@farmgurl564 I'm not sure. It's pretty much instinctive. I'm on my 11th and 12th hamsters now (this is a very old video) and they all just pick up on it. Do you have carpeting? That might be the problem.

my hamster has an eye infection and its crusting and i would love if you told me how to wash his eyes with out hurting him please respond i don't thinck he's gona make it
@creviseboy Well my advise to you is to take him to the vet. But for temporary relief, they sell in the pet store for dogs this saline wash. It's supposed to help flush the eye. Maybe that would help?
@creviseboy he most likely won't die, my hamster has lived with a screwed up eye, just take a q tip and run it under hot water, wait for it to cool a bit and wipe off his/her eye
Hi! Awesome videos, your hamsters are so cute! The mama is really pretty too- where did you get her? Also, I am interested in getting some Robos myself (If my mom will ever let me) and I was wondering if I should get 2 females or 2 males for the best non-fighting combo. Thanks so much!!!
@MyRainbowbunny hamster reproduce in masses,be warned,i bought 1 male and female, but around 1 and the half year later i have around 6-8 of them,so u might wan to be careful about buying so many "sets(male and female)"
@SilverianNexeriaFang Right... which is why I stated that I plan on getting EITHER 2 males or 2 females. (Which obviously means no breeding) I'm wondering which gender combo works best. Nonetheless, thanks for replying.
@MyRainbowbunny It really REALLY depends on personality. I have read someplace that girl combo is better then boys. But I know that with the litter in the video above, there were 4 babies- 2 boys and 2 girls. One of the girls was EXTREMELY aggressive and I knew she'd never get along in a pair. So when I was looking for homes the boys went together and they lived happily together for rest of their lives. So it really depends on personality of the hamsters. How they interact and stuff
Ive had two sets of hamsters now, and the first set (both males) were both in the same cage and they keep fighting. Another one of my friends had two females i think and one ended up having to have the leg amputated because the other hamster had damaged it. The hamster with the amputated leg died a week later from infection. But its up to you. Its best if you have two hamster's that have grown up together in the same cage, so that they won't fight. :-)
@CamCool10 Better a tank. 1. Because the babies won't fall through the bars, 2. Because you can't clean the cage until the babies are old enough to handle- which is when they're eyes open, because you don't want to disturb the mom--- and well the tank helps with the smell
@HamsterHelper1999 The Mama carried it across the cage. Mama hamsters aren't very discriminating about what part of the body they get when they pick up their babies. But don't worry, the baby was not hurt!
Regular hamsters live 2 & a half to 3 years, how long do those lil'guys live?
I used to want to get some Chinese dwarf hamsters, but, I hate to see them die so soon. I had the regular ones, it seemed like I just got them and their life was over, tho it was almost 3 years, it went so fast :(
@mercifulmama Roborovski's can average 3-3.5 years. I saw one live till a month before his third birthday (not one of mine) Mine have all lived about 2.5 years
@mercifulmama Unfortunantly if you look at the date on this video, it's an old video and the last of the babies who was living at a friends house passed away last December- one month before his third birthday. I currently have 3 Syrian hamsters and post photos on my Flickr page- the link should be in the video description here.
cute :D i got one hamster and its a boy but i realy want to have hamster babys! so i want a girl but i only got 1 cage so can it be fight if i have them together?
@TheFluffyLollipop It's better not to if you only have one cage. Because while the father would help with the babies, the mother goes into heat again right after giving birth. Meaning she can get pregnant again almost right away. That puts extra stress on her which probably won't affect the first litter, but she may not be able to physically handle the second litter. Plus, you'll need a third cage once you separate the babies by sex. You can't put the boys in with the father
@TheFluffyLollipop Also, I don't know how long you've had your boy for. But if it's been more then a month you run the risk of the boy fighting with the girl besides for mating. So you would really want to have a second cage anyways.
can a boy hamster have babies because my friens hamster had babies and he doesnt know if its a boy of girl because the guy at petsmart said it was a boy and now hes not sure
@schuylerfran Petstores often mis-sex roborovski hamsters as they're the hardest to sex. The trick is that on the female the two holes are next to each other and on the male they're about a centimeter apart.
Males can't have babies so your friends hamster has got to be a girl.
@strawberryblossom121 The boys have about a centimeter of space between the two holes, and on the girls the holes are right next to each other. If you ever doubt, always put the hamster in with the boys- that way you only risk one pregnant hamster versus putting a boy in with a cage of girls and ending up with lots of pregnant girls
