne can wail, you must not know, she is subtle but when she needs to go there she can go there.

as far as her being flat, i have never heard Dionne Warwick ever being flat, you don't get a doctorate an earned one singing flat.

also would love to see her sing and play the piano, yes she does, as well as read music.

as far as Aretha Franklin she is the greatest singer who has ever lived.

But make no mistake Dionne Warwick is stone cold

  • Dionne is Whitney Houston's Aunt. Singing is in her blood, but her genes must be from the other side of the family (her Fathers) cause she can't wail or run up the scales like her Aunt Cissy Houston (Dionne's Mother's Sister), and her niece Whitney.
