@592220 She's 67 now ... and, well, not hot. A picture of her in 2009 pops up on Google Images if you do a search ... it's a sad reminder of what time can do to all of us.
@592220 She was also Jon Voight's first wife. They met during SOM's Broadway run when he took over the role of Liesl's biyfriend, incipient Nazi Rolf Gruber, from Brian Davies, who created the role.
She also played Jimmy Stewart's daughter a few years later in the delightful family comedy "Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation."
I never knew it was a musical before the movie. My mom made me watch the movie back in the 80's when I was a youngster. I enjoyed it but wasn't readily going to admit it then. 20 years later I sat down with my own family and watched it together. Both my kids loved it
What Hollywood never had was fabulous Broadway. I grew up (in Orange County) listening to Mary Martin with this lovely talented group of children and Theodore Bikel; and the movie was also precious. Thank you for posting these. These are marvelous.
I saw these kids on Broadway just one week after they taped this show. It was a Saturday matinee and they were so talented and I think much better than their movie counterparts would later be. In fact the film cast children who resembled these original seven. And don't forget, these kids had to show up at the theatre six days a week and perform live on stage so they were true professionals. I was the age of the youngest one then. I wonder where they are now?
I think it is wonderful to see the original cast...sad that most of us don't know them as well as the movie cast....they are all charming, and poised, and look great.
Wow, she also played one of Jimmy Stewart's and Maureen O'Hara's daughters in the 1962 film Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation. If anyone remembers, she was infatuated with none other than "teen-idol" Fabian.
yes i know lauri starred with maureen o'hara as i love maureen o'hara she is 1 of my actresses. i'd much rather have cliff richard than fabian. cliff is who starred with her in summer holiday. A very popular movie in britain.
Why are a bunch of the posters calling the kid who played Friedrick a dork? He just seems like a normal guy to me. He's just standing there and then he introduces himself. Big deal. - If some of you mean that he moves around a bit; he was probably a bit nervous or excited - even the old pros got nervous at times. Give him a break. (If he's still alive that is LOL)
It was such a wonderful treat to see this vintage footage. I knew that the kids from the OBC had appeared on "What's My line?", but up until now had been unsucessful in locating a clip. I had read that Kathy Dunn had a starring role in a movie after the play closed, in which she played the daughter of a U.N. diplomat, but cannot be sure if this is true or not.
Lauri Peters can also be seen in the James Stewart comedy, "Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation," which I think was made in 1962.
You're right...the movie was called '13 Frightened Girls' and I don't think was a huge success. It was her only big-screen appearance, when she was about sixteen, I think.
I'm a 'Sound of Music' information hunter, anyway. :) I really don't know what became of any of them, except that Lauri Peters is a drama teacher now. There's not a whole lot of focus on the original Broadway cast out there.
One of my older relatives who lives in N.Y.C. saw the production, and gave me her program. She told me that Evanna Lien replaced the original child selected to play Gretl, and that this occurred during out-of-town try-outs.
I didn't know that! That's interesting. That's what happened with Andrea McArdle in 'Annie,' too.
I don't know if you've noticed, but I have several videos of a live audio recording of a performance by the OBC of 'The Sound of Music' on my channel. I believe all of these same girls are in it, but I'm not entirely sure about the boys...I wrote more about that in one of the video descriptions.
Lauri Peters was in a few movies, Marilyn Rogers was in the OBCs of 'The Music Man'(1957) and 'Fiddler On the Roof' (1964) and William Snowden was in the TV version of 'Peter Pan.' (1960) Aside from that I've never heard of any of them in anything.
Very interesting clip from about 1960. 17 year old Lauri Peters sitting next to commentator would become actor Jon Voight's first wife in 1962 to 1967. Jon was the replacement for the first actor who played Rolfe in "The Sound of Music" which opened on Broadway November 16, 1959.
This is delightful! Too bad they didn't let them sing.
I don't understand why there isn't more footage of the OBC out there. When I watched the Rodgers and Hammerstein section of 'Broadway: The American Musical' they had footage from 'Oklahoma,' 'Carousel' and 'South Pacific,' but none from this--just still photos. Why?
marvellous to see the original children from the original Broadway cast of THE SOUND OF MUSIC in 1960 seen many photos of them in the past but never any moving footage thanks very much.
That was fun to watch.

how come the film credits her as Kym Karath?

This is the Broadway team, not the ones from the movie.

It's easy to forget that the Sound of Music had an existance prior to the Julie Andrews movie but here's the proof.

If you watch the 1960 TV version of 'Peter Pan' starring Mary Martin (it's SO much fun!) you can spot Friedrich as one of the Lost Boys.
