Caruso was th greatest of the greatest, no doubt. today, though hs style seems to be to old and there are some who don't understand the genious of Caruso because of that.
next after Caruso are Gigli,Bjorling,Corelli, del Monaco as for true Opera Italian tenor go. I could mention also Mario Lanza-but did not sing in real opera house but only once.
as for Mercury:) he was a great singer but how can you compare incomparable
It is said that Enrico Caruso sang in Tulsa Oklahoma a year or so before his death. He caught a cold while there and blamed his illness on the stay in Tulsa. The concert hall where he performed in Tulsa is said to be haunted by his spirit. Employees have over the years---claimed to sometimes hear his voice when the hall is vacant, faintly singing......up high in the rafters of the space.
I don't know the details of Caruso's visit to BA. Gatti-Casaza is beside and behind him in part of the clip, and it looks like Ruffo and Chaliapin were there for the same season? Caruso and Ruffo didn't get on that well, so I doubt they sang in the same performance. But Argentina had lots of money in those years after WW I.
If you like Caruso you should know who was the great tenor who interpret his role in the film The Great Caruso i.e. Mario Lanza. Mario Lanza is the only tenor whose voice can be compared to Caruso. Freddie Mercury is a complete different genre.

Something is strange here, because Caruso was not that bald in 1908. And he was not married to Doro. And he was not that heavy.
