  • what the hell they talk about, it had finished case was solved..everybody went their way..

  • Very good movie

  • Here we go again w/ white people Praising movies that star white people , but putting down a movie like Red Tails that stars Black People. Well I also watched this movie and I liked Noomi Rapace in the original better.

  • these idiots are hard to watch.

  • The ending of the American version is loyal to the ending of the book.

  • what's with the thumbnail? is that the girl from the original adaption? it's not mara rooney

  • ella es NAOMY RAPACE

  • The beard guys remind me of characters from the onion

  • Why don't u discuss the acting?

  • Is it just me or does he kind of sound like drew carrey O _ O

  • They changed the ending, added parts of the other stories and didn't introduce half the cast. I was disappointed.

  • @Pooledogg The ending was the same as in the book, and fleshed out characters that were left out of the Swedish version. I wasn't, but any problems I had were not problems with the film itself, but with the story they were based on. I still loved the book though.

  • @095293003 That's strange because in the version I have Martin Vanger commits uicide he's not involved in an accident.

  • @Pooledogg ??? Are you talking about the swedish movie or the book. I believe he crashes in all versions, but whether Lisbeth lets him die, or if she has no chance to save him in the first place changes between versions of the story.

  • @095293003 In the US version. In the book he deliberately drives his car into an oncoming truck.

  • @Pooledogg Oh shit, I forgot about that, You're right

  • You need to see the original films WTF.

  • best movie of 2011

  • @SandmanJAAE You need to watch more films.

  • @Pooledogg i saw most of the golden globes, and academy awards nominees and most well reviewed films by critics that weren't nominated like warrior, drive etc... so im alright, just a fan of the millenium series

  • Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: From the original Swedish movie Salandar is a victim when she's a young girl. Only when she's forced to protect herself, when she realizes no one is coming to her defense, does she turns kick-ass. Great trilogy. Hesitant to watch this new version. Can't imagine how it will measure up.

  • @JozieLeePro I was hesitant too... I read the trilogy and watched the Swedish films and had my doubts with this Hollywood version because I was sick of poorly adaptions like The perfume and so called "sagas" made movies like Twilight but I gave ti a chance and I was amazed... the movie kicks ass, is an excellent adaption, the acting is great, de direction is flawless, of couse nothing will ever put up with the book but this movie is f* awsome... give it a try :D

  • @JozieLeePro

i thought it was stronger than the first movie, but I think the first time you see the story whether in book or movie form will be the definitive form of the story for you. I read the book first, so the swedish movie disappointed me. Both of the films, as well as the book, are still flawed though.

  • What the fuck was wrong about the Dark Knight?

  • The ending was the perfect commentary on real life. This movie wasn't a love story. It wasn't about a May-December romance or a happy ending. It was a detective story with 2 leads briefly and unexpectedly connecting with each other intimately. I hope Fincher directs the 2 sequals. I can't wait to see them.

  • @askarsfan2011 Fincher has said he wont direct them

  • This was not a remake of anything. It's an independent adaptation of the Swedish novel.

  • I am making this comment before ive even seen the review.

And my conclusion is: Watch the original Swedish film.

I don't know why they feel the need to make remakes that are for all intends and purposes, shot for shot remakes in English? They did it with "Let the Right One In" better in Swedish, the great Swedish TV show "The Killing" again better in Swedish, and with other languages, REC was remake like a 2 weeks later in Quarantine...better in Spanish...

    STOP IT!!!

  • @rorrt You forgot Funny Games, which I feel was on par with the original.

  • @Mcdovin1

But i think the original much necessarily be better.

Haneke made the American remake as a shot for shot. So i just think it can't be better.

The remake of REC which is Quarentine is a shot for shot.

    and Psycho shot for shot.

I just don't get the point of shot for shot remakes...

PS How many more times can i get "Shot for shot" in this reply.

  • This movie is shitty.

  • Why not focus in the movie and not in David Fincher.?

  • I really wish WhatTheFlick's reviews would get to the point. It's so drawn out.

  • Points to Matt for the Dread Zeppelin reference.

  • in the german version it goes "sometimes he pleasures her orally"

  • @wildhias SWEDISH*

  • 8.3, 8.2? the faaaak what constitutes a .1?

