@MarcusWannerMusic that two and a half minute mark in their song would be the most epic Symphony/Orchestra-playing we could ever possibly hope to see!
I was 8 years old when I first saw this on ABC in 1998, and I watched it with my mom. It was the very first movie I ever saw that made me cry out of emotion for the characters.
I cannot help but think of my late dad when I see this clip. He was a teacher and he cried when he watched this for the 1st time. After he retired, a former student told him that she was now a teacher. Dad was pleased to hear that and then she added, "Mr. C, you're the reason I became a teacher" Dad said he never had a bigger compliment and was speechless for once in his life! I miss you, Dad!
We live in sad times for hard working teachers at public schools. This reminds how lucky I was to have teachers who inspired me and touched me with their spirit, some of them passed away by now. I wish that we regain the estimation for our teachers they derserve. Mr.Holland's Opus is also the story about cuttung budgets for school programs and nower days the cut down money at the very basic needs for students.
First of all, a piece's complexity does not necessarily represent it's profundity. Yes, his conducting gives him away, but it is somewhat characteristic of a music teacher...not necessarily a music genius. It takes years and years to develop as a conductor and an actor who could develop any conducting skill whatsoever is fine by me. This scene and this movie shouldn't be judged by this piece, it's just a communication of the idea. If you spend your life looking for things to gripe about, you'll
I love this ending. Especially to see the girl grown up and the governor. I want to have big dreams like her. Im kind of lonely right now though. If u want I can text me at 808-371-4277.
@pretzelzetzel but it's still a great scene! don't get me wrong. but if you've ever seen a conductor conduct, you'll notice what i'm talking about. it totally brought me out of the movie.
This was one of my favorite movies ever. I watched it all in my Chorus class...amazing. So very inspiring..and even as being a Beatles fan this made me cry at that one part.
One of my favorite films ever. I can't help having tears in my eyes every time I watch this scene. Inspiring, beautiful, amazing. This is the kind of movies worth watching, in which you enjoy a nice and good story.
I watched this movie when I was studying to be a teacher and I loved it. almost 15 years have passed and I still have the same feelings. Wonderful story. Wonderful acting. Regards from Chile. eD.
I thought to look for this now as the movie is just coming on TBS. Watching it, I thought about the logistical nightmare this would have taken to organize such a performance. There would have been hours of practice to get ready for the performance, which for the Governor would not have been possible. However, now 15 years later, with the internet, this would become very possible, as every could be done online. This might actually make for an interesting concert, with everyone appearing in vid
@IWant2CMyChild This would have been possible in 1995 too. There would be no need to have a full rehearsal until a day or two before the performance as long as you mailed out the parts to everyone a few months in advance. That way everyone has time to practice on their own and you just put it all together a few days beforehand. Orchestras have concerts after only one or two full rehearsals all the time.
@ajbalettie There is no 'correct' hand to hold a baton in. The right hand is typical mainly because most people in the world are right handed. Many left handed people will conduct with their right hand for the sake of people being used to following a conductor's right hand but some will just feel more comfortable holding the baton and leading with their left hand.
Very touching and heart warming movie. Wish the teachers of today's society would care that much about the education of our students and not just care about their paycheck -.-
@ajbalettie i know not everybody is like that. of course there are always exceptions. there are always exceptions with everything and i really love the teachers who can create such an impact on their students such as mr holland. i didnt mean any offense. take care ^^
I always cry at the end especially when they are panning through and they show Cole, and Iris and they are both teary eyed and then they show the coach and he has tears in his eyes. Thats usually when i lose it and just start sobbing. My B/f hates watching this movie with me.
All the music teachers posting about this "great movie' should NOT follow Mr Holland's example. You shouldn't KISS one of your under age students or help them run away to New York (CREEPY!) Also, if you have a deaf child, don't HATE them for not being able to appreciate music.
@Slackjaw69 I know exactly what you mean b/c even if you are innocent of any wrong doing the appearance of impropriety is there. I think anyone who works with kids today has to protect themselves, and not spend time alone with a child who is not their own child. Anytime I take kids home after church activities I always have my wife or a couple of my kids with me for that reason.
@Slackjaw69 In today's time and day, that would be considered creepy and inappropriate, but a kiss is just a greeting as well. Some foreign countries use a kiss on the cheek as a formal greeting as opposed to a handshake. It may appear as a mistake in today's society, but he was just simply letting her know she had friends and family for support.. And he didnt hate cole. -.- He just had troubles connecting and bonding with him at first cause he couldnt hear music. He eventually got over that.
@skyarsalan I'll bet you Martin Luther King was taught by "A" Mr. Holland. I look back in my life and there are a handful of teachers that contributed more to my life than anyone else. I can't believe how great this movie is and what little recognition it gets. I could argue that this is Richard Dreyfus' best work ever!
