This for me is a good drill to practice as in reality you will not generally swing naturally like this, people who swing over the top need an exaggerated sense of being inside when practising
When trying to cure my over the top swing, should I feel like my lower body (my hips) are facing where my shoulders are? Then do I have a feeling of pulling down on the club?
cont.. now I tend to 'cast' the club head and pull the ball low and left, so much so the driver stays in the bag. Your video has reminded me what I should be doing!!! P.S. its only driver, tempo seems to leave me and confidence also, any tips for the OTT driver?
This video does help! I get too fast with the big stick and hit flat left hooky drives, have done since lower back pain. I used to coil by keeping the club in front of me during take away, my left arm only crossed my chest when full shoulder turn completed, then driving through with my hips always used to bring my arms down on plane, could feel the coil from a wide stance, in knees and spine, like elastic stretched until no more 'give' was to be had, real long drives until my back went pop!
The shoulders have to stay closed during the first part of the down swing while the left hip begins to clear and weight is being transffered forward. Only then can the club find an inside path as the right shoulder drops and the right elbow stays close and in front of the right hip.
Agreed that this video does not help. The more a slicer pulls the club down as shown in this video the more he will slice. The golfer needs good posture, body contol and coil otherwise he will continue to come over the top.
most if not 90% of all over the top moves are caused by not having the club in the slot before the golfer swings down with left arm and forward with the right and preceeds that with pressure tot he lead foot.WHy are we not in the slot?We need to swing upright to stay connected and on the first plane, problems is we go to a second plane at the very top.We need to return to the first plane by moving the left arm back behind torwards the right shoulder, this brings us back to the first plane and
"Coil" is great, but not a cure-all--and golfers have been doing it for generations. I've seen lots of guys get tons of coil and still come way over the top. If you have an instinct to overpower the ball with the muscles of the torso and shoulders, you can get OTT with or without coil. The cure really has more to do with getting a feel for swinging on the right path and plane, with an inside and shallow approach through impact.
Lack of "coil" also doesn't explain (and "coil" doesn't cure) an instinct to swing steep and outside on shorter shots, like the scoring shots around the green.
picking up the golf club is the main reason.Without any coil you're bound to go over the top.Trust me,I struggled with this for 3 years.Without a good instructor, the harder you try to stop coming over the top the worse it will get.
The problem is there are CAUSES why a golfer makes the over the top move - often stemming from a weak left grip or a poor posture - this drill does not address the REAL issues that cause the over the top move, this doesnt really help at all I'm afraid.