  • gonna watch at leakedmovies . biz

  • The rape was very important because not only is it empowering when the guy gets fucked back, but it's a commentary about how anyone can be a rape victim in society and how some of them may never receive justice for it

  • how could a woman wearing a cardigan be so hott its almost mind blowing how any woman can be so attractive in that attire. i would like to request more acrobatics from the small package that great things come in please. or at the verry least some more fitting clothes i can stare blindly at the beauty and still hear every word they all say im a man i am good at multitasking

  • very good movie :P

  • I dislike how they are judging this, yet none of them have read the books or watched the original movies..

  • I loved the movie

  • This is one of the very movies where the (rape) sex scene was critical to the movie.

  • @NonGnostic

Out of interest, why did u feel that it was critical?

  • I wasn't aware that Christy was a midget

  • What's with the Noomi Rapace screencap on the main channel?

  • 3:55 shows how uninformed they actually are...

  • @JesseBochekTV That was clearly a joke.

  • The Karen O/Reznor remix of Immigrant song is fucking amazing.

  • Lisbeth & the actress who played her was way better in the Swedish version of the films

  • @modplugrad Yes, Noomi Rapace. I think the role she played in the original Swedish version of the film was perfect and has opened up roles for her here in the U.S. (like Sherlock Holmes).

  • @shalcall I actually didn't know that she's in Sherlock Holmes. I haven't see any of them yet. I guess now I have a slightly bigger reason to do so :)

  • As for "Fincher repeating himself" - that's like saying "David Beckham's scored yet another goal, but he did it just the same way as last time - when, oh when, will he score using some different moves?" - a ridiculous criticism.

  • The title sequence was just like The World is Not Enough - but with much more Daniel Craig-era music (including probably the same profile shot of him they used in the opening of Casino Royale). But it was jarring, noisy and unsettling - perfect for getting you into the head-space needed to watch this. In fact, they should hire the guy who designed that sequence to do the next Bond (lol - it probably was him anyway).

  • I have seen this in swedish version it's very good and this one,i hope please enjoy it's movie^^' i love people make a nice movie and the acter it's make you entertain guy!!!

  • Noomi Rapace (swedish version) did a much better job of capturing Lisbeth's spirit from the books.

  • Maybe it's just me, but the 'career' of film criticism deserves little respect, as it's almost entirely subjective, whereas in politics etc., where Cenk must back his opinion with statistics, polls and facts behind him. Seems like anyone can do this, where they just go see a film and give their opinion.

  • @Yaarrr

I used to think the same thing.

These "arbiters of taste" used to wield enormous power over whether a film would sink or swim. But today, they're all on Rotten Tomatoes - and you can quickly spot when one of them's out-of-step with the rest.

You can also find which of them is genuinely in tune with which kind of movies you like - thereby saving your money (and it costs a fortune to go to the pictures these days), or giving you a shortcut to a rewarding movie-going experience

  • @Yaarrr You do at the very least need an ability to explain how the movie works for you in a coherent way. You cant just say "this was super awesome maaaaan!"

  • Great movie. Some changes from the original foreign film but still a great movie.

  • how much money did she get away with? does she ever get the man she wants?

good movie..the ending wasent the greatest BUT its a movie..lol

  • It's good remake, but Noomi is hotter as Lisbeth.

  • I saw the original (and read the book) and I liked Rooney Mara much more as Lisbeth.

  • You guys should make these thing a little longer - there's so much more that you could have talked about. Still get a good thumbs up tho.

  • and if only they had read the book, they would understand why salander could be so easily victimized. to put it simply she was certified as insane, the one who violated her was her legally appointed guardian. if she said something it was her word against his, if she attacked him she would be institutionalized. 99% of her experience with authority was them taking away her freedoms, she knew that she had to deal with the perpetrator. in the book (havnt seen the movie) she carefully plans his death

  • @kght222 she decides instead of killing him or trying to get a new guardian another way, to take over the situation, and grab the power for herself. she gets more than she anticipated, but it still works. just makes her more likely to kill him in the end. she does it because she figures that if she gets a new guardian there is no guessing if the next will be the same, or even just annoying. so she played the hand she was dealt.

  • The Gay Greying Werewolf reviewing this film seems to have such a high standard for movies that he seem to be incapable of just sitting back, enjoying a film and then admitting that he loved it.

  • that intro is fucked up, its completely wrong. not only did she not say that exactly, she didn't say not often enough, she mentions that his editor is married and her husband knows about their relationship and has for a long time, and has never been angry about it. and berger even invites kael (chuckle) to join them for new years. her even making an indication of having a sex drive in a professional setting would be entirely out of character.

  • I have such a crush on Christy almost like a highschool crush

  • @smonkey86 same

  • the chick looks like the 2nd boss from deus ex human revolution lol

  • i didnt know christie was so short..

