I have been a fan of both of these incomparable singers since I was a child. Mariah Carey amazes us with her high octave range and whistle register. Whitney Houston brings a powerful, soulful voice that simply can't be touched however. And if you look at some of her live performances from the early 90s and in the 80s...she can hit just as many high notes and sustain them much longer than Mariah..if you ask me her interpretation and techique of songs are more skillful in the studio and live.

if they both shout or do the highest note together, we are not going to hear mariah. whitney has a monstrous powerful voice. but if im only to listen to only one of them im going to choose maria. shes got better technique and sounds more soulful. music is not always about who is louder or who has the highest tone, its still more about the melody. mariah is just more pleasant to listen to. my opinion.

Maria Carey is more multifaced. Whitney has a power belting, OR HAD a power belting but Mariah can sing softly in a very high Note and can belt with Power. She sings the highest and lowest Note in this Performance and when Mariah starts hittin high Notes, she never hold the Mic so close like Whitney.
Mariah Carey writes/produces her own POP/RNB/BALLADES Songs and no one in the World, could hit high Notes like she did. Her Mother was a Opera Singer, so she has different Backround,.

@MrBarBarozz Whitney houston falsetto is strong and thick and beautiful, while Mariah's is what we call "airy" but whitneys is stronger for instance google whitney houston song "after we make love" or "all the man I need" to hear a strong falsetto, also mariah carey is not the only person to hit a "high note" ever heard or Minnie Rippleton? or Lisa Fischer? there a thousands of other singers who could do what she does, and btw hitting a high note is not SINGING a high note thats a big difference

First of all, i love music and listen to both records, when u call artists to analyse their register and listen how they sing and call that "obsessed", thats your subjective opinion and please everyone knows Minnie but she couldnt hit that high Notes, that Mariah hit and hits. For u airy, but i just can hear 4:00 Mariah when she hits that High Notes and its her Style to sing airy Vocals too. I say just "Butterfly" and "I´ll be there" u know NOTHING about her talk so much no sense.

lol...during their heydays, Whitney has the best voice ever, full and powerful though not as high as MC. MC may have higher range but thinner. Today, MC IS A TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT at live performances!!! Her gestures are so annoying and she sounds so hard-up... hahahaha...she needs to retire soon.

as weird as they both are (especially mariah - whitney's just had an awful taste in men), no one can deny that those two have among the best female voices there have ever been. and there are very very few who would be in their league.

i can't believe my eyes... i'll take in consederation that you have no musical experience or musical education... but in this performance the only one who was out of tune was whitney... and mariah beat her in upper notes, the look at the end tells you everything.... i admit mariah wasn't her best at oscar performance but in this one she did mch better... put subjectivity a side, just listeng, first part of whitney was out of tune and key....

The only reason that Whitney outdid Mariah at the oscars is because she is so rude. Whitney wanted to overpower her and take her part, (the climax was given to Mariah at the performance) but whitney was so rude and Mariah was so nice that she took the microphone away of her mouth and smiled and let whitney continue. thats when Whiney;s fans started saying that she outdid Mariah, and they know deep down that that can never happen.

no thats not true.. both are amazing, but the quality in Mariah's voice is so unique.
the control is amazig , the vocal ability is incredible.
Mariah has a higher vocal range in which she holds a world record for. the whistles and everything.
this video proves that both are great.
But i am sorry to say that Mariah is way better..

And your point? MC in her best day could NOT ever hold a candke to WH in her best day. BOTH are well past their prime. MC NEVER gave those goose-bump giving performances like WH did. You might wanna check out some of WH's recent Russian perfomrnaces, her voice is still there. MC's has NEVER been there outside of a studio. And in terms of POISE and ELEGANCE on stage FEW match WH. Go sit your tired ass down the Whitney now is a woman who sing ballads that doent require a lot of efforts. Her songs are not as grand as they used to be, do your research. Watch live performances of whitney today and live performances of mariah. and you can see that mariah still has a great voice.
