well this is weird, I've been playing for a couple of years now and I've been fairly concious about developing a good picking technique, yet somehow I never noticed that I've been doing something this basic...
This lesson is good. It definitely helped with my alternate picking on one or two strings, but I've been struggling to find help with a picking technique that helps with moving across the string downward (from E to e) and upward. When I use this technique, it actually causes the pick to catch when I'm moving from the high strings to the lower (e to E). What do I do ? Help!
im finding it hard to do fast triplets for songs such as, raining blood by slayer, or stuff by bullet for my valentine. something feels awkward about the angle that makes me screw up on the fast paced triplets
@RagnaLoki I can't even tilt forward, cause I got used to holding the pick a bit differently. Anyways, when you play standing and you tilt it backwards in might look a bit akward, but then again, it more or less depends on the anatomy of you thumb, I figured. Either way, whatever works for you, gotta try it out.
I anchor my ring and pinky on the face of the guitar. ive been playing for 5 years like that and my problem is i cant change strings very clean and fast. is this bad technique?
@pcnation11 If it's hindering your progress then yes. Some people have a ton of bad habits but manage to work through them over time. I sometimes anchor, sometimes not. If I were you I'd look to free up the right hand more by not anchoring.
You sir are amazing. I have been looking for a better picking technique and everything else I've tried has been uncomfortable compared to my normal style which is a bad way to pick anyway as I hit a lot of bum notes (Sure I'm relatively new to a guitar anyway, but I heard picking technique contributes to mis-hitting as well). This is easy to adapt to, comfortable, and it allows me to pick much easier than before (and faster ;D) :)
I find the the best angle is basically to match the angle of the forearm of the picking hand. Pick tilting also helps reduce wrist strain and it adds kind of a scratchy sound which i think is really cool.
hey dude, thanks a lot. now probably i'll have an easier time with my tremolo picking. BTW, i watched your tremolo picking vid also, so thanks. nice guitar, how much did you bought it? XD thanks again.
@LightMusicBand I got it for a very good price but now I play my strat way more. Who knows though. I may have to kick the big sound again soon. ;) Thanks!
@myke7777 oh, a strat, cool. i already have a strat, but i prefer the one you use in this video. it looks so cool. and thanks again for the tip. gosh, how could something so simple can't be that obvious to me.
does tilting the pick backwards have the same effect? because I see all the fastest guitarist, they pick with the pick forwards like this guy. Does it make certain things easier or just personal preference?
This is the most helpful tip on guitar I've ever seen. I'm sick of losing my pick in the sound hole on my acoustic every half hour. I'm also learning knights of cyndonia by muse of guitar and you need to tremalo pick for a bit of it, I was getting mad i coudn't do it cause the pick got caught. Saw this and now I can play it descent after like 3 minutes. Thanks!
FAWCK, Im tremolo picking a lot, and now my thumb is all sore, cuz it hits the strings.. Is it anything I can to so the thumb dont hit the strings? I can play like To End the Rapture by Avenged Sevenfold, at that speed.. But my thumb is so sore so I cant play that now :(
hahaha i didn't even need to learn this cuz i learn it by myself in accident.lol I don't have a guitar teacher and so when i started playing guitar i was learning by myself. =D
I noticed that too =) But when you tilt the pick the other way so it does not 'roll' of the string you can really accentuate the note without making a big effort, which is great for a pinched harmonic or whatever =) . (more material on the string etc.)
Man, your videos are pretty good, that's the reason why I'm subscribed to you, but do you think that it all comes naturally, I mean I play for about a year, I'm not a great guitar player but most of the pick stuff have come to me naturally. I don't even needed to try something else it's just was easier and the transition from wrong to right when all by itself.
the only thing that comes naturally is your level of inspiration. What you do with it will determine your skill level. I've seen 'naturally' talented people stall on the guitar while those who may be slow starters become amazing because they simply put in the time. :) My advice. Just Play! :) All the time.
isn't this tremolo pick? whats the differerence between tremolo picking and tilt picking?

can i tilt it backwards?
RagnaLoki 1 year ago
@RagnaLoki Yeah but then you'd look like Marty Friedman. hehe.. anyhow I'd tilt forward just so when you stand and play it's not awkward.

lame. no control over your picking hand. wrong angle. just my opinion.

@uutooyu there is no wrong way to play the guitar if the results are good.

@SlimfullSim2 Probably because you hear the sound of the strings as well, coming from the lavelier microphone. The technique seems pretty fine to me!