  • this movie is amazing

  • OMG i LOVED the opening credits of the movie!!

  • I am really disappointed that they did not bother to see the original before reviewing the remake - especially as the original is just 2 years old and Fincher is really just re-using a lot of its scenes and cuts. Not very original at all IMHO...

  • I Loved this version. Its beautiful, it's hard to explain, it is just good. Movie follows the book more closely. Soundtrack awesome. Rooney Mara, a talented actress and shined in this movie.

  • Faces made for radio

  • My question remains, WHY? WHY, oh WHY? Is it just that we lazy american's cant be bothered with subtitles? And for the record Noomi Rapace is and will remain the only character capable of playing the true Lisbeth Salander.

  • These people are idiots. The ending was one of the best parts. The entire sequence were Lisbeth retransfers Wennerstroms savings as bonds into different accounts was fantastic alone, just genius editing there. And the very end is from the book. The only difference is in the book Lisbeth means to give Mikael an Elvis souvenir and not a leather jacket.

  • @KillSwitch2 The ending is from the book, but I still agree with Christy that it was still unsatisfying. I remember thinking in the theatre something like "oh it's not going to end here is it?" It felt like the film just fizzled out. I don't think the ending of the book lent itself to the big screen. I liked the ending of the swedish version better.

  • @Fangtorn

The Swedish version ending sucked. Not only was it not like how the book ended but it looked like they were trying to ape Anthony Hopkins final scene in 'Silence of the Lambs'.

  • @KillSwitch2 "Sucked" is a bit harsh. I liked watching Lisbeth stroll off into the sunset with her billions of kronor. I don't feel they ripped off Silence of the Lambs at all. It was visually similiar, but I wouldn't have made that comparison if you hadn't said.

As for like the book, at least in the swedish one Mikael goes to jail at some point, at least he goes to Australia, the flowers are explained, and it isn't just stated that Lisbeth tried to burn her father to death.

  • I do not think they are suggesting the victim is too blame, rather than she was strong enough to fight off a rapist, thats what I take from the review.

  • these reviewers seem pretty ignorant and stupid in all honesty

  • these old people piss me off, go make your own movie if you don't like it. This movie is brilliant, sure it won't be a classic but embrace it for what it is.

  • To those saying that this is a remake, you are wrong. It is an adaptation of the novels, just like the Swedish films were also adaptations. Fincher's adaptation is coming from the original source material (the novels). These are two separate adaptations. In other words, NOT A REMAKE.

  • You idiots....READ the book...don't like the ending?....go to the last page of the BOOK...the movie just tried to copy the book....shhheeesh....these clowns get PAID for this persiflage?

Don't see what all the fuss is about ...there's lots of Lisbeth lookalikes in SF and NYC.

Also Reznor's rip off of the Led Zep "Imigrant Song" is gimmicky...I expected more from the EX-rocker. Movie was good...just toooooo looooonnng!

  • @3117ss That first part was exactly what I were going to write.

  • I didn't find the ending to be unsatisfying at all, instead it was an improvement. It shows the vulnerability of Lisbeth.

  • I hate what the flick.

  • breaking no new ground perhaps, but that begining sequence was brilliant!!

  • the girl with the dragon tatoo was disapoiting not good but rooney mara a star.

  • Obviously it is a well crafted movie, which is to be expected from Fincher, but i can't help thinking why on earth a good movie of recent times had to be remade in the first place? Was it really that necessary?

  • the lady reviewer is so sexy

  • Creepy Eerie , and alot of twists , I thought it was great

  • I don't know how this movie avoided an NC17 rating.

I thought it was a pretty good movie.

Soundtrack by Trent Reznor was a bonus!

  • whomever is producing this, should serious re-consider having you all sit for the reviews. standing is unnecessary.

  • daniel craig first good film since road to perdiction he ended his slump and fincher should stick to great 70 style films lik the game and zodiac there brillant,

  • my favourite david fincher film is a masterpiece with michael douglas the game.

  • david fisher great director and rooney mara is hot and a upcoming brillant actress i knew she be in a good film after crap remake of nighmare on elm street.

  • I hope this is not too different from the original foriegn film

  • Love short women. ;-)

  • I find it a little unnerving that you all fail to discuss how this "remake" was from 2009. Don't you think there's an issue that Hollywood finds it necessary to redo a brilliant moving made 2 years ago? I am not seeing this moving on principle. I love this review show but ignoring how pathetic this remake make the US look is sad. Oh no SUBTITLES, how can we watch a movie with subtitles...

