  • I'm falling love with Miss Connolly from afar. I'm watching these songs one by one and though I prefer a baritone on this set, she just sparkles here. A wonderful rendering of these lieder. The orch. was pretty damned good, too, from what I hear.

  • Wow, I love it. So few people really portray the song like that.

  • so, so good

  • Hiya antmusique

Funny, You call it the Last Night [of] silliness. As a descendent of those who during WWII saw Britain as a hopeful light in murky dark times, I can only say I like your silliness.

  • I'm not British, if that's what you're implying with the "your silliness" bit ;)

  • Sorry, I assumed you were British, because you watch the Proms and posted the best parts of the music on youtube in the blink of an eye. Thank you for that.

But now I am very curious: In what other country can one receive BBC? Ireland perhaps? In contrast to me you seem to be a native speaker..

Well, even if you dont want to tell, I still admire your choice of music.

But the rest of the Last Proms Night is funny, not silly. :-))

  • Well, to further add to the confusion, I don't receive BBC in the country where I live and I'm not a native English speaker. I do happen to follow the Proms when they feature opera singers I like, such as the brilliant Sarah Connolly, which is why I posted these :)

  • Hiya antmusique, you mysterious non-BBC receiving, not native English speaking person.:-))

Confused and curious as I am I still embrace you for your postings. Sarah Connolly just sang more then perfect Mahlers Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. She touched my heart.

And Sarah Connolly also amazingly humorous sang 'Rule Britannia' in her Nelson outfit, the silly and or funny sing-along end of the Proms.

  • @ antmusique

Watching the BBC Proms this season I enjoined the 'Planets' by Holst, but the rendition of Mahlers fourth symphony didnt impress me at all, actually I was a bit disappointed, but then again being Dutch I am spoiled when we talk Mahler: Amsterdam, Concertgebouw, the great conductor Bernhard Haitink.

That is why I was surprised to hear Connolly sing these 'Lieder' so well.

  • @ antmusique

Thank you so much for you-tubing this.

I watched the BBC 'Last night of the Proms'. I live on the continent but luckily over here in Holland we receive BBC. Sarah Connolly was amazing. I love Mahler, and her singing "Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen" was so beautiful, just perfect. Thank you.

  • Thank you so much for all four of the songs - the beauty , poignance, clarity and concentration of this performance is unforgettable. The contrast (in the same evening) with the tongue-in-cheek haughtiness and swaggering masculinity of "Nelson", not to mention with baroque and jazz styles of singing is amazing!

    What an incredible talent.

  • it was a very poignant performance...i am deeply moved. her concentration remarkable. and it's very interesting to see the contrast, how masculine and haughty she presented later as nelson!

do you have also the gershwin clip?

  • I agree that the contrast is quite fascinating. It was not the sort of thing I expected to hear amidst all the usual Last Night silliness.

The Gershwin clip will be up in a few hours, btw!

  • oh it's true. i was almost afraid that

Dido and Mahler could overstrain some of the Last-Night-audience (sorry!) but i think they seemed to have enjoyed it very much.

i'm looking forward to your next uploading!

  • hey Brese622, The last night crowd at the proms are often season ticket holders, serious music lovers. This is their party night.