as the daughter of 4 yes FOUR generations of teachers, public school teachers who gave everything and give everything this makes me tear up every. single. time.
Is it all possible for me to watch this whole ending to this movie without crying even ONE single tear? It never fails. I always, always cry at this whole ending.
First of all who are the two people who disliked this video? This is an amazing final scene to a movie that should have gotten more attention than it did. This movie is a true American Classic. Heartwarming, emotional, and an amazing look at the life of a teacher who clearly impacted the lives of many. Maybe he's not a real man but after watching this, you fall for the performance of Dreyfuss.
The words you just spoke (or written here, actually) couldn't be more true. This definitely was a true classic, as you said. I couldn't agree with you more.
I love this part of the movie, it makes me cry at this part. I am a music major and going for my degree in music education. I don't understand why people want to take music out of our schools. Music is such a very important part of our history and apart of our world. If we didn't have music in our schools then we wouldn't have such great films. We wouldn't have our favorite musicians to listen to like Boys 2 Men, Usher, Carrie Underwood, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks and more.
This movie is extra-important to me because I just started college for a degree in Music Education and we watched the first 25 minutes of this in our first Intro to Music Ed class.
I met Richard in NYC. He came in the the 84th Street Origins store on the UWS one December with his sons(YOUNG!!) in 2000. He was funny!! He was my customer. EVERYONE who was working today was STUCK(and MANY actors come in)!! NOONE could remember his name!! Not that we DIDN"T know HIM!! It was just that a GREAT actor came in!!!! He REALLY is a GREAT man!!! This is his BEST movie!!!
@fluxmuldar 1) Steven Seagal would sneak into his place and steal his papers, in spite of his fat ass, and then force John Williams and Bruce Hornsby to transcribe it.
2) Flux Capacitor + DeLorean = xtra time; more John Williams
3) Mayor's balls deep involved in drug traffic. Lots of money = Steven Seagal + John Williams + Flux Capacitor + Oldass fake car + more John Williams.
Much love to all my teachers. Miss Atris(Mumford High), Mister Johnson(Western High), Mister Wokowski(Durfee JR.) Coy Blankenship(WesternHigh) Mister Marshack(Peck Elementary)Mister Zyrek(Durfee JR.)Mister Wilkins (Mumford High). You all will never be forgotten.
As a music instructor and teacher, I found this extremely touching and so close to home. Yes, sometimes the job is thankless and you're made to feel like a failure. I like the quote, "No man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child".
acting on a hunch (and being generally pleased with my awesomeness) i noticed that the music at 8.09 sounded familiar...then it hit me...sounds like Robin Hood Prince of Thieves Overture at 1.50mins. i then found out that both were written by michael kamen, he does love his little signature notes , wonder if its in anymore of his work? i rule!!!!
I had a few teachers that influenced me as Mr. Holland did to his students. THis is a remarkable and timeless film. The ending moves me every time as well.
I finally saw this movie through, after I'd bought the disc in December 2008. Why aren't there more films like this? It reminds me of a Twlight Zone episode about a teacher who considered himself a failure, and just when he decides to shoot himself, he hears bells for class. He goes into the classroom to find the spirits of many of his former students, who proceed to tell him how he'd changed their lives.
If you have not seen this movie then you should correct that as soon as possible, it's utterly magnificent. Thank you for posting this jserafi, a wonderful piece of music to finish a superb film.
Love the film. Richard Dreyfuss is a superb actor as his performances in this film and "Jaws" demonstrate only too well. Just a great ending to moving film.
My own high school band teacher, Marty Summers, is taking retirement after 34 years at Aldergrove Secondary School for politics similar to what happened in this film. Our school set the courses so students cannot take music courses without course conflicts, leading to fewer students taking band class. Thanks for everything, Mr. Summers.
This movie is the ultimate gift as a father's day gift to the teacher who brought your hopes, dream, and spirit alive!!
My 7th grade math teacher will always be my own mr holland. He brought out so much in me, and realy taught me so much about being courageous and believing in myself.
This movie is profound and my 7th grade math teacher is definately getting this movie from me!
@chenwenhua2269 Every time I hear this music, I close my eyes and fantasize flying all over america and remind myself what made me happy to be alive for.
Trust me, Close your eyes and you can see the music swell with you. Keeps my head up every time.
I wish the final song was longer in teh movie HOWEVER, for those of you who were concerned about its length, its a good 8.5 minutes long on the album :)
I have & will always love this movie, but watched it for the 30th time & noticed a few things that will forever 'irk' me. Why after 30 years of writing 'American Symphony' is it only 2 min long and sound like a crappy rock song arranged to be performed by an orchestra? Where's 'Rowena's Theme' or any of the other tid-bits of his Symphony revealed throughout the movie. Why can't the Gov/Clarinet/Red Head use her political influence to fund & continue the Music Program? Did Rowena Get Famous? WTF
"We are your symphony Mr. Holland" TT-TT