@ILuvToEatKookiez Most vegetables are fine. Just be careful not to supplement their food too much (Hamsters LOVE vegetables but when you give too much they'll eat the vegetables instead of their hamster food- and their food has other important vitamins and nutrients. Also, too much vegetables can cause an upset tummy. Remember, they're just little guys) Also, like if you're going to give lettuce, iceberg is the least preferable. Onions are a no no. But regular salad vegetables are fine.
@helllox21194 They can eat their babies but it's actually a really rare occurrence when that happens. If it does happen there is usually a very good reason why it did. The mothers can get scared from loud noises, if the nest isn't left alone and you bother her too much, if there is something wrong with the baby, if the mother can't physically take care of the number of babies she'll 'cull' the nest, if she got pregnant when she was too young, or too soon after another birth etc
naww the hamster snuck out of her cage like a secret little ninja and then stole a bunch of little babies from some puppies down the street! ;) geez that was a DUH question.
@ThatLilKidLeann Unfortunantly no. One I lost track of the owner. But the three (one of which was mine) that I kept track of, the last passed away December 2009.
Cute! It looked like the mom was a little rough with that baby at the 1st of it! I don't think I could have the babies like that. I would be a nervous wreck! They are so small!! Still adorable, though!
@96misspunkette Oh no, they're not bad. I started off with Roborovski's. It's just easier usually to start off with the Syrians as they're the easiest to handle. Roborovski's are great. I miss having them, currently just have Syrians.
hi im wondering do you have to have a boy and a girl to breed because at are petstore sas that you cant have more than one hamster ?im just wondering because my sister has one and she wants to breed them.
i have a robo hamster its awesome exept thers one thing i dont like about it its really cute and all but you cant play with it i dont know if any ones on here whos gonna get one i still segust to get it there still really cute
Right now I'm only keeping Syrians because I have a really small studio apartment and unless I have more space I just don't have the room for the hamsters who are fun to watch but you can't play so much with. So I don't take offense at all to that comment. I know what you mean.
ohhh all the comments from yourself that you posted, seriously helped A LOT. because im getting new born dwarf hamsters tomorrow(maybe 2 weeks old or something) and it was great to get all the helpful tips!!!! thanks so muchhh!!!!
That's weird, my first comment didn't post. Yeah, so there isn't SO much out there on breeding, but there is some. My favorite book I got off of amazon and is called, "Hamster Iopaedia" A complete guide to hamster care. By: Chris and Peter Logsdail, & Kate Hovers
I woke up to find my hamsters, who i thought were brothers, to be hiding 12 little pink squeaking tinies, right before i had to go to school.
poor old dusty got uprooted and shifted and then i had 12 new names to pick, theyre freakin cute and fun, they all pased away last year sadly, RIP my litle dudes and 2 dudettes
Yeah my two parent hamsters were supposedly two girls... luckily I'd separated months before I found out one was a boy because they'd been fighting. One of these babies in the video is still alive. (Lives at a friend) He'll be 3 in January!
This video is old. But all the babies survived to live out long happy lives and one of them is still alive actually. He'll be 3 in January. Lives at a friend of mines
Not sure who this was in response to. Yes hamster mothers occasionally eat their young but it's very rare and usually happens for a reason, i.e. they're scared, they're culling the nest because they don't think they can care for all babies etc.
In regards to this video, mother hamsters aren't particular about how they carry their babies. True they sometimes carry them by the nape of the neck as cats do. Or in some cases such as this one, by the leg. I know it looks freaky but the baby was FINE.
She had a thing for a while that she'd start a new nest with just her favorite babe, the one she's carrying in the video. I'd have to use a spoon to scoop up the rest and transfer them to the new nest. Hours later she'd have moved again
Dwarfs are okay to cage together as long as they have good temperments. Just be aware if they fight a lot you may need to split them. Some dwarfs are just too territorial. And Syrians should NEVER be kept together.
cool i just decided to get one because the pet store said they are too young to determine the gender so they will only let u have one until they can know/. so u dont get 1 boy and 1 Girl and end up with 20 MORE LOL!
you have to separate the mom with the hamsters or else the mother will eat the the hamsters. I mean it litterally they eat the hamsters, I learned that the hard way a couple of years ago. :(
The babies stop nursing at 3 weeks and you separate out the mom at 3-4 weeks. You split the sexes at 6 weeks. (Though with Syrian hamsters I think it's 5 weeks when you split them)
