Expectations are two high for this review. Yes the look says Land Rover but reality is that Explorer is a minivan replacement. Ford is good at abandoning segments they don't profit well in (minivan, compact pickup etc) In this case its the mid-size SUV segment but there is far too much brand equity in the Explorer name plant to throw that baby out with the bath water. So they just slapped the badge on a good looking CUV.

Anything faster than 10 seconds to 60 mph is just fine. I would not call it slow. But I do agree that additional complexity of the turbo is not worth measly 1.5 MPG and extra $1K.

@Kingsoupturbo I just saw their Kia Optima review (2011) it did the quarter in 15-16 secs. So this LARGE SUV is slow because it pulls the same quarter mile? Bullisht and there is no excuse for them trashing the explorer like that.

What a fucking shit quality review, you guys should be ashamed to have even posted this garbage. People everywhere rave about this vehicle, and for some reason this douchebag rags to all hell on it. Something doesn't seem right here...
Ummm ok your testing the 4cylinder EcoBoost with FWD in it. This review is just plain B.S. I have driven this vehicle its nice and and out and handles well. Both my neighbors just bought one and they love it they have the V-6 and they would have gotten the 4cyl if it had AWD.
this SUV looks sporty becuz it is! also y is the my ford touch a mess in this but not any other ford??????? and for the room yeah I tought the middle row would have a little bit more room but it has tons of room compared to its competition ex kia sorento 7 seats and trunk is now the 3rd row
Well if the government wouldnt have an epa impose a 55 mpg average of all vehicles by 2016 or whatever it is, then we would never probably be getting vehicles like this. Ford got this car right actually. The explorer turned into the mom mobile during the 2000's so ford changed from a truck based car to a more gas friendly vehicle. I work at a ford dealership, and 5 out of every 10 cars sold, are explorers. Everyone loves them. but all in all way to go balls deep in hatred because its not honda.
It's one thing if they didn't like it for whatever reason but the guy comes off as a flat-out douche. "That's an improvement, sure, but not an earth-shattering one. But hey! At least it's $1000 more expensive". And they complain that it's bad because it's based off the Taurus but the Honda Odyssey and Pilot are both based off the Accord's platform and the Pilot is the most vanilla driving and ugly-looking crossover on the market.
If you are looking to take the Explorer off-road (removing the Sport and Utility), you better not buy or test drive the Eco-boost since it comes in FWD only. I also love that during the narrator saying "During our real world testing" it shows the Explorer buzzing down a hilly dirt/gravel road. I don't live in the hills of Montana, so can I get some city or highway 'real world testing'?
No one should be purchasing this vehicle, or any other in its class for off-roading; these are for pax hauling and light towing, nothing more. The interior is as good or even better than JGC, MDX, and Arcadia (definitely a better value than this). People expect too much from SUVs as if they are Jeep Wrangler class, yet aren't even close. You can get a used 1990s C4 for less than 10k if you really want to go off-roading...the 2.0ecoboost does suck in the explorer & would be better in the ranger.
I think the styling is ugly. It looks good on the edge but it's just way too "sporty" for a big suv. It looks even worse in person actually. As far as the engine, when I saw the title I was thinking more like the 3.5 v6 ecoboost, not a 2.0. The 2.0 again would be way better in the edge than this. Ford failed, hard.
@bigdi77 Got that right! I love the end of the review, take the S and U out of SUV and all you're left with is a 'vehicle'. Kudos for Ford at least for increasing their CAFE numbers with small boosted engines. I'm used to large V8's, forget a V6, ha. Today, I'd pickup a V6 as they're easily in the 300+hp range. If Ford could get the same power of the 2.0L as the 3.5L V6, I think Ford would do better, and get gearheads to talk better about what they might recommend to their mother.
Guess Motor Trend didn't receive any money from Ford to put any positive words. Amazing how time in and time out they fluff the same companies no matter how bad the product. The magazines, and others get thousands of dollars and some millions to say all these high quality returns to help the resale value...this practice has gone on for many years...known fact, just like recalls as majority of imports are not required to report them...routine oil change takes an hour or longer...hint hint recall
So they were disappointed with the engine...not much improvement in fuel economy or performance...and I don't think it makes financial sense to choose the EcoBoost, but to flatly say that it's a "bad vehicle" isn't a real intelligent response. According to Edmunds, the 2012 Durango returned similarly-mediocre performance and economy at a similar pricepoint.
well i dont like fords but i think they were a little hard on it. But on the other hand my moms mitsubishi has less horsepower and is about 100-300lbs lighter and its 0-60 time is 6.7 sec with a 230 hp motor!! I would recommend this car to anyone screw the ford
