For me, this style of dancing is the epitome of Lindy Hop. It's mostly socially led, which is to say highly improvised; it's musical; it's joyful; it's playful. There's a nice interplay between the partners. The dancing is superb.
Every time I see a highly polished routine, even one with amazing aerials and flawless execution, something about it leaves me cold. To me, a Lindy dance should always be something of an experiment. If it's too polished, the dancers aren't being playful enough.
Jerry Almonte's blog entry 'Behind The Dance: Frida & Skye at ALHC 2005' tells the back-story of the performance: yes, it is mostly an improvised social dance.
Fun to dance, difficult to watch! It would look better if Skye had a more balance posture instead of placing his upperbody forward and looking at the floor...
If this is has is done, then swing is not a technical dance that would be nice to watch it. But I don't believe in your story, some swing dancers are technical and watching them is a pleasure. Type "Yuval Hod" for example. There is a world of difference in technique between Skye and Yuval. But there're more horrible professional dancers than Skye too. Often, swing people are close-knit groups who worship Manning and don't believe in the evolution of the dance, with exceptions.
@Bradd10003 I watched Yuval for a bit and he certainly enjoys his aerials. Technical, yes. Is it technique? No, it is not. Watch this video and you'll see 80% of it is still lead and follow. It's two people dancing WITH each other.
No one worships Manning. We all just acknowledge and realize what he did the last 25 years of his life to show the world the joy of dancing social Lindy Hop and jazz dance. Yuval is not innovating anything with ill-placed look-what-I can-do acrobatics.
@Bradd10003 lindyhop looks better loose, IMO. Yuval is too stiff. Sure for ballroom Yuval is great, but lindyhop looks better the way Skye and Frida do it. Now could they do ballroom as well as Yuval? Probably not. But that is because its a completely different dance with a different set of rules.
This would look so much better if they actually had some sartorial style, not modern clothes. And no, modern reproductions of 40s clothing with glitter and sequins doesnt cut it.
I can see it over and over again. How incredible they interpret the music, and which rich repertoire they have. It's my absolute favourite lindy video.
that's because she is such an amazing follow, that even though she knows the choreography, she still lets Skye lead her, and doesn't anticipate the move.
It's my favorite lindy video. Whenever I introduce a friend to lindy, this is the link I send. This routine really has that wonderful social dancing feel, right down to the t-shirts and sweat. It's what social dancing in lindy hop is all about.
@spromtet You know, from what i've heard, this is social dancing; i think Skye told Frida half an houre before the competition that he had signed them up or something. And although this is such a great "routine" i think that they are improvising on the spot!
The way they work the music is so amazing, and the way they go from quick movement to freezing is really dramatic. Also, you can tell they're connected the whole time, and they're connected so well even you can actually see it!!

it says in the description that it's 'showcase' which is normally choreographed, but they definitely have a relaxed style.