my robo, pebbles, was acting weird today he was running around and filled his tubing up with bedding so there was no way he could get to his house, then he was running around in the main part of the cage digging tunnles in his bedding, flinging it out of his cage.i have had him for about 6 months, and he lives alone with no contact of my other hampster which is also a boy, this happend around 11:30AM and he is still acting odd 12:08PM, do you have any idea why he is being so weird
Just got home. Probably he was just playing. If you're suspecting he is a she or anything of the sort... and somehow miraculously got pregnant--- well the babies tend to squeak.
Also, robo's in general are EXTREMELY frisky. Usually it's at night though when you're asleep so you don't see it. Just this past sunday I watched my friends robo who is 2 years 8 months busy playing in a tiny cardboard box for 4 hours straight scratching frantically at the cardboard... So yes, it's normal from what I'm understanding of your description. But I wasn't there. You as the pet owner would be more likely to notice if something were wrong, if your hamster was sick or something
Darn didn't post my comment. Babies I think were about size of a nickel. Depends what the cage looks like, wire cages are all designed different, some would be fine. 3-6 babies. Feed mom milky foods like bread soaked in milk, and extra protein like hard boiled egg. Worry bout the babies later. 21 days till the babies are done nursing. After a few weeks babies are just as fast as parents.
well, i have been sryously thinking about breeding syrians or robos, i haven't decided, but also, a warning! if you have a femal hamster that hasn't had a litter yet,and she is over a yar old, DON'T breed her! her hips fuse together, and if she gets prgnant, she will die giving birth, and so will the pups,:'(
You can breed robo's at an older age. In fact it's better to breed them at about a year then when they're younger. I don't have time to look up the rat cage but you can send me a link. In regards to which to breed, the advantage robo's have is that once you sex the babies you can keep them in single sex groups till you find homes or whatever. Syrians on the other hand will start fighting starting at 6 weeks and really need to be separated individually. Also,Syrians have something like 8-11 babes
i have a male roborvski, are they ok to be put in a cage together like 4 males and 4 females, im worried if i bred him and no one takes the babys, they will kill eachother. how popular is the breed, are they easy to give to new homes, do i need to leave the male in with the female until she has the babys, should they be in the male or females cage? the male is about 4 months old maybe older he is not the cuddly hampster like my golden hamster, he is afraid of humans, how do i get him more social
It's okay to keep roborovski's in a group of 4, as long as they're introduced at a young age. People find them absolutely adorable so it's easy to find new homes in that sense, but you might want to be careful to house them with older people because they're harder to handle so not such a great children's pet. You don't need to leave the male and female together. In fact if they don't normally live together just put them in a separate box for a few hours today until she's pregnant.
The separate box is so that it's neutral territory. Make sure to supervise them. The female goes into heat about every 4 days. The best way to tame a hamster is by getting them to take treats out of your hand. It takes time. Golden hamsters are a LOT more sociable. (as you've noticed)
You can't keep teddy bear hamsters together. They're territorial so eventually one will get hurt or worse, killed.
Different hamsters have different sized litters. The roborovski dwarf featured here has between 3-6 babies. (Though I have a friend who just had 8) The larger hamsters have something along the lines of 8-11 but I don't remember exactly.
If your hamster gets pregnant, the big hamsters (Syrians) you should always supervise the two while they're together so remove the dad right away.
Dwarf hamsters if they were living together previously you can probably keep them together during the pregnancy. But be aware that while the dad WILL help once the babies are born, the mother goes into heat within a couple of hours of giving birth and can get pregnant again right away. This might seem kind of cool but it's kind of stressful on the mom if she's forced to have litter after litter which may result in hamster cannibalism because she's overwhelmed. Best not to risk it
It's usually hard-ish to tell when a hamster is pregnant. Specifically in your case because you haven't had enough interaction with her to really be able to sense minor changes. One sign is that the soon to be mom hordes food- but non pregnant hamsters horde food too, and you don't really have anything to compare it to since you haven't had her long. The pregnancy is 21 days though--- so if you bought her about a month ago, if it's pregnancy and not fat you will know in the next couple of days
Are both the mom and dad white faced? Please respond