Motortrend you can take your V8 Durango and stick it up your ass. This is going to be successful and I hope you eat those words. I drive a Honda element that does 0-60 in ~12 secs, but it's never left me hanging.
wtf that car has plenty of space especially at the trunk. This review is so bias. You left out all of its cool technology and just don't take the my ford touch ford touch take the normal one.
Dodge Durango V6 with 290 hp does 0-60 in 8.8 seconds (accd to Motor Trend) and that is somehow not slow, but yet this Explorer with LESS horsepower does it in 9.2 seconds and automatically that is considered "too slow". The Durango V6 also does a 1/4 mile in 16.6 seconds and this Explorer is only .3 seconds slower. Really Motor Trend? Really? I hope people catch on to your BS and stop subscribing to your magazine.
My family rented the naturally aspirated v6 in June in Wyoming. I thought it was great. It hauled all 5 of us and our gear. It had plenty of power to handle mountains and it had better handling than my Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is a 4500 lbs truck. It is not a sports car. It returned decent mileage but you have to remember, it is heavy and not the most aerodynamic vehicle. I thought the interior was excellent also. The idea of an SUV based on a car does bother me a little bit.
What a bad review. Good job complaining to the point of just being ridiculous. I agree on a couple points, but the Explorer is definitely roomy, the V6 performs really well in general (why are you grading a vehicle on performance while not testing the most powerful variant anyway?), and while MyFord Touch clearly has some big issues, Ford is actively working to improve it. It's not a perfect vehicle - nothing is. That said, this review comes off as heavily biased, as if you were paid off.
@ljhymes "It's not a perfect vehicle - nothing is" i would have to disagree, the ACVW was the perfect vehicle. simple, economic, inexpensive... what more could someone want
I love Ford but I love honesty even more. Great review motortrend! Stick it to em! Ford will listen and improve. Thanks for rating cars for the consumers benefit!
While a good idea on paper for CAFE standards, you people need to do your research. Just like any other low displacement turbo engine geared for economy, it only does well during highway cruising. Drive it around town like most people do, and that turbo has to boost it's ass off to keep the car moving, and thus consuming a lot more fuel than you think. For reference, look at real world numbers of the Focus vs Cruze. The Chevy's turbo 1.4 is rated better but gets less MPG in real world driving.
never thought id be drag racing a 4 cylander suv that gets 28-30mpg.. the point of the engine is because of the good mpg.. not the damn hp. 250 is still pretty effing good for a 2.0 4 cylander.. obv. motor trend doesnt know what the eff its doing.. never thought they;d be this biased towards american vehicles... someone plays japs favs.
I honestly like the different approach for the Explorer, people need to stop going on a routine in a way and do something different. Apparently the people who don't like things being in different point are the people who don't think outside the box. Or at least give respect
even though the ecoboost isn't as manly as the V6 version, i still think this was a false and bad review...mpg and 0-60 was definitely a lot better last I heard.. combined mpg about 24, and 0-60 about 8 seconds
I'm all for Motortrend taking a brutally honest approach to this car. I've road tested this car and I agree entirely with what they say. Its interior isn't as big as the old one felt. The engine is not worth the extra grand you pay for the 1 or 2 MPGs, and because it's based on a car you're not getting nearly as much off-road capability. This is the problem with being a critic, everyone loves you until you tell them something they like isn't as god-like as you think, then all hell breaks loose.
@ADD8oi Overly harsh? They look the best selling SUV and tried to make it sound like a joke? I just saw their Kia Optima review (2011) it did the quarter in 15-16 secs. So this LARGE SUV is slow because it pulls the same quarter mile? Bullisht and there is no excuse for them trashing the explorer like that.
Um ya fuck you Motortrend I'll never subscribe again lol...let's take one of the hottest vehicles being sold in America by a company that is trying something new to save mpg and bash it without anything good to day...need I remind yall also about the cars acceleration times of the 2002 explorer all the magazines loved? Try having some perspective please.
wow sounds like someone is hating on ford. glad no one is goin to go off motor trends reviews. u guys didnt even compare it to the previous explore its a big improvement to the last one. no one drives these vehicles like u do motortrend. who the fuck wants to accelerate from 0-60 the fastest? only a handful of people who thing "their cool" would do that shit. srry ur to fucking stupid to know how to use n navigate the my ford touch. i have 1 ford n 3 chevys so dnt call me a ford fag u chevy fans
The 2012 Explorer has an EPA estimated highway fuel economy rating of 28 mpg when equipped with the new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine. Explorer on the highway now beats Honda Pilot and Jeep Grand Cherokee by 5 mpg, Chevrolet Traverse by 4 mpg and Toyota Highlander by 3 mpg.
