  • This is true now I was 17 then though my waistline is still the same, I find the time has gone too fast, I used to laugh at the old guys as well, the music industry seems too serious these days

  • The ultimate growing old video RIP Fred Thanks Mate!!

  • I love his accent. I remember this in 1981. I was almost 17, and couldn't imagine what it would be like to ever be this old. We used to sing it to my Dad, taking the piss... Oh, where do the years go ? Now I'm the one zipping up the jeans, and the belly's in the way... And, horror of horrors, I have Vick in the medicine cabinet !!!

  • Not heard this for 30 years.....AS every one else say...OMG where have the years gone !!

  • Fred was one of very few real folk heroes. Around the time this single came out he was getting about a grand for every venue he played.

He was asked to play a pub in Poole in dorset near where i live, when he found out that it was a proper folkers pub he immeadiately agreed to do it for 200 quid for travelling and free beer.

Thats the kind of man he was, a man who loved music more than anything else. I wish id got to meet him more than once. Me and my dad still play the folker in his memory

  • I think it's time I commited suicide .

  • I wish TOTP was still like this! Perhaps it wouldn't have been cancelled.

  • blowining me dear old mums mind findin all theses old tracks she did catch me out once or twice but she got the name wrong thanks for posting has perkerd her right up shes 82

  • RIP Fred - 2010

  • Absolutely gutted. I didn't realise until a few minutes ago Fred had died.

    R.I.P Fred.

  • ANIMEAL69. Know what you mean. Fred was brilliant. Love swinging, best free fun in world. Next to the wurzels and the scotish wurzel lives in priorswood Taunton. Go to post office in priorswood and meet him. X

  • welcome to leicester city football club sven

  • lovely song :) feel good song..

  • Yes, clever, sad, funny, though slightly cringeworthy lyrics. The last 3 verses really date the song, though!

  • By far his worst song. That makes him a comic genius in my book. A Fred Wedlock gig was The first live show I ever went to!

    Lovely feller too.

  • I feel ashamed to say that, despite being Fred's godson, I had no idea he had been on TOTP. Fantastic news! If only to highlight my ignorance...

A salute to the oldest swinger, you will be sorely missed.

  • LOL used to hear this on the radio all the time.

  • RIP.

  • "It takes you all night, to do what you used to do all night" Great line!! RIP Fred.

  • R.I.P. Fred thanks for all the laughs

  • @glenmere Amen to that man! And now its happening to me...

God bless ya Fred, keep `em laughing upstairs!

  • RIP Fred and thanks for all you did for Bristol

  • Rest in Peace Fred. You're still my favourite comedy folk singer. I'll have a Cider or two for you. I never got to see you live although I would have loved to. I still fondly remember the note you enclosed with the set of CDs I bought from you and how you thought your wife would squander the money on bread and coal! Sleep well Fred, you're always going to be a legend to me. I stumbled across your music when looking through my father's old LPs and your songs never fail to brighten up my day.

  • RIP Fred you are a LEGEND!!!!

  • aww r fred. r,ip r kid

  • R.I.P. Fred :(

  • RIP Fred. I saw him live in a pub in Minehead, Somerset in 2003 and he sang this. What a brilliant afternoon's entertainment. Thank you, Fred.

  • Rest in peace, a west country legend.

  • i was due to meet this very man on 6th febuary at my grandad's 70th birthday but due to general health, my meeting was cut short. RIP Fred.

  • R.I.P Fred

  • great fun! saw fred perform in a pub in bristol some years ago and have had contact with him since regarding this song. He's a nice friendly person. I now perform it to family and friends when I've a few jars of thatchers on board, well it sounds good to me anyway...........

  • many many thanks Mr. Hart at RPH for reminding me of this one!! that really was funny

  • When walking into a disco [or whetever it's called these days] I AM offered a seat.

The 'music' is too-loud & I suspect I went to school with her ma & pa...

NOT using Vic yet so still in-with-a-chance.

  • funny, funny, funny, all too true when you get old too haha

  • Ha, Oldest Swinger at No. 2, Shaddap You Face at No. 1. The music may not have been fantastic, but at least people had a sense of humour in 1981! ;-)

  • this man is related to me :)

  • Even this was slightly better than that bloody shut up your face which I couldnt stand!

  • My Primary School Teacher, Ed Pickford wrote this song. I was in his class in 1981 when this was in the charts. Incindetially kept of the Number 1 spot by Joe dolce and his "ShaddUpa ya Face"

  • Who on earth bought this song???

  • God Knows!!!!!!

  • me for my dad thought it was funny my dad didn't oh well

  • Fantastic lyrics! Sadly very true!! LOL!!

  • Good posting. although i slightly prefer Freds other TOTP performance where he had the ladies of legs & co dancing round him. Bet he enjoyed that!!

  • Oh God... I was 24 when this came out and laughed my socks off at the poor old guys.

Now I'm 51 and its HAPPENING!!

  • Teebee - LOL! you can stop it. Get hold of yourself man. You must not be a Fred Wedlock clische....

  • Trust me.... being 51 aint so bad!

But it DOES take you all night to what you used to do all night :(

  • @teebee17 I know what you mean - I was a little older than you when it came out but I also laughed at it - well we all make mistakes eh!

    Damm funny

  • @teebee17 I was 11 - seems the sentiment of this song catches up with us all! ;-0)

  • I play this at birthday parties - is Fred wearin' a wig or a mop-head ?

  • Real hair. I've met him on several occasions.

  • I have the original album, personally autographed by Fred himself as well as Chris Newman. Should I put it on eBay?

  • I wouldn't bother, mate

  • Dammit! Looks like I'm destined to keep it the rest of my life!

  • I'll bid a quid!

I saw him about a dozen times (including a Knebworth rock festival once, I think). Still got a tape of his stuff in the car, and my kids are word perfect.

  • Just a quid? Moving in the right direction, though.

  • brilliant been lookin for this for ages
