i have citation 2nd behind man o war.count fleet and secretariat tied at 3,and kelso 4th.27 of 29 with 2 questionable losses?citation should have been retired at that point.what they did to him was cruel.still,he excelled although a less than sound horse.
I saw an interview with Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally. He got to watch Citation live at a race; Mr. McAnally glowed when he talked about the him and called Citation the most perfect horse he had ever seen.
Well... watching Citation coming up ramp at .37 and moving the way he is with that bowed neck at the end... he looks absolutely striking to me. In beginning look what the sun does to his coat, it seems to change color, bronze, reddish brown, gorgeous! Secretariat is no. one for me and is deep in my heart, but I must say, the great Citation can stand with him and look as beautiful. I have a desktop photo at work, it's black and white but he looks so lovely and his tail is so full and long.
The scary thing is,Citation had been battling injuries at 5 and 6. He wasn't always a 100%,in the Gold Cup his trainer and his jock Steve Brooks knew he was starting to get back to his old self. Remember, even at way less than a 100%, he did set a world record at a mile(1:33 and change, I believe),with all his injury issues,it still took one helluva horse (Noor) to beat him, usually a nose or a head! It was fitting that Big Cy returned to his true form in his last race. He was a true great one.
Thanks for the COLOR video! Can't get enough of Cy. He and I watched the Derby together and reminisced about how he won it in 1948, 60 years ago. Brings a tear to my eye ...
You are so right, bon, he looks like a show horse when he crests his neck like that. I have a ton of respect for Citation too, I just wish a certain someone would respect our favorite in the same fashion, WITHOUT veiled denigration (though he will deny that till the cows come home).
I DO respect Secretariat. He did some simply incredible things that even Cy didn't do. I just don't consider him an equine god; if you want to call that denigration ...Was MOW a chestnut? Can't tell from the BW photos, but he doesn't seem to be. Bays aren't as striking as a beautiful chestnut, but they have their own lovely, dark color. Cy's arched neck before and after races was supposedly his own idea. LOOKS like Pegasus ...
Glad you enjoyed the video. I'm honoured that you choose my channel as one of your subscriptions. Color footage of Big Cy is very rare indeed; wonderful to see it. He was a striking horse.

Out of all the Triple Crown winners (including Secretariat) Citation is my favorite.

Such a pity I didn't live back in that time. Would have loved to see all of Calumet's champions!!!

Citation and Secretariat were both very beautiful horses. I love the way Citation bows his neck.

Big Cy was my fathers favorite racehorse, and seeing what he was capable of I fully understand why.

Back in those days some jocks actually wore spurs. Today it is rarely seen.
