Heres a creepy theory- Stage 1 (not with pokey but only giygas) is a female egg just fertilized. Stage 2 is the fetus being made (note the difference) Stage 3 is obviously the fetus, and stage 4 is a miscarriage about to happen. His death is a miscarriage.

You weren't sent back to prevent Giygas' birth. Giygas was already born. Like 100 years ago. Before the events of Mother 1/Earthbound 0 (when his name was translated as Giegue). You were sent backward only a little bit to prevent Giygas from taking over the world. Not to abort him, but to twart him.

The fetus idea, though plausible, is outdated and not true.

The true story was that the creator of Earthbound accidentally walked into some adult movie by accident when he was kid and witnessed a murder scene, though at first he thought it was a rape scene.

Giygas is "his memory" of the incident. Basically, Giygas was inspired by his "fuzzy" memory of the murder scene, and is a manifestation of what was imprinted in his mind from that day on.