Buy a Dodge Durango V-8 Idiot, it gets an EPA 13 city, and that's driving it for best fuel economy, step on it and it'll flush your gas tank like a Hummer.
u guys need to go back and learn how to do reviews again.. i wanna kno the plus AND minus of the car but not just shut down a car.. a car is a car.. lemme see u do better motor trend.. design a car, build it, put it to mass production and lemme see you put better numbers than the explorer.. although im a toyota/lexus guy.. i think this car is really good for what it is..
@motortrend Also how can a brand new vehicle show you real mpg's? ITS NOT BROKEN IN YET. My guess you complain because your salaries wont afford you an SUV like this. My family Drives an 11 King Ranch F350 Diesle,04 Lincoln Navigator, 05 Mustang GT, 07 Ford Fusion, My 00 Lincoln LS, my 79 F150 and an 01 F250 Lariat. I love my fords and can tell you with all those vehicles including the $55000+ cars; that Explorer would fit right in. Signed a smarter than you 17 year old!
@motortrend I'm not sure who you have testing your vehicles but apparently they don't have a clue on what they are talking about. The Explorer was just ranked #1 SUV in America! The SUV drives great, handles really well and has gorgeous interior. Yes Myford has some kinks to work out but I would like to see one of your people take their fingers off the keyboard writing these BS scripts and build an SUV better than this!
@imthebestofholland Buy a Dodge Durango V-8 Idiot, it gets an EPA 13 city, and that's driving it for best fuel economy, step on it and it'll flush your gas tank like a Hummer.
Come on, that thing is a planet! We keep making vehicles bigger and bigger, demanding more safety and more features and more comfort, but yet we want better gas mileage? Get real. Here's the result people: A FWD 'SUV' that weighs 4500 pounds and packs a 2 liter engine under the hood and still gets crappy gas mileage.
I must say, it sounds like you all are happy with it. If you are, then good for you! You're part of the brain-dead masses that accept compromise as long as you feel good inside.
@poserskaterboy The 2012 Explorer has an EPA estimated highway fuel economy rating of 28 mpg when equipped with the new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine. Explorer on the highway now beats Honda Pilot and Jeep Grand Cherokee by 5 mpg, Chevrolet Traverse by 4 mpg and Toyota Highlander by 3 mpg.
Through August, Ford was the best-selling brand of utility vehicles in America, with sales totaling 377,112, up 30 percent.
Expain to us Genius how you would engineer better gas mileage?
This video does have a point. Ford should make a wagon using the ecoboost 2 liter since this car is basically a tall, 2WD wagon with no offroad cred. It's a pointless vehicle.
Listen up MotorTrend...Ford is here to stay with very, very good cars and trucks. Your magazine has always been biased. Keep bashing Ford and they'll keep selling millions of cars. Those customers who buy those cars aren't wrong.
Wow that's unkind. I just subscribed to motortrend and I haven't heard such a negative judgement on a car in a long time. That's how they do it or they just hate this poor Ford?
Why 9.2 0-60 and 16.9 1/4 mile have to be not enough for a school run car?
What's this obsession for straight line speed in a country where you are not allowed to go past 30?
jesus christ, tell us how you REALLY feel about it motortrend :P Most of the shit he complained about besides the interior, are the compromises many companies are making for increasing their average fuel economy number. Performance, lower stance "less utility" (for better aerodynamics)...etc. OBVIOUSLY no one would buy this to take to a drag strip or to climb mt. fucking everest.
its a perfectley fine suv if i wanted a utility suv/truck id get a fucking jeep but if i want something with room rides nice and looks nice id totaly get this
Are you kidding me motor trend? You say this is bad? The previous explorer had a v8 with less power than the new v6, ive been in the new explorer v6, and i have got to say, rides like a limo, and has pretty impressive acceleration for a suv. It has INCREDIBLE interior very roomy and very sturdy. And im questioning how im getting better mpg in my 02 4.0 ranger...
@MicroOrginisum First off... it's an explorer ecoboost... it's not for power... unlike the trucks ecoboost 2nd all new SUV's ride nice, they're new... 3rd 0 - 60 in 9.2 seconds is SHIT the v6 jeep grand cherokee can do better In fact my friend is getting 22 mpg out of his 06 4.7L V8 jeep grand cherokee and it has 350hp... from a tuning chip and cold air intake. I can't speak about the interior becuase I myself have not driven this vehicle
@HiddenBoss The ecoboost 4cyl puts around the high 200s in hp and torque, if im not mistaken the v6 puts out close to 300 hp. And from the website it gets 26 mpg form the v6 engine.
@MicroOrginisum Yet they say in this video 19 mpg... I'm not sure on how heavy this vehicle is but 0-60 in 9.2... Even for a mom driving her kids that's slow as hell I'm also not sure on the price my friend got his jeep used with 60.000 miles and it's at 163.000 with new exaust, waterpump, cold air intake and a tuning chip... 372hp and 320torque"i got the exact number from him" and gets 21 - 24 mpg From what I've seen in this video I will not buy or reccomend this vehicle
its not a fucking race car, christ

