Seems Phil in more recent years has back WAY off on the vocal stylings he used here. A little over the top, a la Joe C and such. At times it was REALLY hard to understand him. And the reverb was used heavily in the mid 80s.
Phil did a wonderful job with this tune. I didn't particularly like the echo effect through the mic. As a Christian trumpet player, it's encouraging to see others in your field.
He may not be a Ray Charles in singing, but, have you ever paid attention to Louis Armstrong, with his gruff voice? It was accepted graciously and mimicked many a time. As for his trumpet skills, the horn speaks for him.
If you like him you'll llove his son. . . such talent. . .Jamie Driscoll's songs that are my favorite: Don't be Bitter, Lift up my eyes, and born to win. . .too bad he is on here. . .
He had some kind of issues with income tax evasion. He says someone else was doing his books, and failed to report a lot of his income. He decided to take responsibility since it was his organization. He just wanted to do the jail time and get it over with.
While Phil is tremendously talented and I do enjoy some of his music, if it weren't for the background instrumentals I'd have no clue what he was playing there for a while...sorry. There are just some songs you don't get reckless and carried away with on the flash and freelance and this is one of them. Not saying it has to be played straight, but this song just loses so much if you get really carried away with it.
You can say that about a lot of songs....like Louis Armstrong and When the Saints go Marching In...or like My Favorite Things when MANY jazz musicians play it. The whole point about playing it that way is to show who you are. Playing it straight doesn't add your own style to it. That's the beauty of playing on a theme. So honestly I don;t see what your point is.
As a trumpeter, myself, I understand and respect your views. And, while I would never be so presumptuous as to speak for Phil, perhaps he's making a statement about the glory of the "Biblical" trumpet, here. Sounds that most mortals can't believe will be heard when the roll is called. And, Phil seems to be reaching for something otherworldly with his interpretation, here. Any trumpeter could play this tune. But only he can drape it with his own gifts of power, interpretation and love.
no, mom was wrong. but seriously he is just a one of a kind, not afraid to be himself kind of guy. sorta got that Ray Charles thing goin' on I guess. watch a few more youtubes and you wouldn't have that question.
Mouthpieces are a very personal thing, you'd really be better off getting one that fit your embouchure and lip size than just getting his. That said, I have no idea.
The Ray Charles of the Trumpet...bless the Lord that He gave Phil this wonderful talent and that he uses it for the Lord. I love playing my trumpet for my church and this really inspires me to continuing my playing and just giving the thanks to God
My husband and I saw Phil at the Monavie Leadership Conference in Atlanta on April 5 and 6,2008. He brought us both to tears. What a gift from God. Thank you Phil
Phil was using a custom Giardinelli screw-rim mouthpiece at the time (PD1). He sent me one during this period of his career and I still have it. It's very shallow and has an extreme cushion rim.
He made a guest appearance at my church back in 05'in Memphis,Tn ......... and I guess you can say I played with him to some extent ......... Of course he was the main attraction so to speak . I will see if I can get some footage uploaded
I believe it is a Benge not a Schilke. He used to play Benge trumpets during this time in his career. He also used Giardenelli mouthpieces although I am not sure what he is using here.
This is beautiful. I used to play the trumpet, and I have great admiration for someone with this level of talent. In my wildest dreams, I could never play as well as this man does. Forget the comparisons to Ray Charles. There's only one Ray Charles. And there's only one Phil Driscoll. Fantastic.
I think you mean Joe Cockeresque!!!! He played back up for Joe Cocker years back and that is probably where he picked up his singing style....the trumpet playing? Well, that is definitely all Phil Driscoll...
RESPEKT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phil is a good player, however, he uses way way way to much reverb, I guess that's the sound he wants but I find it very annoying.

Until you hear his big fat trumpet and mellow flugel horn in a huge auditorium, you really cannot appreciate the majesty he brings. Truly.

It's likely a Benge - don't know the model offhand. The second instrument is a flugelhorn - likely a Getzen Eterna 4-valve.

it looks to me like a schilke one of the S models. in other videos he uses many tipes of trumpet. I did see him use a Monette trumpet.
