@SlightlySusan OLDER men like to hide their bellies and big butts. Well they think it hides them. What's up with the Guy/Gal in the sweaty blue T-shirt. I enjoy that ballad but I couldn't understand all of his singing. Must have been late on a hot day...you know how pawpaw gets in hot weather.
I think the lead singer gives lie to the idea (held by me) that men of a certain age are unattractive. I like Earnest Hemingway types. Just wish he hadn't worn a Hawaiian shirt. Jeez Louise! Why is that men of certain age wear them? Oh, well, at least he doesn't have a soul patch.
sandy denny and wee musgrave must be laughing at this lame singing. Just because it's 'folk', mate, doesn't mean you should be so thoroughly devoid of vocal talent!
Although the holiday in the song is not specified, internal evidence would suggest it was the local Cabbage Festival. We know this from the second verse:

there is nothing... nothing like dancing to this song at the cropredy festival with a load of other people. Class always and forever! Thanks Fairport.
personally, i think that Richard Thompson should move back here complete a tour and then re-join Fairport, he is a hell of a guitarist and Fairport are still awesome but he made them a great band and he looked happier when he came back to cropredy 2007 then any other gigs that i have seen!
Soooo disappointed! It was waaay better with the woman singing. She was like a psiren...alluring, compelling and soothing. This guy is brutally murdering a fine song.
Any band would change the arrangement after over 30 years. And you can bet the Liege & Leif version isn't a bit like the way the song was played in the 17th century, which is when it was penned. And Peggy never slaps, he uses a pick to get a sharper tone, what you are referring to is snapping, which Geddy Lee of Rush and Less Claypool of Primus often do with their fingers. I personally like it and am a huge fan of Geddy, Les and Peggy (Tull '80-'95).
When Sandy Denny died were they supposed to stop doing this - or any other song she originally sang? After 40 years I think they're quite entitled to change the arangement. Stop being so precious about it!!
Well of course it's different, it's been like, 30 years. Sanders replaces Swarbrick, Simon is singing instead of Sandy, etc, etc... what else can you expect? It's still a great version though.
I don't want to make a big issue out of this, but it's not the change in the line up, so much as the change in presentation .... but hey it's still pretty cool :)
To be fair though, this sounds nothing like the liege & lief version. It sounds like a different band, which it is really. It's good they're doing things their own way I think.
Unless I'm very much mistaken, Peggy's popping out the the high notes on that bass of his. They rock out more as wrinklies, which is odd cos usually it's the other way round.
2003, when Linda Thompson pulled out. I think it's the only time they have played CFF. Well, at least in 'modern' times. Chris never suited long hair, think he was best back in pre/Whippersnapper days.
Just kidding. Looked as if a good time was had by all. Wish I'd have been there.

The original recording sounds like a jam. This also sounds like a jam.

It would be very boring if all live performances were identical. I like some versions more than others, but all of them are worthwhile.

The original is unbeatable, but this version isn't bad, stop whining people.

I've loved all the different ways they've played this down the years, but my favourite was with Maartin Alcock, big guitar intro and all!

dont really like how the drums stop and the bass just rings every new verse. I like the relentlessness of the original.

Its just not the same without Sandy. She sings the song beautifully, rather than as a Nicol comedy.

I love this song - this is one of my favourite "Fairport Convention" songs.
My mum was listening to Fairport Convention songs when she was my age. That was over twenty years ago. She passed that love of their music onto me.

He plays with a pick, so he always has a snappier sound, but occasionally he pops a bit with some more intensity, still with a pick.