The Roborovski dwarfs and other dwarfs are fine to keep in groups as long as their personalities match well.
ninithedreamer 1 year ago
@tombrady56 Generally sex requires a male and a female yes.. and dont breed them, only an idiot would breed pet shop hamsters.

Right now I'm only keeping Syrians because I have a really small studio apartment and unless I have more space I just don't have the room for the hamsters who are fun to watch but you can't play so much with. So I don't take offense at all to that comment. I know what you mean.

Lives at a friend of mines
ninithedreamer 2 years ago
you obviously no nothing about hamsters do you
theghaz 2 years ago
Not sure who this was in response to. Yes hamster mothers occasionally eat their young but it's very rare and usually happens for a reason, i.e. they're scared, they're culling the nest because they don't think they can care for all babies etc.
In regards to this video, mother hamsters aren't particular about how they carry their babies. True they sometimes carry them by the nape of the neck as cats do. Or in some cases such as this one, by the leg. I know it looks freaky but the baby was FINE.

cinnamonteak 2 years ago
She had a thing for a while that she'd start a new nest with just her favorite babe, the one she's carrying in the video. I'd have to use a spoon to scoop up the rest and transfer them to the new nest. Hours later she'd have moved again

is it ok having to dwarf hamster in the same cage
brenden312 2 years ago
Dwarfs are okay to cage together as long as they have good temperments. Just be aware if they fight a lot you may need to split them. Some dwarfs are just too territorial. And Syrians should NEVER be kept together.
ninithedreamer 2 years ago
Two of them, yes. More, no.

I fi got 2 robos and cleaned the cage once a week would they smell?
hm123productions 2 years ago
No it wouldn't smell. You only need to clean the cage once a week.
ninithedreamer 2 years ago
cool i just decided to get one because the pet store said they are too young to determine the gender so they will only let u have one until they can know/. so u dont get 1 boy and 1 Girl and end up with 20 MORE LOL!

ninithedreamer 2 years ago
skatekoh its both i think.Ive never had mice or rats.only hamsters. But no you shouldnt seperate the babies from the moms because:
1. The mom nertures the babies
2. The mom only will eat the babies if you touch them before their 2 weeks old.
3. Finally the mom must feed the babies feed them milk. (Dont give hamsters human milk by the way.)
ffpena1 2 years ago
you have to separate the mom with the hamsters or else the mother will eat the the hamsters. I mean it litterally they eat the hamsters, I learned that the hard way a couple of years ago. :(
EmiMelly894 2 years ago
i had 2 and they were fast i mean FAST
alfie909 2 years ago
shouldnt u separate the babies because sometime the parents can kill and eat the babies? or is that just mice?
skatekoh 2 years ago
The babies stop nursing at 3 weeks and you separate out the mom at 3-4 weeks. You split the sexes at 6 weeks. (Though with Syrian hamsters I think it's 5 weeks when you split them)

Amt126 2 years ago
my robo, pebbles, was acting weird today he was running around and filled his tubing up with bedding so there was no way he could get to his house, then he was running around in the main part of the cage digging tunnles in his bedding, flinging it out of his cage.i have had him for about 6 months, and he lives alone with no contact of my other hampster which is also a boy, this happend around 11:30AM and he is still acting odd 12:08PM, do you have any idea why he is being so weird
wolfsrose21 2 years ago
Just got home. Probably he was just playing. If you're suspecting he is a she or anything of the sort... and somehow miraculously got pregnant--- well the babies tend to squeak.
ninithedreamer 2 years ago
Also, robo's in general are EXTREMELY frisky. Usually it's at night though when you're asleep so you don't see it. Just this past sunday I watched my friends robo who is 2 years 8 months busy playing in a tiny cardboard box for 4 hours straight scratching frantically at the cardboard... So yes, it's normal from what I'm understanding of your description. But I wasn't there. You as the pet owner would be more likely to notice if something were wrong, if your hamster was sick or something

... reaserching breeding robos.
here are some more questions;
-am i able to leave the beeding pair together if they get along?
-what things should i take out of the cage, and what should stay?(ex; the silent wheel, iglos, ect.)
-what should i provide the babies as a sorce of water besides a low water bottle?
-is the easiest way to tell the gender of a robo by putting them in a glass/plastic bottle and holding them up?
-how easy is it to tell the diference between male and female robos?

I emailed you a response.

