  • At their mid 90's peak, saw them a few times around this then. Most memorably supporting Pulp at Brixton Academy, also when baked on weed (maybe not the best idea!) at the much missed Old Trout in Windsor.

Speaking of much missed, RIP Mary Hansen.

  • Simple yet beautiful & sticks in your head for agez

  • worst fucking pants of all time

  • Nice thats all

  • Fantastic thats all !!

  • Awsome dowsome

  • There are @ least 3 people on this planet who do not deserve to draw another breath. Stupid YouTube fools. That is all.

  • ..."Ok, now we can fight." Classic.

OH CRAP! That IS Sonic Boom back there! COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!

  • ..."Ok, now we can fight." Classic.

  • OMG Sonic Boom (peter kember) in the back !!

  • This is soo cool !

  • its Sonic Boom in the back!

  • @KingSandwell holy fuck it is

  • Why are they so serious? Let's not try to fight with anyone right now, I'm not getting paid to stand up for them.

  • una d mis canciones favoritas.q bueno ver a Mary Hansen ahi.

  • Mary Hansen absurd death...killed by a fucking lorry... riding her bicycle...Rest In Peace...

  • @MrFob007

Death by motor vehicle is the most absurd of deaths. Ask Al. ;)

  • Mary Hansen absurd death...killed by a fucking lorry... riding her bicycle...Rest In Peace...

  • I well prefer this live version of the song as opposed to the studio version, just shows how tight and how talented the musicians are in the band, SUPERB!!!!

  • R.I.P Mary Hansen your talent is sorely missed.

  • Excellente !! : )

  • I look like the girl in the white sweater, singing..but blonde,,

    ;0

  • This is boring or is sublime, one can sleep or you can wake up smiling in a bad dream with this music, the staging comes to the simplicity of being at the limit of the tedious, but those beautiful voices save the complete performance. Anyway it is not music to ears clumsy.

  • @PATAGONIALOOP you speak English, and poitely?

Are you trying to get a girlfriend from England now...?

  • Some of the sounds seem to come straight off of Ambient 4: On Land. Subtle.

  • I feel kinda bad for saying this, but Morgane looks eerily similar to Chris Crocker in this video. Immensely fantastic song otherwise!

  • is that SONIC BOOM back there?

  • @YourHearse I thought so too. It is the set-up with which he performed as EAR.

  • My first introduction to the 'Lab was seeing the 'Later' dvd with this song about 5 years ago and they were so kooky both visually and soundwise that they rested in a corner of my brain. Later I came across the ABC Sessions CD but it kind of rested in my collection unloved and ignored. Then one day - BANG! I GOT them> A hugely rewarding musical journey commenced and is still continuing.....;Still haven't heard their earlier stuff - I'm going at them in reverse! A FUCKING GREAT GREAT BAND.

  • @MrCeapari My journey with Stereolab was very similar. I had a friend who worked for a college radio station and they loaned me an advanced copy of Random Transient Noise Bursts with Announcements. It just didn't click with me and I only listened to it twice. But about a year later I kept having bits of a song go through my head and I couldn't place it. I went to Lollapalooza and Stereolab was on the second stage playing Jenny Ondioline and I was drawn in. It took me a year, but I got it.

  • Trippy!

  • does anyone know the notes for sudden stars on piano

    thanks

  • One of the best groups ever! So influential, yet I feel they are under-acknowledged. Lord knows they're better than 90% of the electronic indie-ish groups playing now

  • make that 100%!

  • yes sonic boom! how amazing is that.

  • Jeeeeziz they are tight!! The band...not Laetitia's granny pants

  • wow, this is a thousand times better than the studio version

  • @spooky692 The version on ABC music is great too... it has an extended intro and is about 8 minutes long.

  • Saw them on this tour here in TX. OSSOM! Still talk about it!

  • Saw this when originally broadcast in '96. Queued at the door of John Menzies (!) the next day to buy Emperor Tomato Ketchup before I departed on holiday 2 hours later. Quite simply pop genius.

  • Great song. Great performance. But man, those trousers!

  • anyone who can still look good in pants like that and rock out like this at the same time--- NO WONDER an entire generation of indie rockers fell in love with Laetitia!!!!!

  • La!!!

    That's me!!!!

    Laetitia, SWOOOON!!!!!

