This is true now I was 17 then though my waistline is still the same, I find the time has gone too fast, I used to laugh at the old guys as well, the music industry seems too serious these days
I love his accent. I remember this in 1981. I was almost 17, and couldn't imagine what it would be like to ever be this old. We used to sing it to my Dad, taking the piss... Oh, where do the years go ? Now I'm the one zipping up the jeans, and the belly's in the way... And, horror of horrors, I have Vick in the medicine cabinet !!!
Fred was one of very few real folk heroes. Around the time this single came out he was getting about a grand for every venue he played.
He was asked to play a pub in Poole in dorset near where i live, when he found out that it was a proper folkers pub he immeadiately agreed to do it for 200 quid for travelling and free beer.
Thats the kind of man he was, a man who loved music more than anything else. I wish id got to meet him more than once. Me and my dad still play the folker in his memory
blowining me dear old mums mind findin all theses old tracks she did catch me out once or twice but she got the name wrong thanks for posting has perkerd her right up shes 82
ANIMEAL69. Know what you mean. Fred was brilliant. Love swinging, best free fun in world. Next to the wurzels and the scotish wurzel lives in priorswood Taunton. Go to post office in priorswood and meet him. X
Rest in Peace Fred. You're still my favourite comedy folk singer. I'll have a Cider or two for you. I never got to see you live although I would have loved to. I still fondly remember the note you enclosed with the set of CDs I bought from you and how you thought your wife would squander the money on bread and coal! Sleep well Fred, you're always going to be a legend to me. I stumbled across your music when looking through my father's old LPs and your songs never fail to brighten up my day.
great fun! saw fred perform in a pub in bristol some years ago and have had contact with him since regarding this song. He's a nice friendly person. I now perform it to family and friends when I've a few jars of thatchers on board, well it sounds good to me anyway...........
My Primary School Teacher, Ed Pickford wrote this song. I was in his class in 1981 when this was in the charts. Incindetially kept of the Number 1 spot by Joe dolce and his "ShaddUpa ya Face"
I saw him about a dozen times (including a Knebworth rock festival once, I think). Still got a tape of his stuff in the car, and my kids are word perfect.

Yes, clever, sad, funny, though slightly cringeworthy lyrics. The last 3 verses really date the song, though!
eisemanrenyardjake 1 year ago
By far his worst song. That makes him a comic genius in my book. A Fred Wedlock gig was The first live show I ever went to!
Lovely feller too.

I feel ashamed to say that, despite being Fred's godson, I had no idea he had been on TOTP. Fantastic news! If only to highlight my ignorance...
A salute to the oldest swinger, you will be sorely missed.

When walking into a disco [or whetever it's called these days] I AM offered a seat.
The 'music' is too-loud & I suspect I went to school with her ma & pa...
NOT using Vic yet so still in-with-a-chance.

Ha, Oldest Swinger at No. 2, Shaddap You Face at No. 1. The music may not have been fantastic, but at least people had a sense of humour in 1981! ;-)
