How can you go wrong with a cast like this ?! Sly Stallone, Robert DeNiro , Harvey Keitel , Ray Liotta , T-1000 , and like a dozen or so actors from The Sopranos !
I will never understand why after two guys refuse to obey to the police car signaling them to stop their vehicle and after one of these guys provokes the chasing police officers by raising against them a suspiciously looking as a firearm piece of steel, these guys are supposed to be..... "victims of police brutality"?!
The liberal fagots in Hollywood must have a really weird understanding about law and order.
@MrTyzhen I don't think it's Hollywood being liberal. This kind of shooting has happened before and the cop(s) get blamed and accused of being racist. It's like what one of the characters in the movie said, "The cops are the perps and the criminals are the victims". I think Keitel's character said that. Of course there have been unjust shootings in the past but sometimes the cops don't have a real choice. All I know is that I'd never pretend to aim a weapon at cops. That's just stupid.
Stallone is actually a very good actor. I wish he would do more movies were he can showcase his acting ability more like in this great film 'Copland', instead of all the macho action stuff that he is more known for.
Everyone gave Stallone props for his acting, being surprised he could deliver...and he IS god.But this movie belongs to Ray Liotta. He has great lines here"It applies,Freddy! Its just as simple as tailing a man by walking infront of him!You dont drive down broadway to get to broadway...youre gonna butt heads with these friends of ours...youre gonna come at them head on??" Beyond brilliant performance.Critics concur...great,hehe.
@Sumumabitch78 But this is my favourite Stallone film, although Ray IS awesome in it. Great ensemble acting from the whole cast and notably Robert Patrick as well as Keitel
@violethigher Well,he certainly proved everybody wrong and did a great job...some got a little confused and missed the difference between surprising everybody and delivering the best performance in the film.Seems alot of critics actually agrees with me when I say Liotta is best in show here.It was sort of a redemption for him too,for the years between Goodfellas and this one. Sure, except for Peter Bergs character,Liottas Figgs was the only one who wasn´t clear cut good or pure evil, that helped.
Definitely worth seeing, this rates as one of those sneaky-good, overlooked films, passed over by a crush of movies which were marketed more aggressively at the time.
one of my all time favorite thriller/cop dramas..jeez, just seeing the trailer gives me chills. i like the directors cut so much more than the theatrical cut..it's funny how the order of scenes gets changed up a little in the two cuts..plus the deleted scenes are included in the directors cut
I remember first time I watched this I was plesantly surprised at Stallones performance. Its not that I dislike him but it was nice to see him step out of his stereotyped roles. Not bad film at all.
I respect this film so much. It's the only Stallone role that's heir to the Rocky of old. He's so perfect for the part. The whole role involves one long struggle with conscience and courage, and when he finally's had enough, even then it's not some outrageous emotional explosion but a kind of dogged, cussed, wounded battle with his own head. Brilliant. Like kadennis66 below says, it's one of the genre's most underrated films. Everyone's on fire, but Stallone beats all.
This movie proved that Stallone is one helluva actor when he wants to be. This movie is so underated and unknown. Damn shame. Great acting by a great cast. Went and saw this when it came out, what did it go against at the box office?
Amazing how with such an awesome cast, it was Stallone who gave the best performance. He was awesome in this. Pity he "gave up" again after this movie didn't do that well.
I honestly feel this was Stallone´s best acting performance ever. If only he would have done more such emotional roles besides what he did in Rocky and Rambo.
At the time director James Mangold was just getting started & had only one little known film to his credit. Trust me, every actor was on his own here. If Scorsese directed the movie it would have been a better film & certainly more high profile. Mangold's participation was seen as a certain lack of confidence in the film, or at the very least that this would be a minor production. So for all those that think Sly was miscast, it really was the director. However......
....Cop Land cost just 10M to make and grossed 45M in theaters alone. Mangold has made only one other film that has shown more than a paltry profit and that's Walk the Line which was made eight years after Cop Land.
@Gnillob802 You have a problem with mangold by anychance....oh just read comment two...you do dont you!! just curious cause a dont care a monkeys..was looking for the film and found it...magic...but just would like to know like why the mangold issue?
@buckstoneboy I liked the movie. Someone was stating that Stallone was miscast and if he weren't in the film somehow it would have been a Scorsese classic. My point is that this was a low budget tryout for a new director who apparently was being sponsored by Scorsese (I'm assuming Mangold was a former student of Scorsese at NYU). With that said, this wasn't a director-driven film by any means, and from his history, Mangold never developed into another Coppola or Spielberg.
I wouldn't go so far to say Sly's performance was Oscar worthy, but it DEFINITELY was one of his best performances.
I remember him being on a talk show back then and he said how he was getting tired of being a musclehead and wanted to be a little more humble. Why hasn't he tried more roles like this? He has potential.
film is so unrealistic... hot women absolutely do not go out or marry cops.... film is BS