Everyone should have a teacher like Mr. Holland! Someone who cares enough
about the student! Most teachers like Mr. Holland are far & few betweeen.
I truly believe if more of our teachers were like Mr.Holland there wouldn't be drop outs.

1) How did they get a hold of his manuscript, AND transcribe it for an orchestra?
2) When did all those people have the time to rehearse it, and without the direction of the composer of the piece?
3) How likely that something like this would happen in real life?
fluxmuldar 1 year ago
@fluxmuldar 1) Steven Seagal would sneak into his place and steal his papers, in spite of his fat ass, and then force John Williams and Bruce Hornsby to transcribe it.
2) Flux Capacitor + DeLorean = xtra time; more John Williams
3) Mayor's balls deep involved in drug traffic. Lots of money = Steven Seagal + John Williams + Flux Capacitor + Oldass fake car + more John Williams.
Simple.

@Slyfaux as an aspiring music teacher, this gets me as well. Good movie.

As a music instructor and teacher, I found this extremely touching and so close to home. Yes, sometimes the job is thankless and you're made to feel like a failure. I like the quote, "No man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child".

@Slyfaux What a good phrase, teacher!

acting on a hunch (and being generally pleased with my awesomeness) i noticed that the music at 8.09 sounded familiar...then it hit me...sounds like Robin Hood Prince of Thieves Overture at 1.50mins. i then found out that both were written by michael kamen, he does love his little signature notes , wonder if its in anymore of his work? i rule!!!!

At least he didn't have to conduct the music from "JAWS!"
As a teacher myself, I enjoyed the film, and I would have fought to keep the fine arts program in place even though it isn't my specialty.

Summers.

The theme from Mr. Holland's Symphony sounds a little like the theme from the fourth movement of Brahms 1...doesn't it?

This movie is the ultimate gift as a father's day gift to the teacher who brought your hopes, dream, and spirit alive!!
My 7th grade math teacher will always be my own mr holland. He brought out so much in me, and realy taught me so much about being courageous and believing in myself.
This movie is profound and my 7th grade math teacher is definately getting this movie from me!

WTF

@KennytheKerr the piece itself is a good 8-10 minutes. It's on the soundtrack. Im pretty sure you can find it on imeem(dot)com
