  • he's my second cousins third cousin

  • many thanks for this video. derek is my mums cousin, great to see this he is the spitting image of my grandfather, never met derek though, my mum has not seen him from they were little!

  • Amazing player. Do you know Derek Jeter of the Yankees is named after The Turk. Derek Sanderson Jeter. Jeter's dad was a BIG fan of Sanderson. Betcha didn't know that? Great tribute to an amazing athlete.

  • # 16 The Turk was my all time favorite Bruin ... still is

  • SONG PLEASE?

  • Good tribute.

Although perhaps it should also be mentioned that it was Derek Sanderson who, at forty seconds into overtime in the fourth and final game of the 1970 Stanley Cup finals against the the St Louis Blues, from behind the net of goaltender Glenn Hall, passed the puck onto the stick of Robert Orr.

  • I love this guy... great tribute!

  • ..Derek Turk Sanderson...

  • Derek Sanderson was a lion on the ice and everyone knew it. The only thing that matters is Derek's love for the game and his skill as a hockey player - watch him handle the puck. He was a huge part of the Big Big Bad Bruins and they probably got the name because of him. (and Teddy Green) I met him once and told him that, as a kid, I was lucky enough to watch him play - Thanks Derek for some of the greatest hockey ever and thanks for posting this vid.

  • Through the good will of friends like Bobby Orr, who spent his own money to get Derek into rehab, he cleaned up his act. He also required several surgeries to repair his hips so he could just walk without crutches.

Sanderson (along with Orr) organized a firm in Boston that provides professional financial advice to athletes so they don't wind up broke like he did. Derek also mentors athletes to steer them away from the life of hell he put himself through.

    He has my respect!

  • My mom named me after this guy, first time I've ever seen his game. Looks good.

  • hey like all of us we finally grow

  • Man, those were the days...

  • A guy who gave 100% every night every shift...until his demons took it all away. When he left Boston to play with the Rangers he was a shell of his former self, playing 80 proof most of the nights. Almost a tragedy, Orr helped him get back on his feet and his is now a sucessful buisnessman.

  • Sanderson is a badass.

  • we love you derek

  • Derek was the heart and soul of the late 60s and 70's Bruins teams. After his career was over, he flamed out with alcohol and drugs, but has been sober now for years...according to Sports Illustrated, Bobby Orr paid for several rehab stays. He has two biographies in existance that I know of: "I've Got To Be Me," by Stan Fischler, and "The Derek Sanderson Nobody Knows," by Gerald Eskanazi. They are probably both out of print, but Amazon or ebay may have copies to buy, or try the local library.

  • The Turk. Once he had about $6000 stolen from his glove compartment, which was a ton of money in the early 70s.

  • Man this brought a tear to my eye. Derek Sanderson was my boyhood idol and actually still is even though I'm 51 now, He is one of the few that I would consider and Honor to to shake hands with. Yaz and the 2 remaining Beatles are the only other 3.

  • That guy is my great uncle, like ligit.

  • @mickeydees97 not possible

  • Comment removed

  • @xSandman16x you calling me a fucking liar ? huh ? well im not hes my dads uncle; heck, my dad was NAMED after him !!!! so stfu and never say that again, im living proof its possible !!! so fuck off ..

  • @mickeydees97 ok then, tell me your last name

  • @mickeydees97 You never responded, just saying

  • A nice tribute to Derek Sanderson.

  • He was awesome face-off man and new how to do sweep check better than anyone!!

  • Seeing Mr. Sanderson in his prime gives me shiivers. Thanks, eh!

  • GREAT PLAYER!

  • Found the vid I was lookinf for. AWESOME.

  • That was awesome. I was 10 when the "the big bad bruins" won the cup in 1970, at home in Eastie! TV38, Don Earle, I can still remember every players name and number from that team. Hockey was different then, those guys lived as hard they played. Derek would drink schlitz and smoke cig's between periods. tough as nails. I have been trying to find video of the time the Rangers attacked Derek in the corner of a game at MSG. Grab Stan Fischlers book. "Big Bad Bruins" if you can find it amazing stuf

  • sanderson abused everything but you cant hate. has was awesome and a great player. if he had his head screwed on right he would have been a hall of famer. i miss those days. Orr, espo, pie cheevers-etc etc

  • He had HUGE talent.

  • He was a good guy, many years ago. I had a chance to meet him several times. At his Boston nightclub, Zelda's. Wish I was that age again. Good luck to him, I like him.

  • Boston had such a great team that Sanderson was on the 3rd line.

  • what exactly was sanderson abusing? booze?

  • @hellbombx sanderson was like a lot of old school players, with a well developed drinking ability. his life went off the rails when coke and pills entered his life.

clean and sober now, derek's life has never been better.

peace to him and his family

  • @hockeybooks I'm really happy to see how well he's doing these days.

  • @hockeybooks I'm happy to see how well he's doing these days.

  • my parents named me Derek after him.

  • As good as he was, he coulda been so much better...

  • Thats a Top Tribute fella. Brought back some good memories of TV38, Derek and Fred what a double act.

  • if the Bruins don't lose Sanderson, Cheevers, and Mckennzie, to the WHA in 1972, they probably win 2 mabye 3 more cups.

  • They also had to trade Stanfield they're # 2 center in order to get Gilles Gilbert who replaced Cheevers. I think they also lost a couple of other players besides the ones you mentioned.

  • This is good, thank you for the post. It brought back memories.

  • he could play

  • 0:20 to 0:30

LOVE IT! Sanderson throws opponent's jersey into the crowd ... fetch bitch!

  • sanderson was the best center when the game was on the line

  • nice!!!

  • It's amazing...the fact that Sandy topped out at 170 pounds he was as rugged as the come. A fearless SOB.

  • What a great tribute!!!!!!!!!

  • how do u have a saderson tribute and not have the video of him challenging the whole rangers bench?

  • i dont have that clip ,

you'll hafta settle for the rangers jumping sanderson after emile francis put a bounty on sanderson

you aren't confusing wensink challenging the stars bench , are you ?

  • hey do you know if there's a autobiography, or a biography of Derek Sanderson?

  • there's an awesome 1970 braggadacio book titled

"I've Got to be Me " written with Stan Fischler

i am not aware of any post-sobriety books

  • @hockeybooks

Also the book called "The Derek Sanderson nobody Knows" but it came out in 1972 when he was still no.16 on the Bruins

  • @hockeybooks first book i ever read as a 7 year old kid - still my favorite to this day.

  • @hockeybooks great job...

    thanks for posting this.

  • No, He wasn't over-rated at all. Sanderson was a very, very good hockey player. If anything his lifestyle made him his own worst enemy.

  • ALL of the Bruins during that era were guilty of being excessive party hardies.

That's why they only won 2 cups, they didn't take the game seriously enough....Sanderson being the poster child of the excess.

Shame too, he was very talented

  • I love this guy,He may have been over-rated as a hockey player though.
