@LittleMissMaddie1998 Mimi didn't die in Rent. Angel stopped her from passing and told her to stay with Roger. Honestly, I think she should have passed though, just my opinion. Still my favorite musical of all time though :')<3
When i first saw Rent i was expecting Mimi to die...not Angel :( after Collins(Jesse) belted out the last "I'll Cover You" i was crying like a baby, Angel was my favorite character :'(
Though Rent and Les Mis are both great choices, there seems to be little to no variety here. There's Wicked, Pippin, Chess, BatB, The Lion King, Legally Blonde, Cabaret, Cats and so many more. Also, death isn't the only thing that can be sad. How about loneliness, hitting rock bottom, broken dreams, and all that fun stuff? I understand that this list wasn't supposed to seriously good, but I found it predictable and pretty disappointing. Oh well....
Tony's Death in West Side Story has sadness and heartbreak in equal amounts to Eponines death. Maria sings "Somewhere" to Tony hetries to sing with her & dies. Maria covering Tony's body and screaming "Don't you touch him!" Her speech to Chino on how to use the gun and how many of them she can kill and still have one bullet for herself. Great scene, great acting, great emotion.
@kaiyaxrawr Oh god, Miss Saigon... No amount of listening can make me prefer that show over Madame Butterfly... Cio-Cio San is SO much more heart-wrenching.
I find children of eden, end of my favorite year, next to normal, songs for a new world and many more soooooo sadddd.really good list though. i totally agree with the phantom of the opera. cried my eyes out when i saw it on broadway. as a matter of fact, i will listen to it right now! :)
fantine's life is so sad! but i think that the way she died in the book made her story even more touching and sad, i don't like the way she died in the musical!
HELLO Next to Normal. And Oh! What a Lovely War? C'mon, some range here please. Angel's funeral is SO MUCH SADDER. It's also much more tragic when Glinda's mourning Elphie after she's "dead", Chistery's "M-Miss Glinda" is the saddest part of the musical. You're also forgetting the ENTIRE Disney arsenal, did you not cry when Beast or Mufasa died?! And Moritz and Wendla's ghosts? You're a bit TOO mainstream is all. I mean, the WHOLE of Sideshow is sadder than Mimi's out of body experience.
I don't care if Mimi didn't die, the first time I saw this musical it was heartbreaking, I'm sorry you know how it ends and can't see the beauty in Your Song.
Eh. Mimi's death isn't hear wrenching at all. Your Song is perhaps the worst song in the musical. And you really need a wider range. I know Les Mis is sad and all, but there are so many other great musicals out there such that 3 of your saddest moments don't come from one musical. What about 'A Little Night Music'? or 'SideShow'? 'Next to Normal'? Chicago (Mr Cellophane?), Dreamgirls (And I am telling you?), Kristina (You have to be there?)
If you don't know these look them up. You'll be amazed
I think Tony's death in West Side Story was tragic :(, we watched the movie in choir and i had to hold in my tears :'( Plus i think Wicked's For Good should have made the top 5, but its not that tragic because Elphaba lives <3<3
I luv ur list but i think that u have to do a part 3 'cause i think u miss a lots o sad moments like the death of Ti Moune on Once on this island, Mufasa's death, there's a fine fine line by Avenue Q...
Where is the final scene from Blood Brothers? I've seen many musicals, and to be honest I cry at nearly every single one, but with Blood Brothers I was crying long after the production had ended because the ending was that sad and sudden.
does anyone know how i can watch the full rent movie online without downloading it, signing up for something, or having to take those quizes? idk if its even possible..
What about "I'm going home" from Rocky? And "Tell me it's not true" from Blood Brothers and "Empty Chairs" Or "Bring Him Home" from Les Mis? Glad about I'll cover you though :D
I do agree, Les Miz has the most tearjerkers (and is, IMO, the best musical ever), especially, imo, Valjean's Death. However, while tearjerking, the ending of Les Miz is quite heartwarming as well. I actually find Phantom, my second favourite musical, to be the saddest (even more than Ragtime and Miss Saigon), as the ending ripped out my heart, snapped it in eighths, and stamped all over what was left of it. When I first saw it, I was left with an empty feeling in my stomach for days. DAYS.
Personally I cry at the song "bare" from "bare: a pop opera," but its nowhere near as popular enough to make this list. Still, it needs to be given its due!
Love the tragic scene in Phantom. I, too, bawl like a baby whenever I see that scene. There's just so much emotion in that scene. The actors always seem to catch that. I think that is why I bawl every time. The emotion is just on such a level. I am surprised at you not putting any West Side Story in there though. I bawl like a baby every time I see Tony die. Plus, the song those two sing together at the end, gosh, it just pulls at my heartstrings so much. :(
