Ok everyone I tell you why its racist its because all the black audience saw this black character in this film is been treated as a slave. It was at the time that black people hadn't got their civil rights until the late 60s and saw this film as offensive.
It's sad, because, well of 2 things which are lost to time:
1) James Baskett, playing Uncle Remus, was amazing and was the first African American to be recognized with an Academy Award.
2) Joel Chandler Harris, an editor and reconstructionist, whose seven books collected African American folktales Unfortunately, we will lose sight of these 2 men over time, and their names will not be remembered. All for the sake of our doublethink utopia.
This film isn't anymore racist than Aladin, Mulan, or Little Mermaid, and underaged drinking nor the use of the term "Jack ass" hasn't kept Pinocchio from being released on Blu-ray
Thank you for bringing this to us. I have been wanting to see Song of the South again for years. It's one of my favorite Disney movies. What a beautiful story and what beautiful characters. And educational about the pre-civil war South as well.
i've never seen this movie before, but can someone please explain to me why this is "racist"? I'm not saying that it's not racist, i'm genuinely curious as to why this is considered horribly offensive.
@Xxnicoroxxx I'm not looking for a youtube fight. I'm genuinely curious to know why people find this particular clip offensive. If you don't want to answer then no worries
THIS IS NOT A RACIST MOVIE. If you wish to view the entire movie we have the original 1946 Song of the South on DVD, with an interview of Walt Disney himself on the creation of the film. Only at ACME SALES AND BOOKS only in beautiful Savannah, Georgia.
that really sucks that they dont show it in theaters or release it on dvd,i mean they have a freakin RIDE and it's the same story accept they dont have uncle remuis, they replaced him with brer frog! so if they can have a RIDE about it then why cant they release it back in theaters or on dvd!?
This is not racist. If you wish to view the full original 1946 movie with an interview with Walt Disney himself you can find it at ACME sales and books in beautiful Savannah, Ga
this is the the most charming and heart-warming live action disney film that i've ever seen. to call this film racist is political correctness gone mad.
Will there ever be 65th Anniversary edition of this movie on DVD / Blu-Ray / PlayStation Network download? I've only seen one footage from a Disney's Sing-a-long VHS tape, but not the whole classic movie 'itself.' This film is part of Disney's history, and I agree with the fact that it 'should' be out once again after a long period of time. It's an essential piece of Disney's classic collection.
I'm glad I managed to catch the final rerelease of this one to theaters. Awesome classic. I wish it would get a real DVD release. Funny how they put new audio for the trailer.
I finally got to see this masterpiece when i visited Disney World for the second time back in 1993. Anyone who slams this film for being racist is a very closed minded idiot.
Did you see this movie in theaters back in 86? ? 3 times for me. Did you had any stuff like books or readalong books with cassettes. That's awesome yopu saw this in Disney World. damn political correctness killed this movie back in 1986.
@Johnlindsey289 No, i didn't get to see it theatrically until the summer of 93 when they were showing it in a special theater that was adjacent to the hotel we were staying in at Disney World. I also got to see Snow White there as well that summer.
I saw this movie 3 times in theaters when i was 5 years old when i lived in St. Louis and can't believe they never released on video oer these years for politically correct reasons
click 0:18 over and over... laugh like a madman at the magical negro blowing on the cartoon bird... this movie is EXACTLY what its like to live in texas :D

Did everyone hear? Warner Bros. is releasing their infamous "Censored 11" cartoons on DVD next year! That DVD should give us a small hope that this film will see daylight again.
This is exactly why I hate trailers! I'm not saying, all scenes in this trailer are from the actual movie but I still wouldn't call it a proper presentation. "Everything is satisfactual"...yeah right. Sure, this movie has bluebirds and rabbits, but also has some evil boys, a girl bullied by them, one VERY unfortunate boy who was almost killed by a bull
I don't get it. If Disney is racially sensitive, why did they make Pocahontas? I mean if calling someone who's skin color is different from your a savage just because of their skin color isn't racist I don't know what is.
Actualy my dad and evryone I know told me this movie was racist but I just wached the whole movie and the only racist part was the tar baby segment but thay can just edit that to maby a straw person w/ gum on it

