The only reason the British know fries will be thin is because US resturants McDonalds and KFC have never done thick chips/fries, even in Britain and none of the restaurants in Britain before KFC and Maccy D's came along ever served thin (cheap) chips. However some "micro chips" you can buy are indeed thin.