  • @macintoshbruno I agree this was a pointless movie.

  • @macintoshbruno This wasn't a remake. This was an independent adaptation of the novels. Why can't we just enjoy both versions?

  • "there was a book".., Great movie critics(no surprice), the books have only been a bestseller all over the world..

  • @freshhug hard to believe you couldn't catch the sarcasm :). Unless you were too

  • @brasiliansoxfan

    unless "I where too" what?

  • I loved the last scene, I really dislike neat packaged endings and sentiments, life never has endings just long mid sections we call endings.

    Go Kings!!!!

  • I really don't see what Alonso is failing to see. She gets victimized because she didn't see it coming. She outright says as much afterwards.

  • what the fuck whattheflick? why now? this movie is like 2 years old.

  • @crackerz99 welcome to the world of reboots, remakes and milking to death of existing franchises.

  • @birthdaynick80 I'm just waiting for the remakes of Harry Potter or the LOTR movies... after all, it's high time those ancient relics get thrown out and replaced! lol

  • @OcularPolitics instead of sequels they should just remake the same movie over and over again

    *coughhangovercough*

    damn this nasty cough!

  • @birthdaynick80 ya, i know fincher and chris nolan should go jump in a god damned hole and die. god nolan with his bullshit batman films, and fincher with his adaptations. these guys are 2 of the most popular directors, but they can't stop doing bullshit franchises and adaptations for the llife of them. nolan go to hell/ fincher-i am goinna give you one more chance since you made fight club.

  • @malows1234 well Nolan is out after the next batman movie, but you must at least acknowledge The Prestige, Memento and Inception... but the regurgitated stuff should just go straight to blueray

  • @birthdaynick80 i will certianly acknowledge memento and following for their radical originality and those are TRUE chris nolan films. inception and the batman movies are just sad pathetic excuse to make money for a filmmaker of his calibur. i mean god damn, let the cameron's and michael bays handle that shit. nolan could be doing way better things. but i geuss nolan is having trouble turning down the space mansions that warner brothers is offering him, watevahhhhh.

  • Who says that you have to fit into either the victim box OR the bad-ass box? The very fact that some of the reviewers here are confused about that legitimizes the need for Lisbeth's story to be told. Even superheroes have vices, "weaknesses" or something about them that makes them less god-like and more human-like (and, thus, relatable). That being said, I am disappointed to hear that a rape scene was included in this film. I hope it enhances the story rather than sensationalizes it.

  • @XauroraOborealisX The rape is pretty essential to all versions of the story and it also resonates for the last two parts of the series. I do agree that I found the reviewers confusion about how someone that tough could also be a victim of violence shows the need for this story to be told. I got kind of a "blame the victim" vibe from the review.

  • @charlottewaldo Yes, I understand that the rape is central to the storyline but I have a problem with movies showing the actual event (most tend to fetishize rape or make it "sexy" in doing so, though admittedly not ALL do). I respect directors who know how to imply it or who only show non-visual aspects (i.e., sound). I haven't seen this film so I don't know how it was handled, but I am always a bit cautious when I hear about this. They seem to imply that you see it?

  • @XauroraOborealisX Really late here.Yes, I did see it. I saw both films actually. I must admit I turned my head away for most of it. I didn't find it at all sexy or fetishistic. It was brutal, as it was intended to be.

  • @XauroraOborealisX You do see the rape scene. It's not fetishy or sexy in any way. It is brutal and disturbing as it's supposed to be. This is not a PG-13 movie at all. It contains nudity and sex and violence, and is presented in an adult way. I would not see it with children. But it is definitely worth seeing if you are tired of the typical sanitized action hero Hollywood drivel.

  • @charlottewaldo To your other point, I did not pick up on a blame-the-victim vibe but in thinking about it, I can see how one might. I attributed the comment to a mere preference of cookie cutter, stereotypical characters that "make sense" (which I find odd for a movie reviewer to prefer). I am glad the character is getting a confused reaction, though, because it legitimizes the need for more REAL characters.

  • @charlottewaldo I thought it was pretty fucking stupid of them to think that she's some sort of Superhero with superhuman strength, Dude she gets caught by surprise by a fuckin GIANT fat man three times her size, of course she's going to loose that battle....

  • @charlottewaldo a bit late reply, but that is so true.

No matter how strong you are as a person, a series of unfortunate events can make you a victim (economically, socially, or physically).