1.how big are newborn robos?
2.can i breed my hamsters in the leon rat cage( the bars are small enough for adult robos, but i don't know about the babies)
3.how many babies do they have?
4.what foods should i feed the mother besides her original food?
5.what should i feed the babies besides thier mothers milk?
6. how long does it take for robos to get to weening age?
7.how big should the bars be on a wire sided cage?
(look up leon rat cage)
8.can the babies run fast like the parents?
breyerhorsecraxy 2 years ago
Darn didn't post my comment. Babies I think were about size of a nickel. Depends what the cage looks like, wire cages are all designed different, some would be fine. 3-6 babies. Feed mom milky foods like bread soaked in milk, and extra protein like hard boiled egg. Worry bout the babies later. 21 days till the babies are done nursing. After a few weeks babies are just as fast as parents.
ninithedreamer 2 years ago
well, i have been sryously thinking about breeding syrians or robos, i haven't decided, but also, a warning! if you have a femal hamster that hasn't had a litter yet,and she is over a yar old, DON'T breed her! her hips fuse together, and if she gets prgnant, she will die giving birth, and so will the pups,:'(
also, i have a few questions:
breyerhorsecraxy 2 years ago
You can breed robo's at an older age. In fact it's better to breed them at about a year then when they're younger. I don't have time to look up the rat cage but you can send me a link. In regards to which to breed, the advantage robo's have is that once you sex the babies you can keep them in single sex groups till you find homes or whatever. Syrians on the other hand will start fighting starting at 6 weeks and really need to be separated individually. Also,Syrians have something like 8-11 babes
ninithedreamer 2 years ago
i have a male roborvski, are they ok to be put in a cage together like 4 males and 4 females, im worried if i bred him and no one takes the babys, they will kill eachother. how popular is the breed, are they easy to give to new homes, do i need to leave the male in with the female until she has the babys, should they be in the male or females cage? the male is about 4 months old maybe older he is not the cuddly hampster like my golden hamster, he is afraid of humans, how do i get him more social
wolfsrose21 2 years ago
It's okay to keep roborovski's in a group of 4, as long as they're introduced at a young age. People find them absolutely adorable so it's easy to find new homes in that sense, but you might want to be careful to house them with older people because they're harder to handle so not such a great children's pet. You don't need to leave the male and female together. In fact if they don't normally live together just put them in a separate box for a few hours today until she's pregnant.
ninithedreamer 2 years ago
The separate box is so that it's neutral territory. Make sure to supervise them. The female goes into heat about every 4 days. The best way to tame a hamster is by getting them to take treats out of your hand. It takes time. Golden hamsters are a LOT more sociable. (as you've noticed)

if i put 2 boy teddybear hamsters together will they fight?
also, how ,any babies to hamsters get most of the time?
and if my hamster gets pregne, when should i seperate the dad from the mom?
veruskita85 2 years ago
You can't keep teddy bear hamsters together. They're territorial so eventually one will get hurt or worse, killed.
Different hamsters have different sized litters. The roborovski dwarf featured here has between 3-6 babies. (Though I have a friend who just had 8) The larger hamsters have something along the lines of 8-11 but I don't remember exactly.
If your hamster gets pregnant, the big hamsters (Syrians) you should always supervise the two while they're together so remove the dad right away.
ninithedreamer 2 years ago
Dwarf hamsters if they were living together previously you can probably keep them together during the pregnancy. But be aware that while the dad WILL help once the babies are born, the mother goes into heat within a couple of hours of giving birth and can get pregnant again right away. This might seem kind of cool but it's kind of stressful on the mom if she's forced to have litter after litter which may result in hamster cannibalism because she's overwhelmed. Best not to risk it
ninithedreamer 2 years ago
i have heard of some syrian hammies getting up to 20 babies!
breyerhorsecraxy 2 years ago
what are signs that she is pregnant.i bought a male about a month ago and she seems fat. i ma new to this
fighterace34 2 years ago
It's usually hard-ish to tell when a hamster is pregnant. Specifically in your case because you haven't had enough interaction with her to really be able to sense minor changes. One sign is that the soon to be mom hordes food- but non pregnant hamsters horde food too, and you don't really have anything to compare it to since you haven't had her long. The pregnancy is 21 days though--- so if you bought her about a month ago, if it's pregnancy and not fat you will know in the next couple of days
ninithedreamer 2 years ago
thanks for the tip. she has been hoarding food alot. and i put some toilet paper i nthe cage and she took it inside the little house
