Well I am not a South Indian, but this comment by Mr. Singh is absolutely baseless and wrong. Though I consider that AR Rehman has composed much better music than the one that was awarded, but what is this greatness about composing a ghazal if someone gets josh! This is ridiculous at best, and cynical at worst. I do not even listen to Rehman music myself, but no body can deny that he composes beautiful and complex pieces.

Jagjit Singh was angry only because Ghaxal has not been given importance over Bollywood music. Earlier there used be lot of ghazals in movies but things have changed now. He wanted Music directors to include ghazals in movies. I am pretty sure he had no grudge against Rahman. he was a good guy. Comparing Rahman to him is like comparing Apple to Oranges. For sure A.R.Rehman is a good music director, no doubt. If he is a great music director with a few hit songs then he is no close to other great music directors of Hindi films like S.d.Burman, Naushad, Shankar Jaikishan, O.P.Nayyar, Lakshmikant Pyarelal, Kalyanji Anandji who have countless hit songs to their name. @adityanaikdesai I'm sure you know the difference between composing and singing. In the south, composers command more respect than singers since they compose the tune, musical arrangements and choose the singers. Singers have limited scope as they have to perform and improvise within the scope of the tune (not saying that is easy, mind you). It might be different in the north - all the northies I have talked to have more respect for Lata or Rafi than RDB or Salil.
@adityanaikdesai That should also explain why Ilayaraja is venerated in the south but not so much in the north. Do you know that Ilayaraja has composed for more than 900 movies (and counting) in addition to several other devotional and fusion albums. No disrespect to any singer but do you think any singer's achievement compares to that?

@adityanaikdesai I have nothing but respect for Jagjit ji. But, I can't accept that you could be considered a great only if you compose ghazals. There are other genres of music that are equally great. I don't think Ilayaraja has composed too many, if any, ghazals but he has composed a WC Symphony. The fact that Jagjit isn't an exponent in WC music doesn't make him ordinary. Same way, Rahman is also good. Problem with some legends is that they tend to look down upon other forms of music.

In 2010, he composed 3 tamil albums:"vinnaithaandi varuvaaya", "Raavanan" and "Enthiran". All of them were well received. Mind you, there is no dearth of talent in the south - Ilayaraja is still the best, Yuvan, Harris and others. Hype can only take a person so far. Rahman has been around for around 20 yrs and still going strong. Forget "jai ho", did you listen to "127 hours"?

2 years back? I can tell you of a song ARR composed almost 2 decades back! Shows the ignorance in you. The entire nation still remembers ARR's haunting melodies in Bombay, Roja, Dil Se etc etc. I'm sorry but ARR came into the field only by 1992 so I can't give you a song before that. But there is another MD Illayaraja. "Senthazahm poovil" song came in 1978. All of Tamil Nadu still remembers that.

Jagjit and Mehndi Hassan both truly have a gift that they take their time, as far as, A.R. Rahman, he is doing this only to make it thru a movie song. So he cheapens and devalues a beautiful poem (such as Gulzar's poems) by making it a cheap bollywood song. Ghazals don't come by too often, but you can hear A.R Rahman everywhere and I can see where Jagjit is coming from now. Plagiarizing will only get him so far before he gets caught.
Pankaj Udhas is "has been" he should really shut up because he is terrible singer. Jagjit takes a poem and makes it beautiful with singing it. It takes a lot of guts to actually take a classic poem to make it a ghazal like Jagjit and Mehndi Hassan.
Jagjit is very well known and very creative singer. I would hate to be in his bad list. Maybe A.R. Rahman stole his song, who knows, but I am only biased because I am Jagjit's diehard fan. I don't think the world respects A.R. Rahman like Jagjit because Jagjit has been singing for decades and knows his stuff...as far as A.R. Rahman goes, he is just starting with this his gift, its hard not to like them both.

AR has given great classical compositions with the lyrics of Gulzar and Javed Akhtrar. Today they don't make movies like Mughal E Azam and Pakeeza. But he did great composition in Jodha Akbar. It was mesmerizing. Jagjit is a loser.

Rahman maybe good with one or two songs at the most, but he is under a lot of pressure to keep pumping great classics for bollywood movies, he is not doing this from his heart he is doing it under a lot of heat. Though I consider that AR Rehman has composed much better music than the one that was awarded, but what is this greatness about composing a ghazal if someone gets josh! In the south, composers command more respect than singers since they compose the tune, musical arrangements and choose the singers. Singers have limited scope as they have to perform and improvise within the scope of the tune (not saying that is easy, mind you). It might be different in the north - all the northies I have talked to have more respect for Lata or Rafi than RDB or Salil.

There are other genres of music that are equally great. I don't think Ilayaraja has composed too many, if any, ghazals but he has composed a WC Symphony. The fact that Jagjit isn't an exponent in WC music doesn't make him ordinary. Same way, Rahman is also good. Problem with some legends is that they tend to look down upon other forms of music.

In 2010, he composed 3 tamil albums:"vinnaithaandi varuvaaya", "Raavanan" and "Enthiran". All of them were well received. Mind you, there is no dearth of talent in the south - Ilayaraja is still the best, Yuvan, Harris and others. Hype can only take a person so far. Rahman has been around for around 20 yrs and still going strong. Forget "jai ho", did you listen to "127 hours"?

ARR is only doing for getting thru from one movie to another, he is not doing this because he enjoys its or sharing his gift to give others pleasure like Jagjit. I understand there are not ghazals in the movies, but who wants to watch actors lipsync'ing ghazals in movies. Ghazals were meant to be desired and appreciated which ARR will never get it. Jagjit has a historically trumped one ghazal after another and has been successful for decades. ARR just woke up yesterday copying songs.

2 years back? I can tell you of a song ARR composed almost 2 decades back! Shows the ignorance in you. The entire nation still remembers ARR's haunting melodies in Bombay, Roja, Dil Se etc etc. I'm sorry but ARR came into the field only by 1992 so I can't give you a song before that. But there is another MD Illayaraja. "Senthazahm poovil" song came in 1978. All of Tamil Nadu still remembers that.

Jagjit and Mehndi Hassan both truly have a gift that they take their time, as far as, A.R. Rahman, he is doing this only to make it thru a movie song. So he cheapens and devalues a beautiful poem (such as Gulzar's poems) by making it a cheap bollywood song. Ghazals don't come by too often, but you can hear A.R Rahman everywhere and I can see where Jagjit is coming from now. Plagiarizing will only get him so far before he gets caught.

Jagjit is very well known and very creative singer. I would hate to be in his bad list. Maybe A.R. Rahman stole his song, who knows, but I am only biased because I am Jagjit's diehard fan. I don't think the world respects A.R. Rahman like Jagjit because Jagjit has been singing for decades and knows his stuff...as far as A.R. Jagajit singh sings gazzal since he cannot sing anything else...Also he may be great as he has some good gazzals but I like to listen to Gulam ali, Ustad Amir Khan, Nustart Fateh ali khan..thoes guys can create MEHEFIL with their gazzal and associating single tabla player and some string instruments.
For Jagjit, more fiddle and piano team than audience.

Kehna he Kya, Jiya Jale, Thuhire, songs from 1947 Earth... and there are numerous Gazal type of songs in Tamil as well to point out the class and ability of AR Rahman. He is much superior to Jagjith Singh!

He can easily do it, He has done Bhajans like Man Mohana, O paalanhaare, He has done classicals like Man Mohini, He has done sufi like Haji Ali, and Khwaja...and he also does western...what he does is the requirement of the project...If you think you are a complete musicians can you give what Rahman gives?