I feel like all ten could have come out of Les Mis and still have been pretty accurate haha. That show is SO sad, but definitely my favorite of all time.
I agree about Phantom and Eponine, super sad.... one suggestion, though, if I may: Collins reprising "I'll Cover You" in 'Rent' after Angel dies. Super sad.
She's so in love with Marius, but she wants him to be happy so badly that she delivers his messages to cosette, and she goes to the barricade to die with him. I'm in Les mis right now, I was called back for Eponine but didn't get it. Still, I'm in love with the part.
little fall of rain will FOREVER be the most heartbreaking scene in a musical ever. and I will fight you on that statement folks. 25 years and its STILL breaking hearts.
The end of Phantom always makes me upset. But the play, not the movie. I didn't really like it. When I saw John CUdia as teh phantom I lost it... he make me cry so much :[
Great list. I was hoping for I'll Cover You (Reprise) to take #1, though. The movie version isn't nearly as sad as the broadway recording of the final performance, though
I'm glad that the Phantom's I love You made the top 3 but i personally thought it should be # 1, because no matter how many times i see it and whoever is performing i start crying like a baby. The cast recording alone has me crying to the point where my roommate is used to seeing me walking around with tears in my eyes lol =P
@phantom4evr101 Agreed. Nobody dies in that scene, but the way he says "I love you" makes it seem like someone did. It's so pitiful and hopeless. I've never been able to hear that line without crying either.
@StratagemBlue yup!! same here big time! =*( when I hear that line to me it sounds like the Phantom died inside his heart was just torn apart and he no longer exists. I saw the show for the 1st time Oct. 15 with the touring cast and was doing everything in my power to keep my eyes open w/o getting blurry frm the tears so I wouldn't miss anything lol...my attempts did not work and in the end i had tears pouring down my face haha
see Fantine's death never relay effected me i would have put the barricade there (the end where you see them all laying on the ground) but eponin is in the right place
Dude, if you could have found some clips of Mimi's death from the show, it would make a better point. I love the film, but the musical does it so much better.
I think Kim's death in Miss Saigon should be in the top 3. Not just her death, but Chris's sobbing always brings a tear to my eye. The Phantom's "I love you" Is soooo pitiful, I always tear up then too.
Oh, man. I saw Phantom of the Opera when it came to my city, and I was a wreck of tears when he sang his final "I love you." I was really mad because most of the other audience members kept snickering at the most emotional parts. I wanted to stand up and smack them one by one!!
@boyslikegirlsthunder My friend Bergen and I are so notorious with our friends because I LOVE Gerard Butler far better than Michael Crawford who is her favorite.
@PandaThe2nd, you could try The Color Purple. I've never seen the musical, but the movie with (directed by Steven Spielberg, starting Whoopi Goldberg,) makes me cry so hard I can't control my face! It's a little disconcerting. The book does too.
alright everyone, please help me here, i havent cried in nearly 6 years, no matter what happens or what ive watched i cant cry, can someone give me a movie or show or song or something that will make me cry? people have said rent, and movies like this will definitely make me cry, and i watched them all without even feeling like im close. so please just give me something that will make me cry.
I agree with you on Michael Crawford! The movie didn't do the musical justice, and Gerard Butler most certainly didn't even compare to Michael Crawford. I also literally cry my eyes out while watching that clip.
These are all very good. One of my top ten is Without You from RENT. Mimi is falling apart nd Angel is dying...the whole scene is very very sad. I can never get through that movie without crying.
Angel's Funeral should of been number one :/ That honestly makes me cry. And Colins being that emotional about loosing the love of his life :/ That should of been number one definately.
a little fall of rain is the saddest moment in a musical ever. i'm playing Eponine in my school production of les mis, at the moment, i find myself crying every time i sing it!
but...what about memories from cats!? that gives me tears every time!
@smackfacetrack because if you're watching it for the first time, you don't know that mimi lives. you think she's died, and everything about the moment is emotional. the song, the silence in the room when it ends as they all think they've lost another friend.. that's why.
I want someone to sing I'll Cover You (Reprise) at my funeral. Both songs mean so much to me :')<3

