@Glinkaism1 Sure is. Best known for his narration of the TV classic "The Fugitive". His best known role was that of heavy set detective "Cannon" back in the 1970's.
@frankd1965 Hey, hey, Frankie. :) If you are into old radio shows, he was in a lot of them. He was the announcer for a series called "Escape." It was "designed to free you from the four corners of the universe in tales of high adventure."
Bill Conrad would have been a lot better Matt Dillon on TV! Break the stereotype of a tall matinee idol being the guy in the white hat. Bill was a beefy dude who looked like a REAL lawman! Bill also narrated "Casey at the Bat" for a radio special.
@Glinkaism1 thanks for the tidbit there. I read that when CBS decided to do "Gunsmoke" on TV. They had to pass on Wiliam Conrad who looked like the counterman at a local luncheonette. They wanted to get John Wayne being he did a lot of Western Films. But Wayne passed on it and got his old friend James Arness to play U.S. Marshal Matthew Dillon and rest was history. RIP James Arness, John Wayne and William Conrad. Gone but, not forgotten.
@frankd1965 Yes, I read that, too. :) The TV folks play it safe because they have to. Lots of money at risk. So they go with stereotypes. In my humble opinion, Jim Arness was terribly bland. The only time I watched the TV show was out of politeness, like if I were trapped at a relatives house at night. Oy! I recall one scene in the rare show I watched. There was a "Wanted Black Bart" poster on the wall at the jail. Really camp. And Chester with his limp.
@Glinkaism1 OK. True "limping actor" story. Years ago when I was a TV board engineer, "From These Ruts," (Roots) as we called the NBC soaper, had their near Thanksgiving Day show. And so the actors were skittish. Ad libs. Some cheer before the show, methinks. So here's grandad who usually limped on one leg. He comes on camera limping and upstages all the actors. They laugh. He walks back, limping ON THE OTHER LEG! Laugher! Screen goes to black. Rest of show was one huge hoot.
This was the first John Wayne movie i had ever seen. I was 8 or 9 then and I'm 20 now and I've been hooked ever since-all because of Chisum-one helluva a movie.
if only there had been a movie about shisums move to thenew ranch, rather than it just told in the opening credits. action packed, indians, raging rivers, and weather.
I love this song, I was singing it a few weeks ago in my building and this lady heard me and started to laugh. I wondered if she knew where it was from! Vegates! hahaha I know I probably spelled that wrong!
my favourite film as a kid!!!! I used to go round my house singing that shit but I didn't know the words so I was making up gibberish....thankfully video cameras weren't quite popular then so the moments are lost forever,,, phew!!! = D
@technogong hahahaha thats really cute about Chisum, I am so glad I also grew up watching John wayne, the kids today, I feel sorry for them, their heroes are crap.
This particular song was NOT performed by Merle Haggard. William Conrad is doing this spoken word piece. Merle did sing "Turn Me Around" for the film though.
I must've watched this film a hundred times and i still come back for more..!!!! A damn fine film..!!!!