@DannanoNiko2 So it wasn't racist that Toby and Remus had 1 set of shabby clothes throughout the film while the white characters had extravagant and beautiful clothes, the fact that at the end as they "walk into the sunset" the white boy is first, followed by the white girl, then the black boy, then the black man, with no black woman? There are countless other examples. Don't just watch, think.
I think the sad thing is is that watching the trailor the movie looks so cute and innocent and harmless. I still don't see why they won't release it on home video in America.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@XxJazzJazzxX Research it or just get a boot legged copy. Once you watch it, you'll see why. It is extremely racist, so much so that even the creators of the film wrote to Walt Disney himself saying that they realized the controversy it could possibly cause between "negro lovers and negro haters".
Song of the south was released officially at one point on ORIGINAL factory made dvd at disneyland/disneyworld only for some reason. The other option is to get it original on laserdisc.
"Song of the South" has NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER been released on VHS, DVD, Laserdisc, Blu-Ray, etc... The only way for one to obtain a copy is to steal the original from the Disney vault, or buy an illegally made bootleg.
It had a limited original release in disneyworld/disneyland on dvd in english. You CAN buy an imported original factory made authentic disney laserdisc. But unless you buy the disneyland dvd it would be a bootleg.
Sorry there was a factory made disneyland/disneyworld dvd they gave out years ago. Very rare and limited dvd. I could care less IF you believe me or not. No skin off my back.
Try ebay, just watch out for the boot(bootlegs). It was released limited time at disneyland years ago. You MIGHT find 1 on ebay sealed up. Try looking for one with a sticker on it and buena vista stamped. This would insure more that you get a real deal. But as far as I know a dvd was released years ago at disneyland. Ebay would be the best option to get one.
ACtually, they have legally released it in some other countries. Only problem is alot of them are dubbed over in another launguage or have subtitle on them. You can legally get those but it takes alot of effort to get your hands on a decent copy.
No... I met a guy who recently bought some from UK last month and brought them back to America to re-sell them. I didn't buy one though cause they were pretty expensive due to all the stuff he had to do to get his hands on them.
Oh. Well, any even if the audio IS sharp, I'll just say from anyone else's point(s)-of-view(s) that it's no big deal.
Anyway, I still think that the Walt Disney Company should wake up, smell the coffee, and realize that lots of us want it to be released onto DVD here in the U.S.A. That way it can cut down on buying it on DVD from overseas. Because, the fact is that it's possible that some or all of them DVD copies of Song of the South from overseas could be illegal bootlegged DVD copies.
Furthermore, the audio in this preview of Disney's "Song of the South" is the original audio Disney fans remember hearing in theatres, and not the sharp audio from the uploaded version of "Song of the South" that is recently shown on YouTube, which I mentioned in my previous comment.
As a true Disney fan, I love watching the Golden Age Disney movies like this one. In fact, I'm thinking about starting a Netflix account so I can rent these Disney classics that I don't own on VHS or DVD.
I watched Disney's "Song of the South" from beginning to end on YouTube a few times lately. I noticed while listening to the music, that the audio was sharp. I don't know if that video footage was uploaded from a DVD or a laserdisc from outside the U.S.A., but I hope there is a copy of "Song of the South" that doesn't sound sharp and sounds just as people remember hearing it in theatres. I've noticed it since I use to watch the Disney Sing-A-Long of "Zip-Eh-Dee-Doo-Da" many times as a kid.
Most trailers have a V.O. explaining what the movie the trailer is representing is about, but this just features the Oscar-winning song, rather than explain it's about a boy who's going through a difficult time and is taught life lessons by Uncle Remus.
have about 10 copies of this dvd available for christmas. Shoot me a message and i will give you all the information on how to obtain one. Works in all dvd players and comes in a dvd case not a paper sleeve. This is a great copy and i use paypal so if you are not satisfied a refund is only 1 click away.

I feel that this is just as exciting to watch as Mary Poppins, Pete's Dragon, and Who Frammed Roger Rabbit.
@1985Nebraska Unfortunately Bob Iger called Song of the South a racist thing of the past and said there will be no plans to release it commercially. Obviously either 1) Bob hasn't bothered to watch the film or 2) he's playing the PC card to avoid any trouble.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this movie and anyone who does not allow their kids to see this is depriving them of a true treat! If anyone hates this then they must hate puppies, Hagen Das, Snuggies, and Bunny Slippers!!
This is a full length animated feature? Looks more like a cheap 10-minute cartoon to me. Wow, don't even bother realeasing this trash to the public...what's the big deal? Everyone looks for any pathetic excuse to complain...I bet those who saw it back in the days don't even remember s*** about this... and the other rest of the world don't care. Stop bitching about this, be happy with what you get.
sounds like you are doing a good job complainin yourself there... Its a movie that children remember and enjoyed from childhood. Im sure you have a few of your tried and true favorites... Its an old movie.
And PS- There are cartoon segments in the movie to help illustrate stories that one of the characters tells his children
I actually own a "decent" DVD copy of this film, I love to watch it with my kids but I love the definition that DVD provides, thats why I want Disney to FREE UNCLE REMUS from the Vault!
Maybe I can post the whole movie online and make a disclaimer that the copyright belongs to Disney Enterprises and the home video rights belong to Walt Disney Home Video.

So, how soon did Disney admit that this re-release would mark the last time they'd let Americans watch the movie?