@phantom4evr101 Agreed. Nobody dies in that scene, but the way he says "I love you" makes it seem like someone did. It's so pitiful and hopeless. I've never been able to hear that line without crying either.
StratagemBlue 1 year ago
@StratagemBlue yup!! same here big time! =*( when I hear that line to me it sounds like the Phantom died inside his heart was just torn apart and he no longer exists. I saw the show for the 1st time Oct. 15 with the touring cast and was doing everything in my power to keep my eyes open w/o getting blurry frm the tears so I wouldn't miss anything lol...my attempts did not work and in the end i had tears pouring down my face haha

see Fantine's death never relay effected me i would have put the barricade there (the end where you see them all laying on the ground) but eponin is in the right place

I wish that Moritz's death, Wendela's death and Abuela Claudia's death made the list

Wow...Lea Salonga is amazing.

I have to wonder how Berger's death in "Hair" didn't make the list! Every time I hear the intro to "The Flesh Failures", I start crying!

am i the only person who actually preferred Gerard Butler?
boyslikegirlsthunder 1 year ago
@boyslikegirlsthunder cuz gerard butler is the best phantom. They way he puts soo much emotion into his voice is frikin fansastic.
Brittney123ish 1 year ago
@boyslikegirlsthunder My friend Bergen and I are so notorious with our friends because I LOVE Gerard Butler far better than Michael Crawford who is her favorite.
mamaashlee0513 1 year ago
Yeah. Since that was kristins last show and you can hear her breaking up it should be higher on the list.

@PandaThe2nd, you could try The Color Purple. I've never seen the musical, but the movie with (directed by Steven Spielberg, starting Whoopi Goldberg,) makes me cry so hard I can't control my face! It's a little disconcerting. The book does too.

i totally agree with the number one
i saw ncik j in les mis and i sobbed in this scene

I agree with you on Michael Crawford! The movie didn't do the musical justice, and Gerard Butler most certainly didn't even compare to Michael Crawford. I also literally cry my eyes out while watching that clip.

miriamsu26 1 year ago
@miriamsu26 I agree 100% Maria pointing the gun at everyone trying to count the bullets to keep at least 1 for herself... heart wrenching.
Joey31379 1 year ago
These are all very good. One of my top ten is Without You from RENT. Mimi is falling apart nd Angel is dying...the whole scene is very very sad. I can never get through that movie without crying.
oreoprincess 1 year ago
Another one should be the crusifiction of Jesus from Godspell. That was heart-wrenching for me to watch.
P.S. I don't think I spelled crusifitcion right..

Yes, there was many death-scenes! "The Phantom Of The Opera" is heart-breaking!!!
xmengirlys 1 year ago
@smackfacetrack because if you're watching it for the first time, you don't know that mimi lives. you think she's died, and everything about the moment is emotional. the song, the silence in the room when it ends as they all think they've lost another friend.. that's why.
