Try either The Smashing Pumpkins (diverse sound, deeply introspective and haunting lyrics, female bassist) or Radiohead (Different from the Pixies sound, but objectively good music. And importantly, the lead singer is a huge Pixies fan.) I agree with you that so much sounds like crap compared to the Pixies. its problematic

When i first saw this band on Sanborn's old late night show I was hooked- I went out and bought everything they released including Trompe Le Monde and first heard this song while driving to Ocean City NJ on a cassette deck in a rented Ford Taurus station wagon.
