When their career is finally over, U2 will not only leave behind one of the biggest footprints in the history of rock, they'll leave behind one of the biggest footprints in the history of music. Their 'competition' isn't just rock legends like The Beatles, Elvis, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones-- it's people like Mozart, Beethoven, Duke Ellington, and George Gershwin. Anyone who doesn't understand this needs to listen to U2's ENTIRE catalog, which rivals anyone's-- EVER.
Such a brilliant brilliant song, just so far ahead of all the young pretenders and the cynical critics who are out of breath trying to dismiss U2 as being no longer relevant, and whom I say to - suck this masterpiece with your last breath into your ear canals and DIE... ;).
I'm saddened by all the comments on this vid, most of them are missing the point and message of U2 and this song. Leave the baggage at the door and ignore the comments bar. Just relax and listen to the music. You may gleam something out of it. = )
Flavia, I remember you every single time I hear this song. Don't know even why I'm writing this... you've really made a permanent statement in my life. Thank you very much for crossing my path.
Muy buena rola de U2, para todos los que alguna vez perdimos la esperanza por las drogas o adicciones....Vámos! el cambio de conciencia esta cerca....Saludos desde Guatemala!
I like this song because of its deep meaning, it's great listening to this while you're layed down on the bed, it makes me feel so strong and starts the fire to go on with my life
the altar of the dark star the moment of surrender speeding on the subway through the stations of the cross pray for the ones you love suffering w/addiction this song assures me that there are people who have compasion for those of us who are struggling and that our familys havent given up completely thank u god for u2 in their life stories they have given me a little steam the fuel to push on thru this moment of doubt peace be with you all and forgive my spelling grammyG
@chefaaron100 im prayin someone understands i was weepin tryin to peice it together when i heard this on the album and liberated and free to show my emotion , shame, hope& prayer of surrender i would love to hear back from you folks so we can support ONE another
@chefaaron100 i agree ...surrendering to god .. we all have a story we all been on the dark side.. some still are . thru my own expierance prayer was the answer for me . when i threw in the bloody towel and wept as i asked god to remove my addictions life began to unfold. u2 has been such a lift in my life .. one .
I have to listened to U2 for 30 years and they have brought up every emotion. I have to stay away for a while and dont go for the superhits. I love this song because it is not a popular hit and means something personal for me.Mellow and techinically brilliant. I am a great fan but even a stonger critic and to get this reaction makes them brilliant.
This song doesnt deserve to be called the 160th best song of all time by Rolling Stone. Let's be honest people, the only reason is was is because its U2! Its An Average song...ehhh i give it a 7. (:
This song is so awesome, yet so many ageist naysayers try to write U2 off as has-beens, this is proof positive that U2 are still experimental cutting-edge innovators with a peerless pedigree that the likes of Coldplay still follow around like mongrel dogs sniffing for inspiration.
@Kenmorfdublin I'd just like to point out that producer Brian Eno is behind a lot of the experimental side of U2. It's no coincidence that he also works with Coldplay. Maybe it's Brian Eno's influence on both bands that has drawn your conclusion :)
@jimmy54o Eno only produced one Coldplay album if I'm not mistaken at the time of typing, so I think it's more a case of Coldplay following U2 VIA Eno around for inspiration then perhaps.
Chris Martin is a self confessed huge U2 fan since he was a kid, and they've been called the best U2 tribute band in the world, but I think that's unfair, some of their music is truly brilliant, unique and inspiring in it's own right.
also, if you're really foolish enough to react like that to my comment, go ahead and read the top rated comments to just about any coldplay song. you'll see there's some definite raging and crying for you to do there.
@Blashbuck Btw, this song is horribly overrated. I just hate it when people like you whore for thumbs in the comments. Do you have nothing going on in your life? Kinda sad.
@Blashbuck They performed this song in memory of him. It's pretty obvious. I moan because I'm tired of people like you attention seeking over the internet on shite music on youtube. Please, just stop. You're an irritation to anyone with intelligence.
I'm laughing because you assume you know more about this than i do. You don't. You're just begging for attention by trolling on a song you say is crap. You still haven't explained why you came to this page in the first place.
Calm down, and go live your life. You can't win this.
@Blashbuck I came here because I saw it on the Rolling Stone 500 list and I played it to see if it had improved since last time I heard it. It's still boring pish. If this was released by any other band, people would say it was crap, overly long and mundane. I'm begging for attention? Haha, seriously, go do something with your life. Why don't you beg for thumbs up from passers by? I bet you would love that.
ok. obviously, you're not getting a thing i'm saying. have fun making up lies from comments near the top of the page and trolling for your own amusement. I'll go do something remotely useful.
i like how all of your replies are nothing but "NO U" responses. And find out for yourself. we all know you need that information asap. why don't you be useful and tell me why you haven't seen all the other millions of comments everywhere on youtube that are all seeking thumbs up?
@Blashbuck Um...this is awkward. My last message was intended for you not to reply too. I'm bored of you. Can't you see that? Now please, go to school or something. Contribute to society. Become a doctor. Just do me a favour and when you successfully diagnose someone, don't ask for their thumbs up. It's inappropriate rather like what you did in this video. Goodbye and good luck in your recovery. x
you're not good at answering questions. why don't you do YOURself a favor and calm down before your next response. Everyone asks for thumbs up dude. sorry, it's true, and if you haven't noticed, then you're way behind. i don't care if you respond or not, i just want you to know that.
this just keeps getting better and better. you moved the conversation away from what it was supposed to be, plus you said you were "bored of me" like 3 comments ago. guess not. you really do care about me don't you?
The black holes and dark star may symbolize the bad situations our bad choices led us into. Once we hit rock bottom, there is a part us desperately wanting to fight our way back to the way things used to be, when life was fine and dandy. Sadly, scars become deeply rooted in our psyche. And there is no way out...unless we actually let Christ, the Logos and full embodiment of God, restore us. The moment of surrender before God's throne is the freedom we are all yearning for. "
This is in my top ten favorite U2 songs; next to "Bad," it's their most underrated tune. To me, this song is more tragic than "One" or "With Or Without You."
@stromssa I like your visual communication of this song. It`s not often I see somone interpret texts as precisley as you do here. This description indicates the group`s values and concern for other people as well.. U2 has been my number one ..for years...but this album has a touch of something special...Oh yes...It sure is Magnificent.
The longevity of U2 is just outstanding. My dad's followed them since the 1980s, and I've been a fan since the early 2000s. They've explored so many genres, excelled in so many ways, but underneath it all they're true artists and masters of their craft.
This is another classic that shows just how U2 can bridge decades and generations without ever losing sight of themselves.
I've been in every dark hole....at the alter of the dark star. Who writes stuff like this anymore? This is a true classic that didn't get any airplay because of the lenght of the song. FM radio sucks now because all they want is 2 1/2 minute crap pop songs on it. Back in the day WBCN in Boston would have dedicated a full night to play this album. I miss the old days when music was something you listened to and not some crap promoted on MTV. Of course I bought the CD. :o)
I tied myself with wire To let the horses run free Playing with the fire Until the fire played with me The stone was semi precious We were barely conscious Two souls too smart to be In the realm of certainty Even on our wedding day We set ourselves on fire A girl could not deny her Its not if I believe in love If love believes in me Oh believe in me At the moment of surrender I'm falling to my knees I did not notice the passers by And they did not notice me

Great verses, average chorus....some weak lyrics. Disappointing album.

@arniemazmax Those verses are powerful. Some of Bono's singing reminds me of Jon Crosby's. Funny, 'cause it's always been the other way around.
