@helen375 the song is written so people can believe either possibility because when the song was written he based it on a conversation he had with a man who is a veteran and his son was going into the military and he was scared because he did not know if he would come back. The man called him after he heard the song to tell him that his son had come home alive and well. so in short, yes.
