Haha actually once I was in a halter class with a crazy horse and first, when the judge asked me to open her mouth to see her teeth, the horse bared her teeth at the judge. Then, when it was announed that we got a ribbon, the horse spun around me with a mini buck like "wahoo! We placed!" Therefore, I think horses know what's going on....

@geniemist Actually... all of the horses we know now were literally bred (ie made) for riding, or 'moving' people in some way. The only exception is the przewalski's horse.

@geniemist If you pay attention, you can understand how a horse's feelings. Animals don't hide their emotions the way we do. There are many horses that are much happier when ridden or are being ridden regularly than if they were to just sit in a field all day - even a 30 acre field with other horses. There are jumpers so happy to jump that they will do so with no extra encouragement. There are horses that run across acres of field to a person, knowing that person is there to ride them.

@03firefly good point, I agree with you...I also think horses have a good understanding what part it is they are playing and feel accomplishment when their rider is satisfied with performance but what gets to me are people who think horses, elephants, camels, are here with a purpose like there was some force that made them exclusively for humans to ride...It sounds silly, I hope you understand what I'm trying to say :)

@geniemist Actually, it was a smart human being who figured out that they could cover a lot more distance on the back of this sturdy animal. Animals that are capable of bearing our weight are used all over the world. My own horses love me a lot. When I call them, they come running, knowing that they will be worked and after riding, they will hang around and follow me around if they could. Some people misuse horses, but the horses in this video probably live good lives because they are ridden.

Nono, u can see at the end of the video - I got the ribbon. I reached for it, barely touched it, the horse jumped away again, but I was holding it between my fingers :)

But this was his first show, he was young and didnt know what was going on :) He's more than proud when he gets a ribbon now :)

When I was at my firts competition they thought than my horse is gonna be afraid of the ribbon too. Luckily it wasnt so... You should definitely try to make him(?) comfortable with it. Like try to stroke him with colourful ribbons ro I dunno... Just for your own safety. Beautiful horse by the way:D