Bad vehicle, good review
FoxTail8000 1 month ago

In a review, you have to mention good things and bad things about a car. Not just completely bash it the whole video.
8xxABHIxx8 1 month ago
I think the styling is ugly. It looks good on the edge but it's just way too "sporty" for a big suv. It looks even worse in person actually. As far as the engine, when I saw the title I was thinking more like the 3.5 v6 ecoboost, not a 2.0. The 2.0 again would be way better in the edge than this. Ford failed, hard.

bigdi77 1 month ago

The magazines, and others get thousands of dollars and some millions to say all these high quality returns to help the resale value...this practice has gone on for many years...known fact, just like recalls as majority of imports are not required to report them...routine oil change takes an hour or longer...hint hint recall
wawdallas 1 month ago
So they were disappointed with the engine...not much improvement in fuel economy or performance...and I don't think it makes financial sense to choose the EcoBoost, but to flatly say that it's a "bad vehicle" isn't a real intelligent response. According to Edmunds, the 2012 Durango returned similarly-mediocre performance and economy at a similar pricepoint.

MicroOrginisum 5 months ago 16
@MicroOrginisum First off... it's an explorer ecoboost... it's not for power... unlike the trucks ecoboost 2nd all new SUV's ride nice, they're new... 3rd 0 - 60 in 9.2 seconds is SHIT the v6 jeep grand cherokee can do better In fact my friend is getting 22 mpg out of his 06 4.7L V8 jeep grand cherokee and it has 350hp... from a tuning chip and cold air intake. I can't speak about the interior becuase I myself have not driven this vehicle
HiddenBoss 4 months ago
