with watchmen especially it is better to read before going to see the movie. i have some friends who went in not knowing a thing about it and came out not liking it (not sure how) nevertheless directors usually stray from the original text anyways to put their own spin on the story and to change things up just a little so you dont always know what exactly is coming. . sometimes its good and a lot of times its BAD :P
I think to fully appreciate Watchmen you need to be reading comics for about five years. Its a matter of being versed is a certain vocabulary. Having a grasp of the tropes is necesary to recognize Watchmen as a metanarrative.
Though the story on the surface works very well, the movie captured that dimension. So given that, reading the graphic novel is really not necessary.
I read the book partially still have to finish it but i think it's better to read the story inorder to see things fall into place where as people that haven't heard of watchmen before will be like wtf.
I say read the book before watching the movie. It is true that it can be disappointing to find things missing, but, in the case of Watchmen, it was extremely satisfying to see how they bring the comic to life. The opening scene with the Comedian had me trembling and literally breathless. I don't think I could've experienced that intense feeling if I had seen the movie first.
I also think that the movie DID do the novel justice. They did change things, but the message is the same. It was amazing.
Reading the story is the way to go. This movie was intended for the fans and not just the general public audience. Hope you enjoyed it.

Watch the movie first with anything because then you can't complain about how much of a disappointment the movie was.