  • There Cool,

  • You're damn tootin' it's a good song. I still love Laetitia even with her jacked up granny pants (trousers) though.

  • Stereolab are 'too cool' LIVE - Love them!!!! xxxxx

  • Great preformance, I can't see why people want to argue like children when music like this is playing. Youtube forever confuses me!

  • always in my heart

  • RIP Mary Hansen.

  • woops, i accidently thumbs downed this. :/

  • Ok kids - lets just enjoy the music.

  • great song! See Sonic Boom playing synthetizers

  • Bands like Stereolab appeal to people who long for Utopian societies while using music to appeal to your sense of freedom and youth. They try to proclaim in this song that there are two sides fighting and the nature of fighting or having to take "sides" is "not correct" as the song says. As much as people idolize musicians and even shape their clothing, political views, etc. on them, are you really that subordinate to musicians to believe this? Think for yourself, your idols are HUMAN like you.

  • well said ,, great tune though

  • Yeah, I took psych 101 when I was young too

  • Yeah, I stopped using copy/paste I have no brain of my own comments when I was 8 years old. Really original there, I feel EXPOSED!!! :P

  • The truth is is that not only is what I said true about the fan side, but even the band side would say that that was who they were trying (loosely used) to appeal to, It's not some huge revelation. Stereolab has always been a band who included social and political commentary in their lyrics which at its heart had exactly what I said. I love Streolabs' music, they are in my top 5 all time bands, but that doesn't mean everything I say about them has to appeal to people like you.

  • Wow, I relly hit a nerve there. Try not to lose any sleep.

  • Once again, no real intelligent comment. Your a mush brained moron. You really have nothing to say right? I mean you actually have nothing to say, and so therefore intelligent people offend you. You wish everyone would just be as dumb as you. No debate, no dialogue, because honestly you have NOTHING to say. You can't even spell really with spell check provided. Go watch prime time and eat some snacks, repeat daily until you die, your future in one sentence. :D

  • You spell check your youtube posts? You are more of a pseudointellectual than I originally thought. By the way, it should be "you are a mush brained moron" or informally "you're a mush brained moron". "Your" is possessive.

  • Well at least you said something! I won't bother you anymore seeing as it's clear that people who have their own point of view clearly bother you and you wish that they would just shut up. So for the sake of not wasting my time, and not wanting to interrupt your time ( seeing that prime time is approaching, and I'm sure your getting your snacks ready) anymore. By the way all youtube posts have automatic spell check.

  • stellar

  • RIP Mary

  • Point of entry for many of us to groop,I'm sure...and to falling in love with Laetitia too.

  • they are spiritually and intellectually hot

that's what makes it so special

  • the blond girl is sexy. it's too bad she was kicked out of the band.

  • i think the three girls look hot

  • I've loved this song since it's been out but the lead singer mutilated it live. And damn, what's with her outfit? It looks like she just finished an 8-hour day at a meaningless desk job.... frumparama!!

  • I think she looks hot.

  • She sounded great when I saw them this year. And for the record some people dig the 'plain' look.

  • ha ha. she did dress like a secretary.

  • That guy in the back with sunglases, could it by any chance be Sonic Boom from the "spacemen3".

Looks like kind of the kind of equipment he uses too.

  • indeed it is! he has always been a fan of them me thinks!

  • yep. i've seen sonic boom live some weeks ago (amazing: with band!) their first song was written by stereolab...

  • This is an awesome song, but the girl with the tambourine creeps me out.

  • The guitar sounds like german group by 70´s Neu!

  • Yeah, Sterolab sound a lot like Neu! Eespecially in their early years.

    I LOVE STEREOLAB!!!!!

  • good for you.i agree.love the enthusiasm.i reckon selected noisebursts with anouncments is the best album....

  • they are great, a perfect sound!

  • I must have been one of many who fell in love with this sound when I watched this back in 96...been in love with Stereolab ever since. Precious. And the band sound truly wonderful here too.

  • The most interesting and sublime sonique in the world? Here is the answer!

  • hey cocteau lab, did u know that stereolab opened up for the cocteaus in '94.

  • Thank god for Sonic Boom, the devil of the synthpop. Great oscillations..

    signed

    The baseball furies

  • hell yeah work that pin matrix , pete..

