don't mix red parrot fish with other small fish with it.they will chase and nip them when they get near those parrots...hope u understand this bcuz i'm keeping red parrots and it made me fed up with it,so i put it in another tank for only 'parrot fish'..:)
(sigh) I bet you use co2 injections to get those plants to look that amazing don't you. My plants won't grow. They've been the same size for two years. Even with the right lights they still won't grow. I can't even grow Java fern. Even the Marimo balls fall apart after a while. I can grow house plants all over the place but Aquarium plants just will not grow for me. I just don't have the budget for a co2 set up. Your tank rocks dude.
@batlady2 huh. java fern is considerd pretty easy to grow... what kind of substrate are you using and do you do water changes/ check your ph and ammonia and such?
@hudg7630 I've got the Java fern tied to a rock because I read your not suppose to submerse its roots. My PH is 6.8. I do gravel vac/water change once a week. My tank is 8 years old. No amonia or nitrates. I've got enough light too. My other plants are potted in taracotta pots in Aquarium plant substrate. I even feed once a month with Florish. My problem is I can keep plants alive but they grow to slow and the algae grows faster than the plants and gets all over them.
@zaracki92 I have good lights. 3 and a half watts per gallon which are suppose to be enough for the plants I had. I don't have the plants any more. Gave them away when I moved. I planted them in pots because I did not start out with a good substrate but only aquarium gravel. In the pots I used aquarium plant substrate. Now I've started my tank over with no plants. I'm going with fancy guppies this time for a while I think. I've always loved those little guys.
@batlady2 if you were not using pressurized co2, 3.5wpg is way too much for your setup. Shouldve used only like 2wpg and you wouldnt have had the algae problem. Well, you could always do a planted tank with guppies :P
@zaracki92 Yes I think you are right. I had to much light and not enough CO2. But I left the light on no more than 9 hours a day. Do you think that was still to much light?
@batlady2 yup...that was way too much...I run my lights for 6 hours on the 60g planted. There's one tank I run the light for 12 hours but its 1.5wpg in there. Most setups would do best with 6~8 hours of light.
@zaracki92 6 hours?! Wow. I read so much about how the plants need at least 10 hours. I am sure that was the problem now. I left the lights on to long each day. If I go with plants again I'll get low light ones and not leave the lights on more that 6 or 8 hours.
@batlady2 well, I wouldnt do that either :P it all depends on your setup. If you use pressurized Co2 and EI dosing, then 4wpg for 8 hours isnt too much. If you dont use co2, and use only regular liquid ferts, 2wpg at around 6~8 Would be best. If you have anything lower than 2wpg and dont dose any ferts, then I'd keep the light on for 8-10 hours. hope that helps.
@zaracki92 I was not using co2 at all but I was dosing with Florish plant fert with every water change. Once a week. My plants would do pretty good but after they would get to a certain height algae would take them over every time. I would cut them back because of this and as soon as they got to that height again the algae. Also the plants made my tank a lot messier too. It really increased my work load trying to keep the tank clean.
@batlady2 if it was flourish comprehensive, then once a week is fine, but if you were talking about flourish excel, its recommended that you dose it at least once every 2 days. I have algae problems once in a while. Thats usually because of the stuff city adds into the tap water or from me feeding the fish too much to condition them for breeding. In a balanced system, it should take care of itself. It might take a while, but, once matured, a planted tank is the easiest to take care of.
@zaracki92 It was Flourish Comprehensive and I dosed about twice a month. I did not add it with every water change. What sort of plants do you think would work for a guppy tank? Its more alkaline water now than before. Its at 7.4 PH and I add a little salt now too for the gups. Aquarium salt directions dose is 1 Table spoon for every 5 gals.
@batlady2 because of the salt, I'd say anubias, java fern and possibly java moss. I don't use salt in any tanks thats why I'm not sure, but, I guess you can use almost any plant. Some plants I really like are ludwigia repens, guppy grass and hygrophila polysperma. Those are fairly easy to grow. I personally don't see a reason to use salt in any tank unless I am treating a disease.

Is this tank still going? If so, is it just one Discus fish you have? If the answer is yes - bad idea. Get him some tank mates or move him out. Good job though.
When I saw the title, I thought it was a bit arrogant (and really, the all caps is a bit much), but after looking I have to say that you have a beautiful tank. I, too, would like to know how many gallons. I'm thinking there's plenty of space to make sure the different fish will get along.
Anyway, awesome job! I hope to reach your skill level some day.
chuck a turtle in there
bam got it made.