There are even predators (in any of the senses mentioned before) out there who enjoy targeting strong and confident individuals because of the challenge and experienced power.

It's how you deal with being victimized that shows truely how strong you are as a person.

    I find Lisbeth believable.

  • @gulllars

That big guy on the left hasn't a clue what he's talking about.

Lisbeth sets herself up to film herself giving Welfare Boy a blow job - but, before she knows it, she's handcuffed and completely helpless. If it wasn't for that, she could have beaten the crap out of him.

I see nothing inconsistent with the Salander character just because she got a bad break.

  • @jazzx251 so, i guess you're agreeing with me then, but your comment doesn't sound like it in tone... I'm confused.

  • @charlottewaldo Yeah I wondered what that was all about. I saw the swedish original and it made perfect sense. She's got a tough attitude BECAUSE she's victimized, not in spite of. Don't know how some reviewers get confused by this.

  • @modplugrad Totally agree with you here.

  • Yeah... What are books?

  • christy is ike 4'9, DAMN !

  • go and watch the Swedish one.first

  • Comment removed

  • Cristy i think i love you :3

  • i don't know who they are. Ben Yes

  • BEN SAW A MOVIE!!???? NO way!

  • @continuingevolution No. not really but i see where your coming from. Sometimes it's hard for me to agree with them on some reviews but then I understand that that is there opinion and I cant possibly change that even if I try bashing them over the net, and it's there job to review movies and write columns about it because they are part of journalism, because if know one thing about hipsters they are fucking clueless and oblivious to anything that is given to them.

  • everyone read the book

  • I actually really liked the ending. I felt that the last shot of the film had more emotional weight than anything in the origin al trilogy (which I loved) or the rest of this movie.

  • @onepiecefan74 I did too. It was like a sucker punch, and I really felt for Lisbeth in the last scene.

  • he didnt like dark knight?

  • @alexd765 Dark Knight was well acted, looked beautiful, etc. But some people like myself hate it when the villain is plotting ahead to steps he could never see.

  • @alexd765 In fact, look up 'a 20 minute breakdown of why the chase scene in The Dark Knight made no sense'

  • In the original movie and book she's not "Laura Croft"--does this movie make her Laura Croft?

  • Saw this movie yesterday and i love it!

  • Led Zeppelin!!!

  • i like stuff too

  • Sorry but there isn't any piano from Closer on the soundtrack. If anything, Matt needs to "Come on". Sure there is piano and Trent Reznor is playing, doesn't mean everything leads to Closer. Listen to it again Matt then listen to Closer.

  • The two older men were making some legitimate points, and then Ben and Christy undermine them with jokes and an "I liked it therefore no criticism is legitimate" mentality.

  • anyone else getting sick of what the flick. I mean they don't really like much. It's like watching a bunch of hipsters standing around trying to show that they are overly smart.

  • Why does Rooney Mara have that stupid accent?

  • And let me guess, I havent seen the hollywood verison, but the murderer is Stellan Skarsgård.

  • @Auraruth8 Will you be upset if I tell you yes?

  • @Alex703rockstar No Im actually looking forward to the movie anyway, It will be interesting to see the remake of a masterpeace, and I like the second movies more than the first wich seems to be a minority opinion...again. =)

  • Christy Lemire wrong again: IT IS A REMAKE and watch the swedish version of the movies, their awsome.

  • The first Swedish film was pretty good, but the second two were a bit so so- but made better by Noomi Rapace's presence. I get why people bitch about the US incessantly having to 'remake' non US films or tv shows. It get's annoying after a while- particularly if the original was much better; I mean did the US really have to remake The Killing (Forbrydelsen) when the Danish original was so suberb & better? However it's not a remake if your adapting from a book & we are talking David Fincher here.

  • i wanna see Christy's box....

  • The movie will be released in my country by the end of January, DAMN IT!

  • that one guy is such a fag

  • Why was there a remake so soon after the original?

Watch the original, folks, it's really good.

  • Christy Lemire is still the only good whattheflickshow reviewer.

  • Great review- sometimes you guys have a great back and forth discussion, this was one of them.

The Immigrant Song! I generally don't like Zeppelin remakes, but this one sounded awesome from the trailer- and perfect for the movie.

  • how does happen that americans always fuck and trash all good foreigners movies... Occupy the cinemas sounds a good shit in times like this, fuck this shit and watch the original...

  • @fusor010 Not many people enjoy watching 2 1/2 hours of subtitles.