  • I saw them on this tour, it's a shame Katherine Gifford left. I remember Sonic Boom in the corner adding random chaos to the mix until his tone generator packed up!

  • you go in that team i go on this team divide everything a flag or a number make 'em opposites so there's a reason stigmatisation ok now we can fight divide everything just put it all flat justification ok now you can fight Poignant. Chic. Cool. Wonderful.
  • genial !!!

  • MOOG = :~)

  • Laetitia is so damn cool.

  • Yes miss Mary...but they carry on. Cheers!

  • There's that Spacemen 3 guy too - Sonic Boom (the dude in sunglasses behind Morgane Lhote). :D

  • Wonderful Stereolab!

  • occasionally i forget just how amazing stereoloab really are....thanks for reminding me.

  • The bassist is a genius...

  • Beautiful music

  • One of their best.

  • PERFECT POP! this record will always bring me back to a very happy time..

    BRILLIANT!

  • Wonderful stuff from the 'Lab,Tim Ganes' guitar playing very borrowed from Can circa 'Future Days'....superb!

  • fantastic!

  • check out my version of baby lulu

called baby sulu on my page

  • .....such brilliant music!! I love Stereolab so much!

  • I see they are joined on stage by Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3, E.A.R., and Spectrum fame.

  • What a beautiful set too.

This album is so wonderfully trippy!

  • Stereolab was the best concert I've ever been to. They're just the best live.

  • HAL9000: "Scram jets are on!"

  • I miss stereo lab...

  • great camerawork - how did they do that? One of the - if not the - best postmodern bands

  • Rockin!

  • I remember when I first heard this song it was almost too intense for me.

  • i can still remember reading the article on gulf news( a dubai daily)about a freak accident involving a singer who was run over .i was listening to emperor tomato ketchup earlier..

  • mary hansen rest in peace

  • still get a little weepy sometimes when i see this video. had to leave work early the day i heard of her death. the flugelhorn is not a replacement for her voice live. hated hearing it instead of her voice last time they came through town.

  • dammit mary, I miss you

  • one of my favorite bands. the gentleman in the way back on synth is sonic boom from spacemen 3. mary was amazing and we miss her. laetitia is awesome, but is so awkward with her hands when not playing an instrument. saw them on this tour in 96 and again in 01. love it.

  • oh yeah your right!!! I didn't reconize him, awsome

  • Me encanta el estilo, su sencillez...

    G E N I A L, Escuchen Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements....

  • One of those extra keyboard guys is playing a Rhodes, but I can't hear it at all...

  • listen at about 2:50 it's quite clear

  • mary has the most amazing voice. Its just like the recording.

  • They were good last year when I saw them with Jim O'Rourke, but they were better ten years ago when I saw them with Mary. R.I.P.

  • Laetitia...

  • I love you Laetita!!!

  • the girl in the green dress

  • wich one is mary?

  • tambourine

  • Wonderfull band, beautiful song and very atractive singer!!

  • Great!. Nice song

  • Fantastic!! Thanks so much for posting this.

  • Excellent.

  • i'm starting to cry. i miss mary so much :< she was vital to the band. wish they would at least get someone to replace her, though it would be a tough task

  • Wonderful stuff.

  • remember watching jools holland that night . falling for songs and mary , she was like a girl i used to cop for in a club in warrington called legends

  • Just love this live version-much "funkier" than Emperor Tomato version.Think that is due to the insistent guitars.Remember watching this in early 97.I fell in love with the music and Laetitia simultaneously...

  • Yes she is quite captivating, she is like a child in her disposition yet frighteningly intelligent. I always smile when I see her having fun.

  • Agree. Didn't agree with your earlier comments though.Still, that's healthy no? Justification? Don't think now you just fight! Apologies...

  • OMFG, stereolab did jools holland! fuck yeah!

  • Brilliant...Love that Sonic Boom is in on this...

  • Im in love with the tambourine player ,she reminds me of my mother (which died 14 years ago )....just a beatifull woman...

  • Sorry to break the news, but she was killed in a traffic accident in late 2002.

  • Yep...a great loss...

damn, stereloab has never been the same again.

  • Her name is Mary Hansen. She'll always be remembered. Indeed, Stereolab has never been the same again.

    Awesome!!!

    Domo Arigato.
