I think that is where people get the "southern hospitatlity" from. What I found in the north is not that people are especially rude or mean, they just don't take that extra step to be helpful. They are on the move. They need to be where they need to be. I also think that

Most of the Northerns I've experience are far ruder than most Southerns. I am from Florida too! I like in north central so it's pretty Southern here. At my art school I found it really rude that people didn't expect me to be smart or for me to be an artist or like gays or non-Christans or hang out with people of different race. Most of those people are from Orlando, Tampa, those more big city places. Southern boy tend to be so much finer, just saying.
Yea i live in FL also, born and raised. and even i am not accustomed to how some areas are. Most costal towns Miami, Lauderdale, Tallahassee even Panama City are o.k. But Jacksonville is Floridas Texas. Also most of the interior part of the state, is very racist and rude.
From my experiences, northern people are MUCH nicer and more kind than people in the South. I'm currently living in Texas and about to move to Wisconsin and couldn't be happier.
During my visits to the midwest, people greeted me with smiles and very very warm hospitality. Being from the south, I have to say people are much more rude and tend to think that they're better than the rest of the world. They're also very much against anyone who's NOT from the south. Plus it's too damn hot! :)

I'm from Alabama. Yes, i have a southern accent but it doesn't mean I'm dumb. Here are some facts about Southerners.
1. Black people and White people get along ( yes there are racist people in the south ,but I'm pretty sure there are racist people in the north also)
2. All of us don't grow up on farms
3. Not everybody wears cowboy hats and cowboy boots (actually nearly no one does)
4. There aren't plantation houses everywhere
5. We go to college
