Before we lost him, I used to always see Dewey at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting (the Ala-Nest) near Rosco and Louise. Very nice guy but not real fond of Neil Young, felt like they cheated him.
This WTAI "Where the Action Is" video came out in late Feb./early March, 1967. The ABC-TV show, hosted by Dick Clark--a spinoff from "American Bandstand"--went off the air in late March, 1967 due to poor ratings, so the 'Springfield" got in while the chance was there.
@CuyahogaMustang Nah, Neil always did lead guitar in the Springfield, and I think this was recorded during one of the many times when he had dropped out of the group (CSN didn't give him the nickname "Sometimes" for nothing).
I always hated it when the network shows would play the record in the background and have the band lipsync to it. Somehow I hear electric guitars but I'm seeing accoustics. i wonder if the band did this to make the networks look foolish. Another person who was great at doing this was Zac...from the Lovin' Spoonfull. He would use take his hat off in the middle of his solo. Very funny.
@daytoncapri Neil split from the band. At one point, they even brought in David Crosby from the Byrds to replace Neil. Such is life with Neil Young. But to Steve Still's credit, he's gone on record and said that Neil's done that a bunch of times to him and, yes, it hurts (on many levels) when that happens, but whenever they do eventually get back together, for however long that is, the music is so good that he just can't say no.
That's not Neil Young on bass. It's Ken Koblun, Young's old friend and bandmate from Winnipeg, who played in Neil Young & The Squires. He'd met Stills in Thunder Bay the same time as Young, and in early '66 Stills talked him into coming down to LA to start what would become the Springfield. After a couple of weeks of starving in LA, Ken went back home - just as Young and Palmer were making the hearse trip down to LA. Later, when Palmer was busted, Koblun filled in for a while.
