First, he didn't say world's oldest standing democracy and there are many societies, including the previously mentioned Icelandic Democracy, that has reasonable claim to that title.

Second, we are not a "true democracy" even today. We are a democratic republic, republic being the operative word and democratic the modifier. We also have elements of socialism and dictatorship. There hasn't been a true Athenian Democracy since the death of Pericles. Even Rome was a dual system.

San Marino has been a constitutional democratic republic since 1600 and their original constitution stands. They are small with a population of a small town, but they hold the claim as the longest standing democracy. The others are debatable, but this one isn't. You will probably dismiss it as insignificant, but it is its own sovereign nation and is a member of the UN.

The existing US government was not established in 1776 it was just a year of declaring independence; it did not mean instant government formation. The Constitution, which forms the basis for the modern US government only came into effect, by its own self definition, in 1788 and the government it defined started operations on March 4, 1789. Learn about your history, its an important step towards becoming truly proud of something. Otherwise it all fades into insignificance.
