At one time, there was some agreement seeing as to how blacks didnt have land or much of anything to themselves, where they would work on a plantation for some white land owners that promised them food, shelter, and eventual ownership of their own land. These promises weren't kept and anybody looking at these events would call it slavery. So technically the black man would be a servant..

There is no walking around the central idea that he/she was working for goods and not receiving them.
