I figured most folks who are really into jug band music know that there are no rules, you can do whatever the hell you want, just like the early masters of the craft did.
Fritz used the glove and tape because he was fretting a piano wire on his washtup bass. Not necessary if you pull the stick and use a softer elastic type of clothesline.
Even then, it can cause blisters so tape may still be useful.
There is no WRONG way to play washtub bass. I have used the method in the video for 40 plus years, using 3/16" Nylon & Polypropylene rope, no tape, no glove, and no fretting...and I am at least as good as Fritz Richmond. It's all in your ear and your ability to keep the beat and innovate.
The best way to do a box bass is to actually pull back on the stick using your body weight, and do not try to "fret" the string. If you build a wood box the same size as the swash tub, you get excellent resonance. It has to be solid plywood top 1/4 inch..
FatSlappin's, and SlimPickens, I'm digging your stuff. From Cush, you guys gotta good rhythym, a good blues. Thank you Picken's and Slappin's. Keep up the good work. And make more. Cush is waiting!
Correct title is "Jug Band Quartette", but almost everybody calls it "Jug Band Music"--The Jim Kweskin Jug Band had mistitled it on an early LP that most people got the song from.
It was the last song the original Memphis Jug Band ever recorded (November of 1934 for OKeh/Vocalion).
Hay... if you wanna' play that washtub bass right... you gotta' use a glove on your "stick" hand with some tape and heavy cushoning wrapped around two fingers each. Use that to grip and stop the string like you were fretting. Just look up Fritz Richmond of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and see for yourself.
Delightful. For a bar or two of Mozart, stop by my site, and listen to "Momma Don't Allow".
