I wish he would do what K.T. Tunstall does and record his rhythms as he plays them and play them back as he solos. Without his backing tracks, the genius context of his modal playing is diminished and, I hate to say it, his songs tend to sound very much alike.
@richcapo Yes!Many of his songs sound the same. And it's a GOOD THING!!I always know what I'm getting when I listen to Allan.Unlike many other musicians who change to fit the musical climate. At least for me,Allan can do no wrong!
@richcapo i tend to agree with that last statement. IOU is one of my favorite albums, but it all sounded the same to me the first ten times i listened to it.
Allan never ceases to amaze... just when you think you've seen it all he'll just throw stuff at you at make you realize you have several incarnations as a human to catch up.
@Modes9 i would love to hear an AH album without solos, or very sparse solos (like the ones on 'temporary fault', 'checking out' or 'material real' studio versions...)
He uses his own scalar concepts. He discusses them in videos, which are on youtube, and there is a book called just for the curious and some others, look them up, i downloaded them, pretty nice. Also look up Slomnimsky's Thesaurus of melodic phrases. Has all kind of freaky melodies and things to get your fingers moving!! Allan got many ideas from it. So did I!!
@MrGuitardudeism It's the greatest music book ever written...two thumbs up! I'm sure you would also like Vincent Persichetti's 20th Century Harmony and Mick Goodrick's Advancing Guitarist.
Point taken...although the setup above doesn't necessarily compliment Holdsworth's style or music. He sounded much better with the Yamaha DG80's, but this is probably what the music store had on hand.
in the future phones and digital vidcams will have high fidelity microphones with auto-limiting software....

The same? If by that you mean his signature sound, sure but not the best choice of words. I find Allan's catalogue diverse.

@Samsgarden Yes I mean that what he does is consistent.I,m never dissapointed in what he puts forth.

@bardobound The chord voicings and voice-leading are more mind-blowing than the solos.
