Licking Heights Middle Schools 8th Grade Men's Chorus did well in their concert last week just the most amazing Westminster is good and they are our leader for how to apply themselves to their expressions.
I go to Westminster Choir College ironically, and even though this is a different tradition than what we focus on at my school, I can still totally appreciate it! so tight and just an awesome arrangement! also those are some KILLER overtones! choirs for the win!
For everyone that has differing opinions on this performance... I like to think that Barbershop choruses/quartets are the 'extreme' level of choral music. Much like Drum Corps/Marching Band is the 'extreme' level of band music. All of the groups are performing at a high level. But it's quite honestly apples and oranges here compared to your normal choral ensemble. But that's just my 2 cents
This is what's called a "Swan Song" in the barbershop community, and each year, the chorus winner from last years convention comes back and performs for the audience while the scores are being tallied for that years competition. Because they are not competing, they don't have to conform to the competition rules, and therefore, the songs are less "barbershop-y".
As for the presentation of the song, I think it is one of the best arrangements of the song I have ever heard, even though it may not
Great arrangement! The major seventh chord at 2:03 is obviously not traditional barbershop, nor the polyphony, but it sounds awesome, and I like how the chorus changed their tone quality and added extra head voice at the time.
this is the best version of the song, i've ever heard. i also sing this in the choir in germany and every version is so different than ours. but it's very good.
The Westminster Chorus is not a "choral group" we are a Barbershop Chorus and the "showboating" that you see is part of the "presentation" which is judged. This does include the presentation performance of all members, including the director.
@WestminsterChorus That's a legit explanation. Thanks for clarifying. Like I said in my initial comment...you guys have an incredible sound. You're world-renown...you're clearly doing something right.
There's no doubt that they're amazing, but the fashion in which they present themselves is a bit distasteful. There's a fine line between showmanship and showboating. In choral music, there's no real need for the conductor to ever turn around and perform for the audience. However, as I mentioned before, they are amazing. Their sound is second to none.
@KendallHolsten It's not a stupid comment because you disagree with it. We simply have 2 different opinions. Mature people respect that in one another. I perform with a choir that performs spirituals...conducted by a professor who studied african & african american music throughout college. Spirituals aren't meant to be performed like this. Agree or not, it is what it is...
@moe4psu23 ok, I respect that you perform with that choir, but this is a barbershop choir, this is what they do. watch ANY other barbershop choir and you'll see the same type of expression. They are champions for a reason.
@moe4psu23 you seem to be pretty closed minded towards different types of choral groups. what specifically is distasteful about it? who are you to say that Spirituals aren't meant to be performed like this? If the piece touches the audience and the message is conveyed (probably more effectively the way this performance was interpreted than the way you might see more fit), then its hard to find any support in your arguments. You are not right to say it is what it is.
@TenorJOE Not close-minded when it comes to music at all. I perform and enjoy everything from gospel and showtunes, to jazz and classical music. My comment wasn't meant to offend. My mistake was misrepresenting my thoughts about this performance. It's a good performance & a good sound. MY PERSONAL OPINION is that I'd prefer to see spirituals performed in their traditional settings. I'm not wrong because you disagree with me.
They won in 2007, right? So this 2008 performance would have been their "Handing on the Number One Chorus" performance and would not be required to conform to all barbershop competition rules--it's a demo performance, IOW. And yeah, I thought the 2009 Chorus of the World version had a lot more energy.
Give me a break! It is cultural. I have heard just as many black folk that can't even approach being "soulful" singing because they didn't go to church and didn't listen to the same music. Likewise, those of any culture who listen to the soulful music and go to the churches that have this flavor of music can sing with the flavor and soulfulness as anyone else.
my brother (the blond in my profile picture) just made it about a month ago into this chorus singing bass. I'm super proud of him!!! now i get to see every one of their performances!!!!
In all my searching, I have never seen or heard anything like what this chorus produces time and time again. These young men should be an inspiration to every man, woman or child who sings.
Love Love Love this!
