I think Romy Schneider and Lilli Palmer liked this work. It is said, that both actresses had a very "special" relationship and that they were not just playing. For Romy Schneider, this film was in addition a good opportunity to play a more serious role than she did play in the films before.

I don`t really know. All I know ist, that they have known each other before. They played togehter in the film "Feuerwerk" - "Fireworks" and I suppose that this "special" relationship had its beginning at this time.

I think there are no foolish questions. There is no need to apologize.I think your questions are quite legitime. But, I`m not sure if I can answer to them. I don`t want to be too philosophical, butI think you find the answers in yourself. You have the need of bravery, of mutual, faithful, not vulgar love..., so it is already in you. And I am sure you will find people with the same needs. It`s a question of exchange and a question of honesty towards yourself and others. I hope you get me. :o)

She didn`t commit suicide in the film. It was just an attempt. In the book she did commit suicide - unfortunately :o(

No, it wasn`t. It`s an invented story by Christa Winsloe. She was an officers' daughter who served in the Prussian army and her mother died very early. That`s why she was in a boarding school and it`s supposed that she put a lot of her own experiences in that story. So it has some autobiographic traits. Winsloe wanted to show the Prussian hardness of the teachers in these boarding schools. I think she let the story take place in Potsdam because Potsdam was the residence town from Prussia.

In the book (1930) - which I`ve read a thousand times - the love between Manuela and Fräulein von Behrenburg is very apparently, not one-sided and Manuela succeeded in doing the suicide. Btw. Winsloe emigrated because she was hunt by the Nazis. In 1944 she and her girlfriend were murdered in a French forest.

Leider empfinden es einige Leute heute immer noch als "skandalös" einen Menschen vom gleichen Geschlecht zu lieben. In nicht wenigen Ländern müssen diese Liebenden sogar um ihr Leben fürchten.
