You get a court order, you get released. Court usually gives you a fine or community service. Usually not on record.

The establishment you stole it from also has the right to what's called "Civil restitution", which is also a fine so they can make up lost profits from shoplifting. Most chains such as Grocery Stores and Walmart charge $100.

Major shoplifting, such as electronics, is totally different though and is classed more like robbery.
